Re: New members say hello !

Hi everyone. New forum member here. I got my phone during one of the latest Dell promotions. This is my first smartphone. Spent a good two weeks learning the ins and outs.

In preparation for several trips, I wanted to get tethering working. I downloaded Mobile Hotspot, but was unable to get my PCs to link to it. Bought a copy of JoikuSpot and was able to get that working with my wife's Mac Powerbook. Ultimately, wired tethering (via PC Suite) worked best for my linux laptop. Saved me already from having to pay exorbitant WiFi fees at our hotel.

Had quite a time getting Navit working, but ultimately got it going. But because I used the author's scripts instead of App Manager to install it, I'm now unsure whether to let App Manager upgrade it or not.

I'm not really a social net kind of guy (I'm a Facebook holdout), so I'm focusing on core communication features. I like the Skype and Google Voice integration. Waiting for Fring to get video call functionality.

Resisting the temptation to install everything in the repositories... :)

I am curious.. What's the difference between installing via App Manager vs manually vs the Ovi Store. Do files end up in the same places regardless of the install method? If you install via the Ovi Store (haven't done this yet), do future updates come via App Manager? I suspect 'yes' for all of these, but please let me know.

Thanks,
Richard

Richard:

Welcome!

Yes to all of those questions!

I've had an N900 for a long time, but I want to quote a friend who just got one, and her answer to the "is that a phone?" question.

Her answer: "it's everything!"

She was on a cruise ship and the people asking her were duly impressed.

Had my N900 for ~4 days. It blows me away more each day.

Before I bought it I was slightly dubious from reading online discussions, but I think most people don't really get is the power it has!

I've been using linux ever since I first booted Debian Potato on a pentium 200MMX was my main computer. Took all night to download the ISO over a 33.6 modem. :D amazes me how far things have come!

Hello,

I am a new n900 user. Spent a few months reading this forum before I bought n900 and now I am enjoying it every day. If I can only have MfE working without hiccups with my corporate exchange server it would be perfect :D
This is a great community - half of the reason to have n900. Thanks everybody.

Hi all,

have been browsing these forums for a while (3 weeks). decided to register after i got my nice n900.
i have owned my n900 for about 2 weeks now, still getting use to the ability todo what ever i want.... you see i was a iphone user before.
not saying the iphone was crap, it isnt its just that steve is. too many restrictions and the prspects of craper iphone 4 made me jump ship, and boy did i fall into the deep end.

already got a few things on my n900. going good so far.

My name is Lawand and I am a computer science student from Syria, and also an old time Symbian user and a new Maemo user (N900 is my first Maemo device)

I like this forum because of the quick responses from users which makes me feel that the forum is alive not dead.

I have some experience in programming and I plan to develop applications for N900.

Cheers

Hello, I've had my N900 for a month now and day after day I'm realizing that it's not a normal phone, it is almost like owning a PC, that's mainly because of all the possibilities available throughout the maemo community and the device itself.

Hello! Just purchased my n900. I am looking for T-Mobile or other prepaid plan advice. I would like a data option. Of course I don't want a mandated data plan of any kind. Thanks!

@marty

In case you're looking for info, knowing your location might come in handy ;)

Personally I use Vodafone in Spain, no data limit, but limited calls and sms. Perfect for my needs. In the Netherlands I'd probably go with T-Mobile.

Hello everybody! After a good 2 years lurking on here and internettablettalk, a battery fault on my E55 gave me reason enough to buy an N900 off ebay and give it a whirl til Meego comes!
