pr 1.2 has qt 4.6.....that's kind of a big deal

Have we been looking at the same changelog?

So does QT 4.6 mean we should see a huge flood of great apps?

meego currently supports qt 4.6, as well as symbian ^3(i think).
so if an app is made with qt 4.6 then it should work on all platforms

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) and its release date

Instead of ranting why the firmware still isn't here, I'll ask a more constructive question:

Is there any chance that PR1.2 or future updates will enable 720p video-playback? The media experience is already amazing, but you know, I couldn't resist asking. Technically I think it is possible, having already tried it with mplayer, though the picture lagged alot. Maybe it just needs to be optimizied specifically for the device? I'm sure people would welcome it. 1080p would be useless, but 1280x720 could be nice.

Would it make any difference? The N900 screen is 800 × 480, where 720p is 1280x720 ?? I guess it may be slightly better than 480p (720x480)...

Higher res video still would look better than a lower res or a pixel matching resolution (800x480) video on the N900's screen. I did get 1280x720 videos to play on my N900 using mpalyer. But it is painfully slow. About 3-5 fps with my overclocked 1Ghz N900. Sound is fine but video is non-watchable and out of sync. Wish mplayer used the DSP. Then it may be able to play most HD files.

Guys small offtopic , sorry

I cant sign into Ovi Store , it says Nokia authentication system is down , is it ok? Cuz i can browse it but i cant download existing apps... i'm concerneds because I saw some people left reviews for apps dated April 13 etc, so I wonder maybe its a problem with my N900?

I ran a search in Ovi Maps one and i got locations 12,000 Km away? I've checked all the settings it's set to the Australian region...

It's useless!

Besides that great phone... the Skype thing is cool, I walk in my house it picks up the wireless and I can receive calls via it... nice feature...

It's virtually impossible for a video to look better than a video with the same resolution as the screen. You're almost certainly better off reencoding an HD video to 800x480 using a good encoder with a good scaler than relying on the N900 to do high quality scaling in real time. Either way, you're looking at a 800x480 picture on the N900, any other resolution is physically impossible. The only case where it might be a bad idea to reencode is when you've got the video in a stupidly low bitrate to begin with. [/offtopic]

Of course it will, thats why as soon as its out everyone will jump on the "where is pr1.3 bandwagon", but i for one will not (am not) gonna let a few bugs stop me enjoying what is an amazing device, at the end of the day a few bugs are well worth it when you consider just how open this platform is,

I still find myself looking here at least 5 or 6 times a day for news though, i know it'll come when it comes, but i realy hope its soon!

It will. So will PR 1.3, Meego 1.1, iPhone OS 4.0, Windows, Linux, OSX, and any other operating system in the past, now, and in the future.

Maybe i wrong, but when you receive your phone and two days after, one month to repair it (PR 1.0), i call that of swindle not a problem of bugs.

My firmware is rock solid stable as far as I've seen. Can do a load more than the N900 can do too, a lot less fiddly!

Can you make it any more apparent that you're clueless about software development? I mean, really....

I will quote myself, AGAIN:

Look at it this way. With any major project (especially hardware/software) there will always be issues/defects. ALWAYS. Things aren't shipped when they are "bug free" - they are shipped when there is reasonable confidence that the major issues have been identified and fixed or deemed low impact. I'd rather a company be honest and delay something a little rather than chuck it out the door with what may possibly be serious defects.

What would happen to the device's reputation and future sales if they prematurely sent it out the door knowing there is a possibility of something going horribly wrong? Look at the guest account issue with the latest version of OS X, for instance. Some more exposure to beta testers may have very well exposed that issue, who knows; yet obviously the decision was made to release it. It is also quite likely that some people in Apple's release management team were aware of it and decided that it is not that likely end users would follow that scenario.
