Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Company finally upgraded to Exchange 2007, I was excited to have HTML email in my N900 finally... but everything is black & white. I do see image placeholders (but the images themselves don't load), and bold text is emboldened. So at least it's better than with Exchange 2003, but still not the same as other "normal" e-mail accounts.

Is this normal or have I got something configured badly?

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Is there a way to stop the N900 from editing my contacts every time I send an email to them?

This is a serious issue for many reasons:
  • Nokia doesn't support categories, so when you email someone, the categories in their contact card are deleted!
  • Nokia doesn't support more than 256 characters for the address field, so every time you email someone, their address is truncated!

Anyway, it's strange that MfE is replacing contacts rather than sync'ing them. With other Nokia phones, unsupported fields were kept!

PS: The back-end I'm sync'ing with is my company's Exchange 2007.

I can confirm those two bugs too happening also with Exchange 2003. Would you like to raise them in https://bugs.maemo.org ?

I also have some contacts created in the N900 that don't sync back. But I'm not yet able to reproduce it at will. :(

OK it seems to work on HTML email but not rich text, or whatever regular Outlook emails use...

This has been explained in this thread some pages ago.
There is a local drafts and sent items folders on Modest.

For me the annoying is the drafts since I can't continue with writing the mail when I hop to my PC.

Are we seeing any update for syncing Gmail with MfE. I tried my best but it doesn't sync. Any information or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

I was hoping too much from PR1.2 i only ask for Mfe Gmail (Email) Sync bug fixes ...

Didn't work better :(

Hi,

Given that PR1.2 is now out and that this thread is 138 pages (and counting...), any chance someone can give a brief update on using mfe with gmail?

I flashed PR1.2 yesterday, and still have no luck syncing google calendar.

Cheers in advance :)

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

I just updated OTA to 1.2. Prior to this, I was successfully syncing google calendar and contacts using MfE.

After the update, syncing hangs at the end of syncing the calendar and then just gives up. Sigh.

If someone gets calendar & contact syncing working, I'd love to hear about your settings.

Vitaly. I still have these problems with jpg's:

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...postcount=1114

Was this solved in 1.2?

And can you shed some light on issue no 2 in this post:

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...postcount=1114

It seems that it's not solved either..

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Guys, I'm about to throw the N900 out the window...

After finally managing to get MfE up and running with my Scalix Server on PR 1.1.1 working pretty much ok in the last coupla months now everything is messed up again after PR 1.2.

Sync breaks up randomly leaving my calendar on Outlook now with at least 10 duplicates for each entry and some more yearly events duplicated 4 times, just an hour later... Email won't sync at all. Contacts work from time to time.

What the hell did you change on PR 1.2?

I even decided to re-flash the device from scratch still leaving me with nothing but troubles. And yes, pretty much on the edge of a nervous breakdown.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

In PR1.2, we have now Accept/Decline/Tentative for calendar appointments (which is of course a welcome addition).

How about other features still (apparently) missing in PR1.2:
- ability to see appointment's attendees
- ability to set-up an appointment with attendees
- support for private appointments

And probably most importantly (for some), support as a provisionable device.

Are these going to be implemented in N900? Or is the current implementation in PR1.2 as good as it gets?

I managed to get it working after constant post pr1.2 errors.

All I did was turn off each of calander and contacts and synced individually. then a full sync for both. Seems to have sorted it.

MfE and GMail still a problem?

Hi

I can't get MfE and GMail to sync. It works for contacts and calendar, but not mail.

After some searching here it seems that this is an old problem.

I just wonder whether there should be a change in this with the new FW?

I just use SyncEvolution to sync calendar + contacts, and the Mail app for accessing IMAP GMail.

Yes, but it's posted that Google MfE isn't 2003 or 2007. I just wonder why it works with a brand new Windows Phone mobile. Is there an other standard that a Windows Phone supports and not the N900 then?

Yeah, I would guess so. Or maybe N900 is very strict with standards.

It seems that technically, Google uses Google Sync, which is based upon and similar to, but not exactly the same as, ActiveSync. Google paid Microsoft to build upon what's covered in Microsoft's ActiveSync patent. It could be that as part of the deal, Microsoft has access to the specifications of Google Sync for its own products.

At one point, vitaly_repin, a Nokia developer who works on Mail for Exchange, commented here that Google has not made the specifications for Google Sync public, and Nokia would code only to official specifications, not to trial-and-error reverse engineering of a protocol. I can not find that posting. Perhaps in the future, Google will make the Google Sync specifications public or Nokia will license them. Until then, MfE syncing with Google using an N900 is a lucky thing and not officially supported.

Hi Vitaly....hope to see you here soon...it's a long time we don't hear anything from you...but go ahead with adding features to MFE :D

I'm just now happy because I can start using MFE with my Exchange 2003 server :):):) !
The famous bug with the recurring events seems to be fixed and I can now sync also my calendar.anf fully use N900 as my primary phone.
In the next days I'll post some impression as I'll start to use it.

I think that the main features needed are:
- local and remote search of email of Echange
- colors and category support: It would be nice to have the same type of appointment in outlook (example: work, personal etc)
- a better Modest email client (it is really absurd that it is impossible to mark all messages as read and you have to do it one by one)
- a better Calendar & PIM app
- many other aspects not MFE related, like bluetooh with car, portrait mode with all the standard apps, T9 on screen vertical keyboard for sms, etc etc

I hope to see soon them in Maemo or Meego (hope to have fully functional on N900) because we really need them in a top class smartphone/tablet like N900.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

I have experienced problems with MfE after PR1.2. After the update, content is not always actually synced. In other words; In spite of manual or automatic sync, most of the time no objects is transferred to the phone. No error message is given.

I deleted the profile and added at fresh profile. This seemed to do the trick a few days, but now it's acting up again.

Anyone experienced this? Any solutions?

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

I also noticed much incresed time needed to enter to a folder. For example, when i select inbox, it'll think about 20 - 30 sec, before i can see the content. Right after i got 1.2, it was ok. it seems to get slower everyday...

That is probably a general E-mail app bug rather than something specific to MfE, which is what this thread is about.

I came across similar situation (an MS excel 2007 file not opening) on my N900 with Documents To Go ( a licensed version). I was able to open other excel files. This specic file is too large, and has graphics. May be for you some reason like this. I did not take this serious, as I have access to PC immediately.

I have PR 1.2 firmware but still not able to configure the MFE, i have Exchange 2003 SP2. I read somewhere that for mfe to work with N900, the exchange should support non-provisioned device and without this mfe won't work.

That is correct. Ask your Exchange admins if you are unsure.

I managed yesterday to set up synch with my google calendar.
Not sure if I remember how i did it though. I downloaded a World cup fixture calender into google and then exported it and imported into the N900 calendar. It is meant to autoupdate as the fixtures change for the knockout stages but we will see.

Will it be possible to setup and sync MfE acount for Exchange Server 2003 with all latest Services Packs & updates, and Exchange Server 2003 already setup to work with non-provisied devices; Device is N900 which has Maemo 5 verison 10.2010.19-1.002;

If so, can any one please tell me the entire process, including any certificates to be imported and how to import them, etc?.

Thanks in advance.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

1 Attachment(s)
I'm failing to sync calendar after going in to PR1.2. It just hangs at the end of calendar sync. With PR1.1.1 there was no problems.

Notes from current installation
  • Exchange server version is 2003 post-SP2
  • Provisioning is not in use by the server
  • PR1.2 was flashed w/eMMC (all latest versions, with Fiasco > eMMC as Wiki instructs)
  • Same MfE settings as with PR1.1.1 (that worked correctly)
  • Emails and contacts sync ok
  • From first sync, Calendar copies the appointments from Exchange to local calendar, but then hangs (waited for few hours, sync was still "running")
  • If I end sync and restart it, Exchange will get duplicate appointments (so N900 sends back the entries received from the first sync)

Attached is the end of syslog (from the last added calendar event forwards). Only calendar sync is enabled for this instance. This is first sync for clean calendar.

So any pointers or tips what could be going on with the sync?
