Re: [ANNOUNCE] CSSU-thumb thread - stable Thumb2 on N900

it does not matter how you'll install it. and as it seems somehow your dpkg DB got broken, i;d say - install it with apt-get and move on :)

EDIT:
or maybe it is because Nokia key expired so HAM is refusing to install from an untrusted source

Okay both make sense, even though only one will be correct. :)

Anyway, it's not decided it is able to install and is downloading. Many thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

And it has finished and is installed. Excellent. Again, thank you for your help.

Currently I don't have the time to try old packages, if it is needed I can do some digging on Sunday

Simply navigating an unknown area with Marble in offline mode due to the forced offline from the update. /me silly, posting this as hint for somebody else facing similar problems.

Updated, so far, so good

only issue i've noticed since updating this morning is that some menu items are displayed corrupted. this morning is was camera and email but reboot sorted it out. now it is affecting calendar.

it cause a small portion of top left corner of the icon to display incorrectly. will reboot after typing this to see if it clears again.

edit: rebooted, all ok for now.

One tiny issue so far.

I see the provider name twice - but as it's EE it's not a problem. Not rebooted again since the initial reboot after installation. I'll report back if it's still there after the next reboot.

seems you are hit by a bug(will be fixed in the next update) of operator widget. However this is not related to -thumb, it is a bug that comes from CSSU-testing.

Yes, it looks like I can get it down to custom text plus operator by putting in some custom text.

... is it possible to have the package libqt4-dev_4.7.4~git20110505+cssu9+thumb0_armel.deb compiled for arm?

(in the thumb repo this deb contains qmake for i386)

Does it exist anywhere?

-dev packages are meant for the ScratchBox environment, so no such .deb exists. You have to clone the source repo (https://gitorious.org/community-ssu/qt-x11-maemo) , tweak the build scripts and build it by yourself. I vaguely remember there was a patch somewhere to do that (build qmake for arm), though I couldn't find it.

I am still waiting for your assessment if your "lots of pngs" application works faster with NEON-optimized libpng :)

Re: [ANNOUNCE] CSSU-thumb thread - stable Thumb2 on N900

Dear freemangordon....

You said that the latest png libs available in the thumb repo should be about 20-30% faster.
In my opinion it is not true.

I think that the percentage is really higher!!! :D
In my opinion is should be about 50% ..or more.
I don't know if it is due to other system updates....but damn, it's fast like ever!

Thanks for your notice freemangordon.

I did not update anything intentionally.

Should I have to run the same commands as mentioned by you or in this order?:
dpkg -l
grep microb
dpkg -l
grep libpng
dpkg -l
grep zlib

I am asking this bcos I could not see the symbol "|" in my N900 Kbd.

I tried dpkg -l, it listed. But when I tried grep microb, x-term looks as if it is waiting for some kbd input. Got Confused...!

Thnaks in advance.

@bharathkumarst - dpkg output looks fine. Could be that your browser cache got corrupted because of the crash, though I can't help you with cleaning it.

however, you may want install sysklogd, reboot and upload /var/log/syslog (after browser has crashed) somewhere. PM me the link to that file.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] CSSU-thumb thread - stable Thumb2 on N900

Suggestion: compile libc6 with gcc-4.7-thumb
No proper patch yet, but seems it needs only one modification:
Code:

apt-get source libc6=2.5.1-1eglibc27+0m5
cd glibc-2.5.1/
fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage
->fails

Then patch:
Code:

build-tree/glibc-2.5/elf/Makefile
-                      -e 's/\. = 0 + SIZEOF_HEADERS;/& _begin = . - SIZEOF_HEADERS;/' \
+                      -e 's/\. = .* + SIZEOF_HEADERS;/& _begin = . - SIZEOF_HEADERS;/' \

And continue building
Code:

cd build-tree/armel-libc
make
->success

What is seen from the logs is that "browser", i.e. UI , (not "browserd") segfaults:

Code:

.
.
.
Jan 15 20:55:38 Nokia-N900 browser[1659]: GLIB CRITICAL ** default - browser_engine_is_alive: assertion `self->web' failed
.
.
.
Jan 15 20:55:39 Nokia-N900 maemo-launcher[1015]: child (pid=1659) terminated due to signal=11

browser UI is closed source :( , so I really can't do much to help you. And if everything else in the system works ok, I'd rather say it is not related to -thumb.

I guess your bookmarks (DB), offline cache or some other browser file/DB got corrupted, but unfortunately can't help you with fixing that.

check if your "/usr/share/bookmark-manager/bookmarks/MyBookmarks.xml" is (or at least seems) ok. I don't know where user added bookmarks are stored, sorry, but you should check them too.

As I am convinced your problems are not related to cssu-thumb, you'd better continue on the "application x closed" thread.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] CSSU-thumb thread - stable Thumb2 on N900

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

I reported earlier a strange behaviour of my N900 following a certain update. I acted as if the slider switch operated on its own randomly: BackupMenu restarting spontaneously, display switching on and off randomly, even when the phone was left on the desk with no one touching it for hours... You can imagine the mess this caused with the phone in the pocket :) I was already starting to suspect a hardware problem and resigned to having to kiss my beloved N900 good buy when...

...I found there was an unofficial Thumb update yesterday (only available though apt-get, no HAM notification) and that fixed it! My phone behaves again!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!

It's been stated hundreds of times: DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE BUT HAM for system updates.

HAM* =/= FAM*
HAM: Hildon Application Manager, default installed on your device...
FAM: Faster Application Manager

@mosiomm - Right now most of the repos do not work, I'd recommend you to wait until the whole maemo infra is up again and to retry then.

browser UI is closed source :( , so I really can't do much to help you.

@freemangordon
Finally nothing worked and I made a reflash finally. I suspect the recent CSSU-testing would have some thing wrong. So this time I decided to stay away from it. But thanks to you I really need thumb. In that case, Can I use thumb with CSSU-stable? Thanks in advance.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] CSSU-thumb thread - stable Thumb2 on N900

@bharathkumarst - the short answer - no. The long one - as pointed in the first post, cssu-thumb is based on cssu-testing, i.e. most of the packages in testing (and few more) are compiled with a different toolchain. installing thumb packages on top of cssu-stable could work (in theory), but it is neither tested nor supported. and you will have to do it by hand.

I am really surprised of the problem you had. Though I still think it was not caused by cssu. with hundreds of users on cssu-thumb and maybe thousands on cssu-testing, I'd rather assume it was some unfortunate event on your device, rather than problem in cssu. rigth now as the repos are down, you can't install cssu, so i'd recommend to use the time until they are back again and to consider installing cssu-thumb again. esp now you have a clean system.

Thanks freemangordon. Actually before two flashes, I think I had installed CSSU-stable and thumb on top of it. I did not get any issue; but I dont know whether I i actually installed stable or testing. Anyhow... Thanks for your kind guidance for this. I will wait.

Fremantle's GlibC ( 2.5.1-1eglibc27+0m5 ) compiled with gcc-4.7.

Step1, compile:
Code:

git clone git://gitorious.org/~aaporantalainen/community-ssu/aaporantalainens-glibc.git
cd aaporantalainens-glibc
fakeroot dpkg-buildpackage

-> several deb-files, only libc6_2.5.1-1eglibc28_armel.deb is used (others are not installed as default).

Step2, installing to the (thumb-)device:
Code:

dpkg -i libc6_2.5.1-1eglibc28_armel.deb
Step3, using:
Code:

reboot
Locales are broken. Seems same than in thread: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=52443 but can't be solved with the same method. E.g. 2.0MB /usr/lib/locale/locale-archive (instead of 21MB). After downgrading locales work again.

Step4, downgrade:
Code:

apt-get install libc6=2.5.1-1eglibc27+0m5

Why locales break?

Now, when the repo on maemo.org works...

I've tried to install thumb for the first time on clean, reflashed system - I've managed to do everything but last step: HAM tells me I need to install using PC Suite (I have CSSU among few libqtm-* packages listed in upgrades).

Am I doing something wrong here? I can provide more info if needed.

The answer to the PC Suite problem is here
