I've never seen a *promise* from Nokia, just an estimated shipping date *once* and early.

Whining will not make it ship earlier.
OTOH, whining will frustrate Nokia people who in the future will refrain from giving us inside news, will become pissed and will push for beeing less open in the future.

I know this happens, because I was in the same position Nokia is, few years ago. (Trying to be open and transparent to the community of users of my service, and getting pissed off due to whiners)

Not sure what to believe now...

Just a guess: Nokia's own outsourced web shop cannot for some reason to ship those pre-orders before the end of this week or the start of next week so Nokia has denied distributors to deliver N900s to other retailers and web shop before those pre-orders have been shipped.

Or maybe Nokia should learn how to systematically communicate information to its customers instead of relying on the "tolerance" of particular individuals to engage the community.

I find it weird that so many people here see information from Nokia about the product as being a privilege rather than their right as a consumer. You are the one paying for their products and if you want more information you should demand more information, not roll over and say thank you for whatever scraps you're thrown.

Trust me, I want to be an active member of the Maemo community, I want to contribute to all the other threads, I want to report bugs, make suggestions, contribute tips/tricks, recommend applications etc Once I have the device I will most definitely do that, but that's just not possible right now. Once people start getting the N900 in their hands I am sure this hysteria will die down and these forums will have a much better noise to signal ratio.

Isn't it signal to noise ratio? :)

When the Nokia N900 was announced, I figured it was just what i wanted. hence i pre-ordered it from Amazon sometimes around September. ( I Don't live in the US and i had to get a close friend to pre-order on my behalf so i sent money to re-emboss him ) later when Newegg came with a lower price i informed my friend to cancel with amazon and order with newegg instead. later the shipment was pushed back to November. fair enough i can still get my product before xmas. has it stands now. all major retailers are now saying early December, or even January. Sure am not saying Nokia is responsible for this. but for Christ sake I pre-ordered the N900 even before the Droid, and HTC HD2 was announced and those devices are already out. yet i still don't know when i will get my N900. as it stands the most realistic date is January. 5 month after i pre-ordered the device*** am starting to think .. is it really worth it this pre-order business because all it does it just get you hyped up for nothing.. I could has well just use something now and wait for the device to really be out. then i can purchase it. And yeah i stand by my point that the who N900 release/shipment, pre-order business is a fiasco .. from a consumer's point of view. Who is responsible for this fiasco is a moot point. No body should have to pre-order a $500+ device and have to wait for 5 month before it is delivered.

So basically, you and a lot of the people on this thread listened to the retailers dates and totally ignored Nokia. Nokia said Q3, then delay, then shipping on 10th. I just dont see the big deal. Why oh why you listen and believe the retailers (they WANT your order so will very readily make up dates to get your cash) I have no idea.

People need to use their brains a bit in this thread.

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

Maybe its because it was UK Nokia retail dealers/outlets that were stating deivery date of 9/11 then 16/11 then 19/11 and now saying Nokia sen them an email saying its delayed with no news of a release date. Nice move Nokia.

If I shouldn't listen to a Nokia dealer because only Nokia head office know the truth then thats a pretty sad state for Nokia and their main dealers to be in.

Right and the way to restore that balance is for Nokia to release more information. Well actually there is one other way - for people to lose interest in the product and buy something else.

Some are acting like like the annoyance over delays and lack of information is purely a phenomenon of this forum and that it can be controlled here. It's happening everywhere the N900 is being discussed because people literally cannot believe there's no retail date and as they look into it more they find a wide spread of dates stretching into 2010.

So people will either complain about the lack of information or buy something else. What they're not going to do is realign their expectations according to what Nokia has decided to provide which appears to be what several people here are calling for.

To be told it'd be shipped 16th Nov, and be arriving today, then to hear NOTHING on the 16th, is really annoying!

the device is about 10 days late.

FYI: the devices are made somewhere, packaged and shipped. so there is a delay. it is normal. N900s doesn't come from north poles magic factories and teleport straight to your pocket..

i've argued a month now with those "nokia has lied to us!!" -fanatics that take a blog note "it will be released xx.xx." as a promise from nokia.

and now when nokia has officially announced that devices has allready been shipped from the factory and it is less than 2 weeks and most of you will have the device - the announcement calmed people for 5 seconds. soon after that the fanatism continued.

now I'm thinking about stop being a greeter and just tell you to piss off when you ask something here after the devices has been shipped. or then I could stay a greeter, keep improving wiki etc and help you with your devices later. but it means you all need to return a favour to me and stop being stupid.

I'm just pissed off because this torrent of stupidity that gets worse day by day.....

People are expressing their anger on twitter as well, on blogs, in forum comments everywhere. There is nothing unusual about the discourse here it's a reflection of what people are saying about the product.

If, like me, you want Nokia to survive as a competitor to Android and the iPhone you should be asking why Nokia cannot do this one simple thing rather than why people should just shut up about it.

Imagine how many posts simply wouldn't exist if after the summit where they handed out 300 units Nokia issued a press release saying "We don't expect the N900 to be available at retail until November 25th" (or whenever). That's a full 5 or 6 weeks in which people would be talking about how they're looking forward to the product coming out instead of "What's happening? Where is it? What did newegg say today? Who wants to ring MPD?".

Please read carefully the first rows of the nokia press release

Quote:

Espoo, Finland - The shipments of the Nokia N900, Nokia's latest mobile computer based on open source Maemo 5 software, have now started. The Nokia N900 will be available in retail stores in November with an estimated retail price of EUR 500, excluding sales taxes and subsidies.
The title is misleading, but the content is clear: the device ships in november, so until 1st of december they are not late.

Re: OPK: N900 deliveries have now started!!

Hello maemo.org - noob here.

I too have been waiting for the n900 with growing impatience. I do sympathise with the people who are getting frustrated with waiting for this device due to the inconsistency in information from Nokia themselves.

When i visited the flagship store in London a couple of weeks ago I was able to have a quick play with the only n900 they had in store, and loved it immediately. ( The camera is amazing for a start! ) The first member of staff i asked about a release date told me January 2010!

The second member of staff told me 16th of November.

I think its this kind of differentiation in information that seems unprofessional and misleading and inevitably makes people lose faith in what are a huge, well established company. They are certainly well established enough to be able to roll out a product with less drama than has concerned the n900.

It makes one wonder if its all part of the marketing strategy..? Create some mystery, get the forums buzzing, create some kind of must-have fever that ends up being less about the device and more about the hype.

That does nothing for me. I want DATES. Solid DATES, so I can not be checking this and other forums every 5 minutes. That is obviously a choice I have, and if Im stupid enough to be wasting my life in this way ( which I definitely am! ) then I probably deserve the frustration that comes with that. However, a couple of rock-solid press statements here and there, or even a bloody twitter, might quell my impatience somewhat.

Nokia Store Finland has told me for weeks, that the delivery starts at week 48. Today they stated that they will release the pre-orders on 20.-23.11 in their systems and our cards will be charged, so be sure to have enough funds. Here is the link to the statement (in Finnish):

So we will be getting our phones next week! I hope to get it on tuesday (maybe monday if Im lucky), cause I took the express delivery...

I am very eager for the N900, though these thread's provide a great deal of entertainment in awaiting this darn'd phone.

I have been speaking to the Camberley branch of MPD and the word i heard was that this morning MPD branches received email confirmation that the N900 will not be available until the end of November from them.

This does not answer queries about other e/re-tailers but it does allow me to be a little more paitent...about my choosen distributor.

if i place my order today - what are the chances that i will get the unit after all the people who have pre-ordered it say in the next 20 days?

or basically i will be looking at a delivery in 2010 instead?

thank you.

Its very possible - you'd think Nokia have shipped large numbers of phones. Dont listen to these idiots in this thread. The phones shipped on the 10th, and will be available to retailers on general release up to 2 weeks after that date.

n900 shipping delayed would be better thread for now, don't you think?
