Re: NYC Nokia store is selling
I have been pretty impressed so far. I'll be playing with the phone all day today no doubt. Things that I ran into last night (not in a state of being awake to really evaluate anything, lol):
I had some weirdness when charging. The phone shut off and then I couldn't turn it on even after charging for a while. Reseating the battery did the trick. I'm guessing its just cuz I ran the battery all the way down combined with the weird responsiveness of the power button (like how you have to hold it for a sec until the unit boots). The other thing is with OS responsiveness which is a little more worrying. It seemed like pretty often I would 'click' an app/button (icon graphically indicating that it was clicked) but then the app would not launch/button wouldn't do anything. Anyone else running into this? I'm still getting used to the resistive screen (coming from "that other phone"). |
Re: NYC Nokia store is selling
Oh yeah and as for an on topic post. Given how much BS was handed to me about waiting lists/inventory for the N900 at the New York store, and how it was actually getting one, I think it's safe to say you could just go pick one up. I'd call the store to be sure (especially if the store is way out of your way), but take whatever they tell you with a grain of salt.

Then again, the dynamics and potential exposure of issues would be increased now due to more people using the device and more people that are not techies. We will probably see a lot of posts now about issues and especially from smartphoners. I tried to warn the board about a month ago ;) This launch seems too screwed up for the device not to have some issues that will need addressing. |

Re: NYC Nokia store is selling
So if the wait wasn't to fix firmware issues (which maybe it was... for such an open product we really aren't hearing much about it), maybe it was delayed because the marketing department looked at the N8XX sales figures and didn't get the factory building enough of them? The past few months have seen a ton of message activity at talk.maemo.org, much more than I'd seen in the years I've been (mostly) lurking here. I've also not seen anywhere near the online press covering a maemo device in the past (I only found out about the N800 by accident when I saw it for sale at the Compusa going out of business sale).
Maybe Nokia misread the demand for the N900 and is trying to ramp up production? If that's the case, maybe Amazon really doesn't know when they'll get it. |

I picked mine up this morning and luckily didn't have to use a name to get it because I was 2nd on the line. They may be out of non-preordered units though. About to go play with it now cuz I just returned from the dentist. Before I left I made it a point to ask how many units they had left and they said 10 to 15. I left right after I got mine at about 10:30 so I'm sure they might be out now. THANKS TO RAPPAREE AND MEGACRAZY FOR YOUR HELP GUYS!!! :D PS.. Where's the Canadian guy I met this morning? C, How you like the phone? |
