Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

I also have an issue since PR1.2
I am used to read my emails offline after having sync my work mails

For some reason, since PR1.2, some emails cannot be shown offline. It is requesting a connection.

I have another issue as well with was already the case before PR1.2 and I wonder if anybody understand why.
For some reasons, to sync with my work mails, I have to open parameters, save them (without changing anything) before sync otherwise it will just not work!?

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

@Juhnu

Maybe it's a time-out issue. Vitaly told me to try the following at least for testing purposes.

If MfE account is not configured yet, when MfE wizard is started, somewhere between entering credentials and first sync page, switch to x-terminal application
and execute the following commands:
gconftool-2 -s --type=int /apps/activesync/ActiveSyncAccount1Temp/timeout1 600
gconftool-2 -s --type=int /apps/activesync/ActiveSyncAccount1Temp/timeout2 -- -1
gconftool-2 -s --type=int /apps/activesync/ActiveSyncAccount1Temp/timeout3 -- -1

Or for already configured account, execute the following commands from x-terminal:

gconftool-2 -s --type=int /apps/activesync/ActiveSyncAccount1/timeout1 600
gconftool-2 -s --type=int /apps/activesync/ActiveSyncAccount1/timeout2 -- -1
gconftool-2 -s --type=int /apps/activesync/ActiveSyncAccount1/timeout3 -- -1

"-1" means "wait forever".

After having those changes made open properties tab of MfE and click "save" so that those change will take effect on next sync.

Thanks tomster. I changed the time-outs as instructed, but still the problem remains. I have attached a full syslog where:
 • Existing MfE setup in N900 used
 • N900 calendar cleared of any entries
 • Only calendar sync is active
 • Run "Full resynchronisation"
 • When Mfe sync hangs, wait a bit and then cancel sync
I can't find any clear errors from the log that would point to a sync problem.

I did a test with another "clean" Exchange account (it has had no calendar activity ever). I had only calendar sync enabled. With this account the sync goes through.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

I had the very same problem when upgrading to PR1.2. Only difference is that I am on a Scalix Server instead of Exchange. In technical terms this means I have to use the sync protocol (EAS) pre-set to version 2.5 as described in the Heartbeat Wiki. Not sure whetther Exchange 2003 would require this as well...

I set up a new account after upgrading to PR 1.2 and could only manage to sync 1 time. From there sync failed any time I had the calendar check box activated. The logs also showed a time-out on calendar sync. I'd guess (though can't read the logs in detail) that there was some sort of mis-communication between server and device on sync flags. Either server or device couldn't determine what content already has been synced and what hasn't.

After talking to Vitaly he suggested to try the above mentioned fix (on a existing account). In my case it didn't help either. At least not instantly.

I then deleted/cleared the calendar on my device and tried again. From there everything worked fine and sync is back up again.

As of my experience I'd suggest the following (if applicable in your scenario):

Be careful with deletion of contacts or calendar on device. Though sync fails, chances are that deleting the data from your device also deletes data on your server! I ran into that...

Backup
Delete MfE account
Delete contacts and calendar on device
Set up a new account (might wanna try time-out fix or EAS 2.5)
Run initial full sync (email, calendar and contatcs)
On 2nd sync calendar should give you the same troubles again
uncheck calendar in MfE properties
delete calendar on device again
Do a normal sync without calendar -> sync should work fine now
Now activate calendar sync again in MfE properties
Do NOT do a full resync
Sync manually

In my case it worked from there.

--edit--
After reading your logs more carefully I am no longer that sure that your issues are the same as mine. I don't see a time-out or http 500 error...

MfE on the N900 works with Exchange 2010
If initial sync still fails (even if all settings are ok), please check the solution here. It's a server side permission problem that your admin can easily resolve.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

I think synching Email causes a problem. If you just synch contacts and calendar it should work (although i did not synch contacts)

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

tomster, thanks for your detailed post. I tried the same but it did NOT work for me on my
N900 PR1.2 Exchange Server 2003 with 'Enable Unsupported Devices' checked. :(

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

You're welcome. Just trying to help...

As I wrote above I do not have experience with MS Exchange servers at all. But I do remember that MfE didn't work on Exchange 2003 with factory-new firmware. This has been fixed in one of the subsequent releases.

In my case sync even then didn't work out of the box because there were problems with auto-negotitation on initial contact. Seemed like my device and Scalix server couldn't agree which EAS protocol version to use. Vitaly came up with a work-around pre-setting EAS to v 2.5 permanently as described in the Heartbeat Wiki. Since then everything worked like a charm on PR 1.1.1 - until PR 1.2 came out.

Though trying to set up the MfE-account on both a OTA-updated device as well as a flashed-from-scratch one I didn't succeed. Also the fix to enlonging time-outs didn't work. Finally I got it up and running by following the above mentioned steps. More or less trial'n'error ;-)

But be patient. Vitaly will read through this thread from time to time and as soon he comes up with a fix/ has time to brwose through your log files he'll post it here. He just seems to be really busy at the moment.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Thanks tomster, I apprecaite that gesture of helping nature.

As a temporary relief I am using POP3 settings for my work mails, synching calendar manually. Hopefully my N900 wll work with MfE / Exchange Server 2003 in the coming days. I will wait for Vitaly to see this message and help people like me.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

To speed things up a bit I suggest you post your device's Activesync logs here. A short Howto you'll find in the MfE Heartbeat here on the wiki. Don't forget to blank-out your personal credentials like server, login and password.

Sorry to ask the basics. How can I make the logs? Can you point me to any URL that you are aware of? Thanks.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

@phlaguna

You can find guides to enable logging from MfE Wiki

Additional logging options can be found from bugzilla entry #7971: see comments 12 and 32

It seems that my problem is similar to the bugzilla #7971, but reverse: my Mfe calendar sync worked before (pr.1.1/1.1.1) but was broken after update to pr1.2 (#7971 fix was implemented in internal 10.2010.14-16).

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Can anyone confirm that under PR1.2, MFE will still not work with certificates that do not have the CA field populated?

When setting up the connection I now get a prompt asking me if I wish to ignore certificate security, to which I agree, but unfortunately I still get the same "Exchange server requires secure connection or account is disabled" error message.

Still love the phone, but it is very disappointing that something as simple as this hasn't been addressed in 2 major firmware releases. :(

Here is another log, this time with the added switches from bugzilla #7971.

The log is taken from the following run:
 • Clear N900 calendar, delete N900birthday calendar
 • Delete MfE account from N900
 • Create new MfE account on N900
 • Select only calendar for sync
 • Default settings for sync
 • Logging started just before MfE account creation is completed (before inital sync)
 • Let sync continue for few minutes after calendar progress bar is stuck at 99%
 • Cancel sync and account creation
 • Stop logging

Result of this procedure is:
 • N900 calendar has received entries for previous 2 weeks and future
 • Exchange/Outlook has duplicate entries for all the N900 calendar entries above
 • The duplicates appear when I cancel the sync

So if Vitaly (or someone with knowledge) is around, any tips are appreciated.

I have not created bugzillla report yet, but if someone deems it necessary I can do that.

My company has 15000 employees. I don't want to do a full sync contact. I know I can import one by one but I also don't want to keep them in my N900 address book.

With my old N95 I could remotely search contacts and use it in my email but now I can't. Any intention to add this old capability in the future.

The capabilitys is actually there (sort of). Go to Contacts, tap All Contacts and select Get Contacts. Then select Import Mail Exch. contacts and enter name or part of name in "Search Mail Exch. contacts". When you have found the contact you need, select that contact, import it into the device and search it from Contacts in the device.

The user interface is horrible (probably very little attention has been paid to user interface and usability in developing N900), but you can use the feature when no other way is available.

If you need better Exchange support, I would go for a Symbian device or a device from another manufacturer.

Need some help setting up a MfE on my N900 using my own domain (just bought form bluehost.com)

Get the famous message:

MfE asks for:

Email: <email>

Port: 443

I read through a few pages of this post but too many entries to go through. Can anyone help?

bluehost.com gave me the following settings:

Are you certain bluehost runs Exchange servers for mail and offers MfE access to them? In a quick glance through their site, I didn't find any mention of MfE support, and it appears they're running Apache on Fedora Linux, so they don't seem to be a Microsoft shop.

Yeah, you'll need to set up a standard POP3/IMAP account (or use Nokia Messaging).

It`s very strange. Everything works perfect on me instead of the Calendar sync. Contacts, task, email perfect but I receive not one event from within my calendar nor I can add events by sync to my mail account. *grmpf*

Hi Guys I'm a broken record but I just cracked open a beautifull N900 here in Canada. I have the dreaded Exchance Requires A Secured Connection or the Account is dissabled erro.

I have been reading all the posts this week end and the closest possible solutions I can find are the enable onprovisioned phones on Exchange2007 with the latest SP.

I have also done this

Have you tried simply saving the certificate using Internet Explorer?

You can usually access your Exchange Server account via a web interface - ask your systems administrator for the web address - and if you do this using Internet Explorer you can simply click on the padlock (that will appear next to the web address bar) to view the certificate

Click on the padlock and then click on 'View Certificate'. Then click on the 'Details' tab at the top followed by the 'Copy to File...' button at the bottom. Click on 'Next >' and select PKCS (.P7B) and tick the 'Include all certificates' and click on 'Next >' again. Choose a folder and name to save it (I'd choose the desktop to make life easier - call the file whatever you want) and then click on 'Next >' again. Then click on 'Finish' to complete the process.

Now find that file on your desktop and double click on it. It should open a new window probably showing two panes with a folder. Double click on the folder and continue double clicking on subsequent folders until you come across one or more certificates displayed in the bigger right-hand pane. This is where you'll find the certificate you need to install on your N900.

If you double click on each certificate it will open a window similar to the window that opened when you clicked on the padlock on Internet Explorer. Double click on each one and you will find that most of the certificates will be issued by one of the certificates in your list which will have been self generated.

You need to now save the self-generated certificate by clicking on the 'Details' tab at the top followed by the 'Copy to File...' button at the bottom. Click on 'Next >' and this time select Base-64 encoded (.CER) and click on 'Next >' again. Choose a folder and name to save it (again just choose the desktop to make life easier and call the file whatever you want) and then click on 'Next >' again. Then click on 'Finish' to complete the process.

You now need to import this .CER file on your N900. Copy the file across to your N900, then open the File Manager, find the file you copied across and select it. Your N900 will display details about the certificate but this time it should include an 'Install' button which you should tap on. And that's it - you should then be able to sync with your office Exchange.
.

I have also done this.

http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...&postcount=171

I have updated to the latest firware. My cert is self signed with a CA .

Any screen shots or videos would be a great help. Not sure what is going wrong.

Thanks

soooooo, is the default mail application extensible? or can we find a way to shoehorn thunderbird or claws (or whatever) to work with the airsync protocol for exchange?

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Hallo at all!

Have a problem to sync my new n900 with our exchange 2003 server.
What i have done:

activate allow non-provisioning devices on the exchange.
We have a squid as revers proxy. So i have import that certificate in the certificate manager.
Now the certificate is showing as .pem file in /home/user/.maemosec-certs/ssl-ca/ and also in the manager. But the sync do not work. Without the secure connection, over our intrannet the sync work. We have also some iphones and htc and these are still working.
I have installed pr1.2 on the n900.

Have anybody a idea

Here are my logs

Have a problem to sync my new n900 with our exchange 2003 server.
What i have done:

activate allow non-provisioning devices on the exchange.
We have a squid as revers proxy. So i have import that certificate in the certificate manager.
Now the certificate is showing as .pem file in /home/user/.maemosec-certs/ssl-ca/ and also in the manager. But the sync do not work. Without the secure connection, over our intrannet the sync work. We have also some iphones and htc and these are still working.
I have installed pr1.2 on the n900.

Have anybody a idea

Thanks for your help
and sorry for the bad english.

I've just had a look at the server, and the certificate used is invalid (it's using the CN of srv02, instead of plank.dyndns.info), so that's why MfE is refusing to connect.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Hi all-

I just got a replacement N900 as my charger port pulled out. The new software does not sync my notes which appear under the calendar pull down. This used to work in Pr 1.1. I did not verify that it worked in 1.2 when I installed it on the old device. However, the new device does not sync my notes from the exchange server. Is this known behavior?

Thanks,
Fred

I figure I'll try posting here first before considering a new thread.

So far it appears that with the installation of mfefolders, the N900 can then have push email for specific folders. Is this really the case?

Here's some background:

I am regularly on-call for a network support center, and by on-call its because we don't have enough volume for a dedicated person in the office, nevertheless we have 4 hour fix SLAs for various customers. This means I NEED to be aware of emails, yet don't want to be woken by the various colleagues working late or Cisco newsletters in the early hours of the morning (I sleep little enough as is).

I currently use an E71 with Roadsync, because this lets me sychronise my emails in various folders with a very LOUD ringtone (when on my on-call profile) that will wake me instantly in the night. All my emails are sorted by on-server rules into various folders such that nothing should land in my inbox in the night.

(the iphone using colleagues need to keep a laptop turned on all night and have a seperate on-call set of outlook rules they activate which start foobar on auto-play).

Is this possible on the N900 at this point in time? I heard something about issues with notifications with mfefolders and wasn't sure what was meant.

You can select which folders to synch, yes, and if synchronisation is set to "Always on" then this is effectively push email.

That sounds similar to what I do - I only have the important folders set to synchronise, so I know any incoming emails need looking at.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what you're trying to do, then yes, it's possible with the N900 currently. I've no idea what issues you've heard of with mfefolders though - I think there's a limitation where you need to have all parent folders synchronised for a child to be synchronised (or to show up in the email client anyway, so it may be a limitation in MfE/modest instead).

Wonderful, I don't remember where I read that, it was a bit confusing and I've been reading about a million different threads and sites. :)

Thanks for the clear statement. Customer ringtones for email are also possible? (should be), I need to have loud and long (duration) ringtones (and vary them) in order to be sure I actually wake up after a 26 hour day. :)

You can use any audio clip as the email alert tone, yes.

If you've not actually got an N900 yet, the important thing to check is that your company's Exchange server will work with non-provisionable devices - this is the main cause of issues with the N900s MfE implementation.

Pretty sure it does, but I wrote the MIS guy to check. Generally our security policies are fairly loose when it deals with stuff like that.

Re: Mail for Exchange (MfE). Blame me here, pls

Over the last two weeks I am finding that my N900 battery is discharging very quickly when I am not on a wifi connection. It appears that the N900 is continually using the HSPA connection as the 3.5G symbol is showing. I have tried closing all other applications, but the symbol remains on. If I change the MfE settings to manual sync then the symbol changes back to 3G. However if I manually sync then the 3.5G symbol stays on. It is as though the MfE is not "hanging" up when using the HSPA connection, but not having this problem on wifi.

Is there any option other than reflashing to resolve this problem?

Reflashing won't help. It is not a problem, actually, it is just the way it works: n900 is designed to keep persistent data connection, but, unfortunately, the real problem is HSPA does drain battery very quick. You may use "autodisconnect" program to work that around.
There is active connection indicator (looking at cellular data network icon is wrong place to find out if data connection is active, it just shows if one is _available_), it looks like two arrows in round shape for cellular networks.

How come it has worked fine (ie disconnecting) for the last six months and now for the last couple of weeks it has stopped working?

This also started happening to me when my company put me on Exchange 2010. I recently had my device RMA'd because of the female usb port falling out, and they replaced it. Starting from scratch I set everything up (just restored from backup) and everything works now.

You might try completely wiping your device and then restoring the state. No guarantees from me tho. :D

I have a similar problem, sync works only backwards for calender and not at all for contacts. Email works fine.
