Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I Installed the latest version of Navit today and am trying to get it to work with a map of California I downloaded from http://downloads.cloudmade.com/north...ia#breadcrumbs
The map appears in the map list but when selecting that map it is blank. (just a tan background) I have tried zooming out but I do not ever see anything. Navit seems like a wonderful alternative to the map application and I would love to see it in action. Can anyone give me some pointers on how to get this map to show up? Thanks! |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
did you have a gps signal at the time? until you have a signal it won't know your inside that map. after the first use that gets a signal it will store the last place you were at, so will always restart inside your map.

I haven't gone to the IRC or the wiki or anything yet.. I was just approaching this out of the blue, after seeing this ages ago when it was new, and hoping to see that there was a new release I could install to try out. I'm not keen on using Subversion downloaded copies of software (preferring the more stable tagged releases after bugs are shaken out rather than using the ever-changing trunk code that the bleeding edge feature branches are often merged back into, depending on how you're using Subversion). I usually wait for the tag release to put out a deb. Do you expect that there will be a settled-out 'stable' deb put out at some point that most people can run, or will it always be a checked-out Subversion experiment? |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
Well, now I feel slightly foolish after finding http://download.navit-project.org/navit/n800/svn/ :)
I guess the question is still valid despite the continuous builds out of Subversion: Will there be tagged stable 'releases' in the future? (ie: to feature in maemo extras for most people to see and try) ...or am I also not seeing that somewhere as well? (I lack wireless Internet here so I can't check with my tablet to see if it's in Extras.) Also--thanks a LOT for the ongoing work on this app.. I truly love the whole idea and where it's going, too. |
Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
it's a fair point, I've been picking up latest and some are better than others. But I guess it would be good to cut a more stable level at some point. I'll ask on #navit if they're heading towards a stable level that would make a good candidate.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
I believe you can find the default copy in:
/usr/share/navit I think there is another copy somewhere?? I forget though. Do read through this thread http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...858#post281858 Lots of good info there and links to several more resources. I'd start with the last 6-8 pages perhaps as they have the most recent info. *Whoops wrong thread. |

I have also noticed that when entering a city or street name it is very slow and the cpu spikes way up. Is this being worked on? So far I like what I see. PS: Is there any software for the N810 that can allow it act as a bluetooth GPS for other devices? |

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008
mrlanrat : check out the wiki for full explanation, but searching is not so easy. there is no attribute of a street that identifies it as belonging to a town. it basically guesses by assuming streets in a certain radius belong.
it also doesn't know about towns for searching unless they have a set of is_in tags to provide their relative position in a search heirarchy. as for cpu spikes...i'm afraid it's a pretty intensive app, it's performance (or lack thereof) is the biggest issue for running on tablets. soupdragon: no idea about gps brands, I'd imagine you'd need a dedicated bluetooth gps. not sure most devices would let their gps component be used by anything else. |
