what? I thought this thread was CEO of jolla ;)

Correct. They can have many reason for not want to get out there. They might lack the skills of marketing, focus on china only wants to sell a limited number of phone to handle supply and demand with waiting times, only selling to geeks and not avrage joe or 1000 of other valid reasons. There a lots of things we dont know.

But one thing is clear. Keeping a low profile will sell fewer devices. :(

Keeping a low profile or simply forming their strategy?

Either way, I do finally get your point. But as keen as you seem for them to be 'on top of things' promotion-wise I still reckon they know what they are doing and are doing it their way for their reasons.

On a sidenote, if the eventual device is soap-shaped or even circular (god forbid) I'm firmly blaming YOU :D

Anybody care to speculate what the "groundbreaking things in local network" that Jolla is cooperating with Joikusoft to do?

Jokeusoft still owe me money from their Freud software to n900. I hope they aren't that involved in this. If so, I so will sue them.

But I do like "groundbreaking things in local network" But I have no clue what that could be. Some sharing/storing option via network is my guess.

They did quite a good job for the wifi hotspot in the N9, and they are involved in this, read Q12:

I guess the second is nothing groundbreaking though ;)

You can be dead at any minute. Won't miss a chance to see a jolla phone. I'm very patient. In my profession you have to be extremely patient and accurate and a little crazy possibly or it ends bad.

Now back to jolla.

This has nothing to do with patients.

I obviously am with you(on Jolla finally announcing their phone) but I just began to truly enjoy my N9, from thedead1440 i learnt some flashing skills, got few mods installed, played around with Qt Creator, tbh only now i am beginning to see the true potential and beauty of N9 and if jolla phone would come out tomorrow i might not get it right away. As i feel community just started to properly show what N9 can do. I also have high hopes for the kernel update project for the N9.

Twitter should never be your place for press releases. That's like taking a piss into the ocean. It might make a difference if people see it who are nearby. Otherwise, it's lost in the sheer mass of stuff out there.

Twitter is for marketing to an engaged customer. As it stads, 14k engaged customers might reach another 14k, but that's nothing compared to placing your information where it is picked up by bigger, more connected media streams.

That is the problem I see with Jolla. I follow them and I'm still having to search for stuff, or follow more people than I'd rather via Twitter just for information.

That is inefficient as heck.

Making a planet aggregation shouldn't be too hard. Just collect potential list of blogs and other feeds related to Mer and derivatives. I can start a separate thread for that. When we'll have some comprehensive list, it'll be just a question of making a site. I'm not an experienced site designer, but may be someone can help with it. May be even opentablets guys, since they already made something of that sort for their news section. I'll post a question there, and will inform back here if they are interested.

We can move that to merproject.org later if they are interested, but it's better to make something rolling, than waiting forever.

I created a dedicated thread here for feeds proposals as well:

What do you think of map and navigation? Do you think the allowed to use nokia maps or google maps?

or skip it and move their own way?

Slow down bud. We're not even sure if the final form-factor will be soap-bar or disc shaped :p
So speculating this far is pretty pointless, isn't it?
Unless you're just amusing yourself and deliberately perpetuating all this speculation coz you're bored...

leaning towards a disk shaped. However, haven't been able to verify this yet. Maps and navigation is pretty crucial for a smartphone today. Don't you think. I doub't jolla develop their own navigation application. Could sygic be the anser once more.

Please do that. In the meantime I will try to hit Jolla's head. My biggest concern is that they using n9 as the reference device and trying to copy it as much as possible. N9 ll would not do it.

My hope is that they think outside the box and continue with the disk phone.

I dunno about hitting Jollas head - but I think you've hit yours and now you're off it :D

Myself, I wouldn't say using the N9 as a 'reference' would be too bad a thing - obviously with better / faster / upgraded h/w, maybe a slightly bigger screen, but similar form. And swipe would be superb.

Jolla maximum plus with 5" sceen+swipe+all software is better, especially contacts, mail must be improved atleast 50%.

But this will be a dev device phone and not really a business phone so some usability trade off have to be made.

I personally don't use neither G+ nor Twitter or FB. So Jolla's Twitter communication is a rather unpleasant treatment as well.

May be something like Mer planet can be created, which will aggregate feeds from developers and other involved people around Mer into one user friendly feed? http://planet.merproject.org or something?

Something like this sort:

http://planet.mozilla.org
http://planet.debian.org
http://planetkde.org
http://planet.gnome.org
http://planet.jabber.org

It'll really be very helpful to see what's going on.

Yep, that's what I want. A communicator! Not some lame "smartphone".

zimon 2012-09-23 17:28

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

I've been using now SGS3 for almost 4 months. I was using N900 before that for 3 years. I must say, I do not miss mechanical keyboard anymore. I have become quite fast typing with Swiftkey auto-correction, also (and mainly) in portrait mode/orientation. I did have a small bluetooth keyboard with me on a vacation, but I didn't really need it and prolly won't keep it with me on future trips.

I'd rather use extra weight and thickness to have larger battery, than keyboard. I used to think otherwise just 4 months ago.

shmerl 2012-09-23 17:30

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

It all depends on how much you commonly need to type. For some cases - touchscreen is enough. But if you need it often - it's becoming annoying. Especially if autocorrection is out of question.

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

I guess i am the only one who does not want a physical keyboard?

I have typed on N900 and i did like it but N900 is too think if they could get a qwerty keyboard in a size factor thinner than N900 then yes i would like it!

shmerl 2012-09-23 17:57

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

N950 is way slimmer than N900. Something along those lines would be great. Rich Green once called it - "elegant hardware".

Nope, you're not alone. I despise them for the most part because it usually means I have to be quite accurate at hitting a less forgiving, physical target to type out something and all of my hints/replacements still happen on the screen and I have to reach up to hit that.

I'm not a fan unless they're done incredibly well of hardware keyboards. I personally didn't find the N950 all that "perfect".

Nothing can top Ctrl-Shift-cursor_keys for quick selection, and actually feeling where keys are. Try that with your crappy softkeybd's and their 'selection arrows'.

Honestly, if I'm using commands in a terminal that require me to admin a machine, I've long shifted to an external bluetooth keyboard to expedite those type of things.

Nothing like catching a finger cramp trying hit a chiclet sized set of keys to admin my servers whereas it's easier to pull out a slightly bigger keyboard when it's needed.

It's rare enough that I'm out in the field to require such an activity, but when I do, I use a bluetooth keyboard now. But that's just me. I rarely require that now, just delegate that to somebody still in the office now.

I do get what you're saying, and agree actually. But I've personally given up wanting to do all of that stuff on my phone. Tablets are better suited for me (full pentesting suite on my tablet helped with that decision).

Dave999 2012-09-23 18:46

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

if jolla moves to the world of keyboards, they can easly be market leaders in that area since very few alternatives are available. At least in some parts of the world. They are going for low hanging fruit!

shmerl 2012-09-23 18:50

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

Yep. The "black sheep" method can actually work against some brain dead market assumptions.

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones

That is the first time he talks about n900 like that. Can we really belive jolla actuall pull that keyboard off?
