1 Attachment(s)
jpg for measured real time for various configurations,

they are,

2007HeFlash, 2007HeMMC, 2007HeMMC with patch, 2006OSFlash, 2006OSMMC, 2006OSMMC w patch. For Mil and Fanoush, the patched columes are colume 3 and colume 6.

All measured in ave of 3 trials under strict same conditions, (I even sit in the same chair to avoid change in distance from router:p ). There is one exception, the patched 2007He has optimized opera browser, see previous posts in this thread,

[QUOTE_____________________________________________ ______
Other than crashing, you also complaint it is running slow, is only the opera browser or ALL progs? For the opera browser, I have installed those tips,

and these too,

which by itself results in 25% speed enhancement. The rest of all 5 columes are ALL measured under strict similar conditions. Mplayer loading 500 songs is the most spectacular winner!

For those who are experiencing slowdown:

I don't have enough down-and-dirty knowledge of Linux to draw any worthy conclusions, but here's an anecdotal observation for a knowledgeable person to check out.

I installed the latest HE2007 today and observed a performance improvement, UNTIL I created a symbolic link so I could view my Root files in File Manager. Upon doing that, the entire system slowed down noticeably, something akin to what I see described by other users. Got rid of the links and the system returned to reasonable performance again.

For what it's worth...

Per your previous question, the commands to show / (root) files in the file manager are as follows. (I forget where this came from):

cd ~/MyDocs
ln -s / Root

Regarding your comment on the practical speedup by moving files from internal to mmc, I didn't measure when I did this once, but didn't really notice the increased speed by running the OS from mmc.

Finally, got 2007 HE running without problem. Instead of entire OS, I just flashed the filesystem, keeping the Fanoush kernel intact. Seems to be working well so far. Recommend others who have had problems to try this also.

Thanks Carl, so the command will have the dir /root show up as a dir and read file from file manager, right? Thanks, sounds like a good idea. Well, if it drags down everything, I think I am goin to take a pass.

Yes. MMC boot does not give much noticable faster in operation. I measured it and posted two times :o, yes, not only once. In theory, it should speed things up, but in practice, no.

I tried to pass that I understand what you were talking about in the last paragraph, "instead of flashing the whole sys, you just flashed the filesystem", in fact, I dont. You mind to drop a few lines to explain it, and write down the commands how to achieve it, do not forget to put down your starting configuration, OS/flash/MMC 1G or 2G etc. This may be useful when we have to do our ritual, time to time, the Nokia upgrade. I like to write down those step-to-step instructions because I like to help others, that is a plain lie and a plain joke:p , in fact, it helps me to follow it myself in case I have to do it again a few month down the road, for e.g. I have install, remove, re-install maemo mapper probably 5 times to get it working, so does the pairing of my Treo.

This is a reasonably well known issue with OS 2007 (bug #1760) - it causes the metalayer-crawler service to loop and consume large amounts of CPU. metalayer-crawler is the service that indexes your media files for use with Media Player - it trawls the MMC card and also the directories under MyDocs - your symbolic link causes it recursively walk the filesystem and become stuck in /dev.

Until the bug is fixed in a future update to metalayer-crawler don't create that sym link.

[QUOTE=bunanson;77134]Umm..................I think we have a problem here.

FWIW, I repeat this on 2006OS MMCplus 1G patched,

real 29.77s
user 0.15s
sys 4.14s

real time clock 31.5 s

slight longer than 2007He MMCplus, but not much.... I know they should be similar, and they are, I just want to document it.

Yes, that's exactly what I did:

cd ~/MyDocs
ln -s / Root

And got exactly the behavior that Milhouse describes. Looks like I hit the bug.

Thanks for confirming that my powers of observation and deduction aren't gone completely, guys. :)

Maybe it would be interesting to measure response time when CPU is busy (like when playing oggs or real media). Access to jffs2 needs CPU for (de)compression so when CPU is busy with something else the difference should be more visible. When CPU is doing nothing performance difference may not be apparent.

Even if you can't measure the gain directly, it helps the system here and there and can help a lot when system is stressed (low memory, high cpu usage). I/O to mmc card is free for CPU, just see the 'sys' line in dd tests. With jffs2 CPU is the bottleneck.

But true that cloning system to MMC just because of possible speed gains is not worth the effort for most people.

Mmmm.. I don't recall now if I did this or not when I flashed '07 (I don't think I did). I'll try a reflash again in the next day or so and see what happens.

Ummm....I haven't been following the OS2007HE much lately. I still have the previous Hackers Edition on internal flash, and OS2006 on MMC (with Fanoush's mods), and I almost always boot to OS2006, so that's where all my apps are installed. Just wondering what the consensus (ha!) is:

Should I upgrade my old HE to the new one?
Should I bother to dual-boot still?
Are there apps that work on OS2006 but not on OS2007HE?

1) Yes, the new 2007He2007 runs much better than the old 2007He2006, fixed the file manager problem, able to run videocenter which opens to podcast, mp4, 3gp. m4v still not supported (yes, yes, I know not all mp4 are created equal, bla bla bla) and video is more 'tame' on the new 2007He, in a sense that the video is 'workable' now, rather than a true dead.

2) I have not booted up 2006 for a long long time. I guess, dual boot of 2006OS and 2007He is for, software development testing OS versions I guess.
You mean dual boot, right? If you ask MMC boot, I would say it is a must. MMC boot allows one to have almost unlimited space for app installations plus other minor 'fringer benefits'.

3) I have not encountered one myself, there is sporadic posts about Kismet. The working ones are listed here, http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...?t=9282&page=4

i have 2007He flash/mmc 2006OS MMC. Again, my interest in MMC boot is the increase in space of app installation. I am trying Gizmo proj now.....I saw MythTV is now 'working' on N800, I wonder whether it can be ported to the 770?

Another question. I installed OS2007HE on internal flash, a fresh install, and I'll install my favorite apps over the next few days. Which catalogs should I use now? I never really understood the catalog business under OS2006 but I know I had a dozen or so listed.

Choose 2006OS for the 2007He is 99.99% worked. If you brave enough, really really want a particular feature under the 2007OS for the N800, and no report about its status, then you probably will have to 'sweat' it out, install the N800 and keep your jaws hanging....., post your resutls, so that only one person has to sweat, the rest of us just sail thru.....:) Anyway, the list above is pretty into the main stream of what everybody installed.

Good luck.

I flashed this morning and have been working all day to get it back to my old setup.

Recursively copying a backup of the 'email' folder in /home/user/Apps prevented me from having to reconfigure my POP gmail account, which was nice.

Gizmo installed and was up and running right away.
I've found some armel compiled .debs of perl which are also working great.

I put this upgrade off because I assumed it would lead to an unstable and mostly unusable system. (The name Hacker Edition seems to imply that) Not True! It's working as good or better than 2006.

don't install (I tried bash, less, and ntp) when downloading the deb files, but bash and ntp do install from the repository. What am I not understanding about installing from debs and repositories?

If anyone can offer some insight on this problem, I'd greatly appreciate it.

I flashed OS2007HE successfully on my 770, and everything seems to work well. I have attempted to install the python 2.5 runtime files, but keep getting the error:

"Application package missing: libffi4 (>=4.1.0-1osso1)

I followed directions, and installed both repositories for python, but it just won't install because of that file.

now I have seen in this thread that python2.5-runtime 0.4-12 is supposed to work with OS2007HE, but when I go to the site, the only version that is currently available is 0.4-10. I've searched everywhere for 0.4-12, and haven't been able to find it!

Does anyone know how I can get this to install? FWIW, I'm mostly wanting this so that uktube will work.

thanks.

OS2007 Hacker edition 4.2007.36 and Skype

New "SU-18_2007HACKER_4.2007.36-2" edition is out.
I flashed it succesfully with Nokia Internet Tablet Software Update Wizard.

I downloaded skype.install from the site and let the AppManager to load and install Skype. All went ok, but the application does not work. Only the SplashScreen appears for a while, then it closes itself.

Is there any way to make Skype work in N770?

I was able to get it to install on OS2006, but I noticed it doesn't like to install with certain repositories you might have in your application manager. It worked for me in 2006 if it was one of the first apps I installed.

but for the life of me, I can't get it to install in os2007HE. tried it right after a fresh OS flash, directly from the site, and also manually copying the files to the mmc card and trying from the device. Still not successfull.

So after 1.5days of trying I figured out how to get 2.5 installed onto my 770. I have successfully downloaded python 2.5. It is not the most current ( .12 ) or the ( .10 that everybody has had problems with. Using the repository for scirocco I was able to get the ( .08 ) version of python2.5. This version of python works with os2006 gregale ( newest flash ) and it also works with os2007 HE ( newest flash ) On os2007 I was able to install mplayer and UKMP. Uktube worked fine, but the actual UKMP player/dark did not. For the record, you can successfully install the older version of python2.5 for the 770 on os2006/7 using the application manager and the scirocco repository.

It is in bora extras. In general you should use Bora repositories first like with real N800. Only if something doesn't work one should go back and try stuff for IT2006 or N770 (mplayer).

Python runtime installs automatically with first python app you install (I have tried maemo-periodic).

Hi I am unable to flash my n770 with the software downloaded from nokia using windows. The error message say your UI is in incompatible mode and I can only see my kingston memory card. Can tell me what is the problem. thanks.I follow the instruction but can never get into the n770 inside.

Well, I added the bora version of http://repository.maemo.org/extras/ free non-free, and the Python2.5-runtime shows up, but again, its version 0.4-10.

I also tried installing dcarter's libffi4_4.1.0-1osso1 file, but doing that produced an error saying it was unable to install and "incompatable application package".

I guess I'll have to try an older scirocco release.

update. that one says its missing a file as well.

Mike, all.. Enable the redpill mode :
in the applications manager
Go to "Tools > Application catalogue", click "New", enter "matrix" into the "Web Address" field, click "Cancel". Choosing the red pill will activate the red pill mode, obviously, and chosing the blue one will deactivate it.

and click on this link to install the missing package :
http://repository.maemo.org/extras/p...sso1_armel.deb

After, You can install python2.5 and other applications.

Marcos.

For further info on this "Easter Egg" feature.. use G :)
Cheers!
