Technology market will eventually evolve in a way that users don't buy a product if it has a lot of defects, but right now there is no such option from none of the competitors.

Heh. Whoever manages to work out a way to release products with a very very low number of defects, whether by development tools, methodologies et.c. will quite likely become a legend and filthy, filthy rich.

Not that every other field is defect free, far from it.

still i cant see a feature that activates the front camera. (though the need for this is minimal)

Make it as simple as possible. Never over-engineer\over-spec things.

Making customers not care about serious defects because they love the brand is different from actually being nearly defect-free :D

That too :D But it serves more as a PLAN B thing..

On the design front, they cut down everything unnecessary and make the product as simple as possible (more limited).... then they polish what's left.

I know I am getting off-topic here, but anyway this thread is not that serious... :p

Yes, no every field will be defect free and even the car example have some recalls, and comparing with IT complexity is not that fair. But even in the IT SW & HW field, there are different demands for military use for example. The level of security and reliability are obviously greater than the ones for the general market.

The quantity of "acceptable" defects is driven by the product purpose and its target market. As we get more dependent of technology each day, mobile phone is also getting a lot of different uses. In a lot of countries people are already using their phones for payment transactions... In this example, if someone stops carrying the wallet and credit card trusting in their mobile, no doubt the SW & HW must be more bug free than today, specially in the security area.

Maybe. I am not convinced that this will change anytime soon, though - even with extensive test automation, new coding standards et.c. things always fall through the cracks. But I may be wrong, hopefully :)

Actually with cars increasingly becoming more sophiscated computer wise, there's problems bound to happen (See Toyota recently). Though I believe those weren't the first. I think Ford or GM is starting to have that issue too.

I'm unfamilar with other platforms regarding the bug issue. Does Android and iPhone OS publicly list all the bug fixes and bugs in the system?

One important issue to consider is that, by reducing functionality and locking down things like multi-tasking, Apple got focus on their innovative UI.

I am not an iPhone fan, but I must admit their user interface was far more intuitive for non-IT folks, and it is still hard to beat in this aspect. Nevertheless, I still don't recommend mobiles like N900, Android or iPhone to any friend/family who doesn't have basic computer knowledge. Even someone with basic knowledge sometimes does not have skills to do a simple software installation, so there is a lot to improve in the UI area if mobiles vendors want to increase their sales.

Hmmm...Possibly for Android, unlikely for Apple. Anyone have any actual data on this (not anecdotal evidence)?

Yes, actually it is quite common.

Toyota may have drawn the media spotlight, but they're not the only company who has been knowingly shipping vehicles with unintended acceleration problems, for instance.

Jumping to another field, there are plenty of medication commercials on television, ones that often mention death in their laundry lists of super fun possible side effects. So, not only is death acceptable as a possible side effect of a medication, it's such a minor concern to consumers that having it mentioned doesn't ruin the effectiveness of the ad.

The trick is not to make it immediately to the consumer. o.O

It's kind of hard to imagine any simpler 'smartphone' than the iphone.. program installs\purchases are truly a one-tap operation from the built in appstore application. Perhaps just the initial setup (mail server settings, wifi connectivity, whatnot). But I'm already thinking of buying my mom an ipad w/ a keyboard dock. She's the least technical person I know and I think she'd do just fine with the iPad (browsing, emails, IM, music and video playback, photo viewing, etc)

@Laughing Man:

Apple release simplified changelogs which don't list 100% of the fixes\additions...

http://mac.softpedia.com/progChangel...log-38026.html

On major OS update, they release a marketing page for it -.-

Re: Speculation about the next firmware (PR1.2) and its release date

We can consider Nokia is fixing bugs on PR1.2. If as it seems new version is 10.2010.09-3 this gives more than a month and a half of code freezing, so I'm looking for a rock solid firmware, not like the 1.0 one, which even with a month delay, it had *MANY* bugs.

I dont really mind if they take their time, I know how things like that can go. but I was hoping that I could get the firmware before I leave for MExico City next friday (april 23rd). I wont have GPRS internet there, and will have to rely on spotty wifi whenever its available. O well, guess I have 1 week left!! :o

If your trip is work related you should have access to your email, so you could probably updating by NSU, because OTA update won't be likely anyway... even if you never installed anything from Extras-devel.
