Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

I dig up this thread http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=70082 about kernel-2.6.37, but didn't fully understand is that (="meego-kernel") booted and used with other Maemo5 components. And why kernel-power is (still) based on 2.6.28?

I'm also thinking what are the reasons today to not use (let say) kernel 3.8-rc3 (2013-01-10) on Maemo5/N900?

SGX driver?

* maemo specified kernel interfaces
* missing kernel drivers
* changed interface of kernel <--> userpace drivers
* worse power management in some parts

Or better said "missing"

@freemangordon, @pali: If you think I'm nagging we can stop this, I'm not targeting your ignore-list :)

This is not mandatory. No doubt it is cool to have 3D. And there are little bit ironing left on non-3D hildon-desktop. And [/optimist] couple of years and we will have open source SGX: http://powervr.gnu.org.ve/doku.php [/optimist]

Is there more info about this topic than:
http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...4&postcount=37
Seems there are work to do, but which is show-stopper?

Seems much of them are merged to the mainline: http://elektranox.org/n900/kernel/status.html
What is still show-stopper?

Why is this? Is newer kernel written poorly?

for sgx, is N9 Meego build feasible if appropriate userland (glibc etc) are available?

@AapoRantalainen - my ignore list :eek: ? Why is that :)

If we want to make a progress, not regress, there should be 3D acceleration. IMO.

The point is that without drastically modifying the vanilla, we'll hit newer sysfs interfaces, closed parts in fremantle and whatnot.

I wonder what exactly benefit do you expect from 3.8 on n900?

See, don't get me wrong, I'd love fremantle with 3.8. AFAIK I am the only one so far who has successfully booted fremantle with 3.5(including working SGX driver). But I did it just as a POC as I really don't see the benefit.

BTW you may wan't to join #maemo-alternatives on freenode, Skry and co are doing wonders there :)

This is pretty impressive!

I'm not hacked enough kernel to really measure how much there would be work. But reimplementing closed source parts would be good thing anyway.

*every time feature is backported it is proof that we should have newer kernel
*rumours that ARM is more supported [e.g. http://www.linaro.org/linaro-blog/20...l-upstreaming/]
*Just to keep maemo up-to-date (but maybe kernel is not top priority)

Re: [Announce] kernel-power stable v51 in Extras-Devel

I updated deb packages of kernel-power pre v52 from my git. When autobuilder start working again I will push this final version to extras-devel.
