Yes, I did it.....installed gcc g++....if I remember correctly, I may have had to update my sources list to get it ....

You can try 'apt-get install gcc g++' and see if it finds it to install. If not, then update sources list to add debian lenny (?) to get it....

BLIZZARD: I don't think that compilers have menu items, since they are command-line apps.

i cant find it either on command line. i will reinstall it and try again

FYI.....I installed this a few weeks ago and just compiled one app from sources, so, just did:

Code:

# ./configure
# make
# make install

I had to reflash the other day, so, I need to re-install gcc g++ again....

The latest power user kernel (kernel-power-flasher) v34 in extras-devel includes a fix for the MMC code.
I wonder whether it could fix the sometimes very long decompression times of the easydebian image.
Please let me know if it helps.

I've installed a Polish keyboard layout for the hardware keyboard so while holding fn and ctrl i can type óćął etc. It works perfectly in openoffice when I open it via the icon in app manager but when I open it from debian it doesn't work. Is it supposed to be this way? How can I fix it?

Have you edited /etc/xdg/lxsession/LXDE/autostart and chosen a Polish keyboard by
Code:

@setxkbmap pl
as explained in the wiki?

I've checked the file and the line was there but I forgot to add @ in front of the line. So I did it but still it doesn't work. I'll try to reeboot. does this make a difference that I've got a modified rx-51 file?

fw190. Have you tried to run synchroot from rootshell after mounting easy debian and edited the file? I had to do that to get my "dano" keyboard working in lxde.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

fw190: Perhaps you can also try "sudo synchroot" (once you have opened your chroot) to see if copying your custom keyboard file into Debian will help.

EDIT: Got distracted while posting, and I got beaten to the punch by hstende! Nice surprise! :)

fw190: no, you type sudo synchroot in Maemo not in Debian... Sorry I wasn't clear...

Interesting! Under what circumstances can one expect to have to run synchroot manually? When does it actually run automatically? On first chroot?

I had to get some sleep :) after typing it in xterm I get: syching chroot... and nothing hapens. I'll try to reboot.

Hahahahha after rebooting it works. You are great You know? I don't have to install evince or fbreader in maemo. I just have them in debian. It saves rootfs and gives me new oportunities!!! Yes, indeed, Easy Debian is the single most useful app for the N900! It's strictly white magic, though!

From the wiki: If you feel overwhelmed by gratitude towards qole for bringing a full-fledged Debian OS to your device, consider donating at qole.org.

If I'm remembering right, I had something about 700-800 MB of free space after doing localepurge (see the wiki).

That you see when you type "df" in the Debian chroot terminal.

When you install lots of stuff from the command-line, you should do "apt-get clean" regularly to free some space.

Code:

cat /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon/gnumeric.desktop
That should be now
Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=gnumeric
Icon=gnumeric
Exec=debbie gnumeric
Type=Application

That should give a gnumeric app with a blank (blue) icon in the application manager (once you've rebooted, as I already said). If you replace the icon by an existing one, like ooo-calc (the ending .png is omitted) you should also have a special icon, but even without it works for me.

If still no - perhaps you haven't installed gnumeric yet? :p
That is most easily done with the Debian chroot terminal app (red swirl icon), by typing in
Code:

apt-get update
apt-get install gnumeric
apt-get clean

Hello, I'm having a similar problem on my N900. When I create .desktop files in the /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon directory they don't appear in my app list anywhere. That is, they are not in the task launcher or the list of shortcuts to add to the desktop. I've run the cat command and the file contents display correctly.

When I instead put them in /usr/share/applications/hildon then they do appear and can be added to my desktop but they don't do anything, even though "debbie gnumeric" does work in the terminal. :(

Can anyone help? I've described the problem more in this thread:

If putting .desktop files in /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon don't show up even after a reboot, that could mean that you don't have PR1.1 yet. Could that be?

But /usr/share/applications/hildon should work at any rate. Could you post the exact content of your desktop file? I have a gnumeric.desktop file reading
Code:

[Desktop Entry]
Version=1.0
Encoding=UTF-8
Name=gnumeric
Icon=ooo-calc
Exec=debbie gnumeric
Type=Application

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Aha, I've heard that the UK never got PR1.1 for some reason... Maybe that's Davey101's problem for the ~/.local/share/applications/hildon files...

Davey101 2010-05-20 17:46

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Hi, thanks for the reply! Yes I am running PR1.1 but it's the UK Vodafone variant. I've been waiting (and waiting) for PR1.2 to come along before re-flashing with generic. :)

Having gone out and come back to the problem, I've made the following discoveries:

1) Items in /home/user/.local/share/applications/hildon are showing up in the task launcher, at the bottom, but not in the 'Add Shortcut' list -- even after a reboot. I thought they were also missing from the task launcher but I've just become too accustomed to Catorise putting things in alphabetical order.

2) Items in /usr/share/applications/hildon are appearing in both lists and are now working on the desktop!!! :)

I don't know why they are suddenly working. It is possible I was doing something stupid that is now unreproducible...

Something strange happens when I use the xvkbd in Debian's
Accessories. If I touch a letter with the stylus and then lift the stylus up, the letter continues to print as if the key is being held down.

Any idea how to fix this?

I had this question several months ago myself. The answer is here. I'll add that to the wiki.

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

@qole: some pages ago I had some questions about synchroot that I still haven't figured out: What is the role of synchroot? Is it run automatically on each first chroot or only by the installer or only when the image is produced? Do I need to run it manually when something is changed in Maemo like the rx-51?

EDIT: If I understand correctly, synchroot is run only the very first time. So I guess manual re-installs and also modifications on something like the rx-51 should be followed by
Code:

sudo closechroot
touch /home/user/.synchroot

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

Hi,

I just installed "easy debian" 2 days ago, Install went smooth, I decompressed the files on my PC with 7zip (added reference to 7zip in the wiki) and copied over sftp.

Now, LXDE starts fine, but I am having such an annoying problem.
I tried searching "power search" and flipping through this 128 page thread, but didn't find the solution, also looked in the wiki.
The problem is that LXDE starts, and the hardware keyboard doesn't work, I tried :
- Pressing the power button and then outside, doesn't work.
- Starting "fix lxde hw kbd" which work for a few seconds and then, for some unknown reason, the whole LXDE is zoomed out into the Maemo 5 task manager view (where you see all your open apps as if I pressed control + backspace).
I only have LXDE running. I tried rebooting the phone, running the fix again, same thing happens.

Driving me crazy ):
Any ideas?

Besides that I am a fond of TCL/TK scripting language, it installed easily through synaptic and I managed to run a few stuff on it flawless!

AFAIK, you're the first with such a problem. I guess something nonstandard that you've installed is interfering. Perhaps shortcutd or a similar app? In fact, I have shortcutd running without problems, but I also have only very few things configured in shortcutd.

Yep I have shortcutd too, but only the camera button is configured, and I swear I didn't touch it (;

hello..i was trying to install the package build-essential and i got this:

Code:

[root@deb-m5v3d: ~]apt-get install build-essential
Reading package lists... Done

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have
requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable
distribution that some required packages have not yet been created

The following information may help to resolve the situation:

The following packages have unmet dependencies:

                            libc-dev
                  Depends: g++ (>= 4:4.3.1) but it is not going to be installed

i tried to fix it with this without success
Code:

any suggestions?

Re: Easy Debian Fremantle Beta Testing

I encountered some glitches with xvkbd+xbindkeys that I don't fully understand. Perhaps somebody can educate me:

For example an entry
Code:

"xvkbd -xsendevent -text "\[percent]""
 Shift+Mod5 + d

in .xbindkeysrc and activated by "debbie xbindkeys" does not produce the % character when I press Fn+Shift+d. Except for F1-F12, escape, and tab, only the characters that I anyway have on my (rx51-tailored) hw keyboard seem to work. (synchroot didn't help btw.)

However, when I start LXDE, open a terminal there, do
Code:

killall xbindkeys
xbindkeys

it does work (but only there, not outside of LXDE). It also doesn't work with "@xbindkeys -f /home/user/.xbindkeysrc" in the autostart file. :confused:

By the way, I found a way to take advantage of the virtual keyboard from within debbie applications. Backing out to the Maemo XTerminal, I produce a special character with the virtual keyboard there, copy the character, and can then paste it in the debbie application when the latter has a paste menu item. Fortunately, I need that only rarely because of my suitably remapped hw keyboard. But I would definitely prefer a more elegant solution.
