There's nothing that should prevent you from hotplugging the sdcard. What I think this means is that Jolla gives the above info just for clueless users who do not know what mount/umount means.
As there is no automatic method to do that before inserting and removing cards it is better to err on the side of caution... :D

Just like on the Jolla phone where you can easily hot-swap sdcards, you just need to manually umount the fs before removing the card.

Every Android version has a simple button in the settings to unmount the SDCard... I don't know why Jolla has not implemented this simple feature... :confused:

Wasted opportunity. Why not learn from the giants of the past? The N900 unmounted the SD card automatically if you removed the back cover. It had a magnetic sensor for that purpose.

Jolla also has a sensor detecting that the back cover (also known as The Other Half) has been removed. Why not using it?

Oh, sorry, I forgot. The Other Half is there for changing ringtones and desktop wallpapers, not for anything actually useful.

Yeah here in Finland I got my tablet 15:00 at work. DHL guy was nice enough to switch delivery address when he called me and I was able to get it today.

Though didn't do much with it yet as had practice after work and helped a friend move a bed after that.

Google Docs had some serious issues this evening and is back up now.

The Spreadsheet is up to date with delivered Tablets mentioned here and on Twitter for the folks i already had data and the ones that provided sufficiant data within theyr hooray posts.

Everyone who would like to contribute with his rough shipping data or update/correct his entry is totally invited to PM me. Email is tabletpre at mosushi dot com.

I think there i still some fun to come in the next weeks and data from delivered tablets is most precious for any sort of estimation :D

My tablet is still in customs here in Finland, although i guess it was on the same flight from Leipzig. Mind checking, miqu?Since there is probably no delivery on Sat i have to wait till Monday....Should have protested with customs that they speed up before weekend :D

Nokia was actually designing hardware, Jolla was just picking features from a list of what the OEM would integrate in a reference design for them.
Putting a thin NFC patch in the back cover, adding i2C out connector, all feasible within this scope.
The ringtone and background related back cover feature is a choice: if you have to feature instantly swappable back covers with ring tones you can't connect "unmount SD" to that action.

Check the Jolla tablet SD sloth: doesn't look like something Nokia would have designed. (they would a least have put a rubber cover that would wear off after a year or two and which Nokia care would happily replace)

I'd advice Jolla tablet owners to cover the SD card slot by a strong patch of tape to prevent accidental removal of the and dust traveling into the device.

If not, every toddler that grabs the tablet to play his Android games will try to remove the SD card without unmounting :)

Good design is sometimes lost in the race for cheap consumer products.

I have already learned with the Asus T100 tablet / mini PC that SD cards need no cover in Taiwan, even worse, the card is partially sticking out calling for accidental release.

I find that strange because to my concept, the Micro SD is more for embedded purposes than for constant insertion and removal. Same goes for the Jolla tablet.
Micor SD needs to be covered and forgotten.

I used to be disappointed to find my 2009 Apple laptop with SD card also had the card sticking out instead of push to insert / remove.

I don't see why not. Take the cover off, unmount the card, put a new one back, mount the card again. I am struggling to come up with a use case when this would cause any problem.

But,
a) we are straying further away from the topic and

Interesting. For me it is the exact opposite: a removable medium is there to be removed. That is the whole point: to easily and constantly swap it in an out, as a means of transferring data from A to B. If you want big permanent storage, you should get big permanent storage, not rely on crutches like SD cards.

Which is why I never understood why some devices, including Nokia N900 and the Jolla phone, make it so difficult. At least the Jolla tablet makes it simpler (except not really).

Definitely!!! I'd like to use them to organize data as well; one SD card for photos, one for coding / development work, one for music, one for games, etc. There's no need to get a crazy expensive high-capacity card when you can get a pile of cheap low-capacity cards and swap them as needed...

The tablet is rather snappy, but only after the update to 1.1.9.28. Pages in the browser load almost instantly, which should be showing :) More later.

It's my hope and conceit that I'll be doing something with my tablet creative and valuable enough that I want to also keep a small library of memory cards. Not sure how I'll physically store my storage yet. My ad hoc method of tossing them in a mini-drawer with a teensy-weensy name written on them has reached the limit of search-and-retrievability. Hopefully, I'll figure that out before my Jolla arrives. Should be no problem . . .;)

They make it difficult to prevent accidental removal and memory corruption, that is why I dislike some computers like the Asus T100 or possibly the Jolla Tablet where the slot is uncovered and the card can be removed easily.

Even the old Nokia 808 offers a very useful USB on the go feature where Jolla can be accessed by FTP or SSH.

The purpose of removable storage is multiple: certainly removability but primarly expandabiliy and upgradablity.

Also not many companies offer user friendly options in fixed memory. And reliability remains to be seen (Samsung 16GB eMMC "sudden death syndrome" )

Apple and Nokia N9 with their 16GB models come to mind crippling memory options.

With an additional micro SD slot user has the freedom to make permanent storage limited in capacity and reliable:

SD card is the standard removable media for daily insert / removal operations whiel Micro SD card is more practical for a situation of upgrade memory and forget.

It has originally been developed with mobile phones in mind.

Contact wear and risk of loss at smaller than stamp size form factor is higher.

One question for those who already got their tablet:

Do you own a Jolla Phone and have tried to export / import via Backup all the accounts for example? Plus media files and or other?

Since i am traditionally lazy :D i definetly want to try that. (my mailserver is not in finland so i have always to tweak ports) plus all the calendars and so on. Would be convenient to import accounts.
