Yes, thank you allnameswereout. :) I'm a bit bemused over how this is a discussion topic. I didn't say that the aim was popularity. Benny, you're reading my words almost like the devil reads the bible (I'm not sure if that saying translates to English very well).

Anyway. Popularity is one practical measure of success, it's not a goal, but it's a byproduct of doing your work well. Yes, you can also have different goals. A niche approach works for some products, although I do argue that it's not a good strategy for a SW platform.

Please please do not take out the hardware keypad. I can understand if it is replaced by another hardware thing like the roller ball or the touch pad.

I do not understand how nokia gets the idea that hardware keypad is very less used by the users..... believe me it is 100% the other way round. That is the only one thing i hate about the n180 in comparision to the n800(of course the lack of the second slot and the fm tuner also are there)

Many Many times i was frustrated by the lack of the keypad on the front of the device. But still i opened the keyboard and use it a lot .... mainly for one handed use.

It is seriously unbelievable to think that the hardware keyboard is not useful. If you cannot make good software for the keypad just leave it alone .... but please do not take it off.

Nokia aren't a low-volume, niche market provider, though. (Most) Maemo developers want as many users as possible, to get more recognition. (Most) Maemo users want more devices to sell to get more developers.

Ironically, I suspect (no data!) that the anti-hardware button bias works against that...

Hard keys also allow you act without looking. Both in that they allow you to find exactly where to push and that they respond in a tactile, not visual, manner.
