mrdally204: Go here http://maemo.org/downloads/product/OS2008/navit/ and click on the "Install" file. It will add the svn repository and install the latest svn version.

The many errors make routing difficult and tedious. I wish I had time to go through and correct them, but I don't. Corrections can take a week or three to show up on cloudemade, which adds to the frustration.

Today i managed to see my osm modifications in navit in the same day following the "Processing yourself a small area" at this link http://wiki.navit-project.org/index.php/OpenStreetMaps .
The server often give you "error 501 internal server error" but i think it's only his fault, because later i've got it with the same commandline.
This page http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/XAPI#Example list other server but it seems that the most updated one is http://xapi.openstreetmap.org, other servers doesn't have my changes yet

Does anyone know how to get a downloaded map to work? I've followed the instructions from http://wiki.navit-project.org/index....n770/n800/n810 and even ones googled from here and I still only get Europe maps.

Laughing Man: what exactly have you tried? where are you based?
when you say you only get Europe maps, do you mean the demo map?
did you get a gps signal?
this thread contains quiet a lot of helpful posts.

That does help. However, my problem really is the time it takes to make changes in OSM. In general in my area (Ohio, USA) most of the highway/road crossings are currently treated as intersections which is incorrect. There are a large number of these in the area :( and would take quite some time to correct. Additionally, in at least two cases that I have found (and I am sure there are more) roads seem to be made up of multiple segments, making navigation impossible. One is a residential street, the other is Highway 80 a major toll-road that cuts across Ohio. On the whole, a monstrous task that I simply don't have time for, it would take going grid by grid, checking each street and intersection, making corrections where needed and moving to the next area.

I haven't been able to get any Garmin maps (I've tried multiple maps) for my area to work either. It appears to load (no errors in xterm), but nothing shows up on the screen when that is the only map enabled.

As such, although I love the idea of Navit, its' use is very limited for me in my area, it might get me by in a pinch, but I couldn't trust the maps outside of an area that I am semi-familiar with.

I am based in the United States. I downloaded the Maryland map from CloudMaps and put it in my /media/mmc1/navit/ directory I created. I editted the navit.xml file to point to that directory and map file but it still only shows the demo map.

I have not tried with a GPS signal but shouldn't the map be blank then instead of a demo map if I pointed it at the Maryland map and not the default one?

@Laughing Man

Did you change your center coordinates. They are just above the map section in navit.xml Likely, they are still set to the default which is centered on the sample map. You can either change the coordinates (recommended) or wait, once you get a gps signal, it should position you on the map correctly.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008

Yes I have gotten GPS signal (today). But now it just shows me in the middle of nowhere on the map.

Edit: I just don't get it. Where in the navit.xml am I suppose to point the maps too? I've replaced the paths to /media/mmc1/navit/maryland.navit.bin

Yet nothing shows up still.

Re: Navit GPS (and libgarmin) for os2008

did you enable your map in navit.xml?
you should find all about navit.xml here:
http://wiki.navit-project.org/index....figuring_Navit
but now that i read well maybe someone (dwould?) should update the wiki, the mapset section in my navit.xml start with
<mapset enabled="yes">
and not just
<mapset >
as reported in the wiki.
could your issue be caused by this?
