Re: iPod Touch (threads merged)

Maybe Apple will refuse to acknowledge the screen problem for several months, leaving users no other choice but to send their devices in for sometimes lengthy repairs and then miraculously with no forewarning Apple will fix the screen problems via a firmware upgrade.

No hang on, substitute Apple with Nokia in the above paragraph and it's a situation we can all relate to.

Apple will no doubt replace defective iPod Touches "no questions asked" in the nearest Apple store.

Interesting comment in the Washington Post article - "Mobile Safari is the best portable Web browser around"... without meaning to reignite the debate, it's comments like that which, for the average consumer (ie. the overwhelming majority of consumers), make the iPod/iPhone competitors to the N800. Of course the Washington Post reviewer may never even have heard of the N800, but that doesn't matter to his readership who will now take some convincing if they ever come face to face with an N800...

Yea, they're probably comparing it to exploder on winmobile devices. I've not had a chance to play with one yet. The only iPhone/iPod touch I've seen so far was one that an Apple rep owned. He was up looking in to our one laptop per student program we have going. Lets just call mobile home directories and wireless networks not a good idea.... He said this is the first place he's been that you couldn't get an iPhone. I said welcome to the *** end of nowhere.

What about the iPhone/iTouch WiFi power/range ?
The N800 is really wonderfull : it's better than my laptop/desktop !

Hey, that's a good question murphy. Why hasn't anyone brought up the WiFi strength and range comparison between the two devices yet?

Re: iPod Touch (threads merged)

I got an iPhone recently and the range isn't as spectacular as my 770. However, its adequate that I don't notice signal drops, but with the 770, I was picking up a lot more AP with low signals since its reach seems to be far greater.

I thought the Safari browser would be annoying to use, but it turns out, its quite useful. Zooming into a section of the page basically means I can not be distracted by ads since usually most webpages consist of 40% of ad space.

The one thing I don't like, and I hope Nokia figures out a better way to handle it, is the heat the iPhone generates. The phone gets warm, not burn your hands warm but I don't like hope Apple relies on the casing to be a heat sink. I know this is gonna be an issue once handheld chips get faster and are required to do more.

What I DO like is the fact that the iphone isn't bulging out of my pockets when I'm walking and the touchscreen response time is much better than the 770.

Within Nokia's walls, I've definitely hammered home the power and tendencies of device reviewers. Nokia as a corporation has decided recently to hyperfocus on people who are seen as trendsetters and recommenders; that of course includes reviewers, which means we should be taking them more seriously. We'll see.

You know, I wasn't really trying to compare it to anything. The tone of this thread started out with a "the iPod Touch is here, the sky is falling" sort of attitude. I guess I was really trying to point out that Apple is human and not some demi-god whose products are going to be these perfect world beaters or always necessarily well received. I think that the posts and stories in those links also illustrate that if you're going to hype the hell out of a proposed flagship product you'd better watch your keister because all the high profile media outlets are going to put it under a microscope as soon as possible, and if you stumble with your quality control as Apple obviously did, it's going to get blown up and look ten times worse than if someone like Nokia, Motorola, Sandisk or Creative did it. I use Apple products and Mac OS X as my primary OS on a daily basis, but I still realize that they are a corporation just like any other (nonetheless one with a genius marketing machine) and not some warm, fuzzy, benevolent entity.

I'd also dispute that it's more than just a few dozen screens. It's just too big a coincidence that several noteworthy reviewers across the country would all just happen to get units with poor screens.

It's happened before with faulty iBooks and such. They'll quietly fix the problem and then acknowledge it once the improved units start shipping. They kind of do it in a left handed fashion, but they usually are good about eventually admitting their shortcomings. Fortunately it typically doesn't take them several months and I'd wager that quite a few Apple employees didn't get much sleep this weekend and they'd already triaged this issue at the factories before the sun rose Monday morning. Mr. Jobs isn't very tolerant of problems that cast Apple in a negative light.

Just stumbled into this online video where N95, N800 and iPhone web browsers have been compared side by side...
http://www.viddler.com/atmasphere/videos/53/

This thread discusses about iPod Touch, but isn't the browser the same as in iPhone?
