Correct. They can have many reason for not want to get out there. They might lack the skills of marketing, focus on china only wants to sell a limited number of phone to handle supply and demand with waiting times, only selling to geeks and not avrage joe or 1000 of other valid reasons. There a lots of things we dont know. But one thing is clear. Keeping a low profile will sell fewer devices. :( |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Keeping a low profile or simply forming their strategy?
Either way, I do finally get your point. But as keen as you seem for them to be 'on top of things' promotion-wise I still reckon they know what they are doing and are doing it their way for their reasons. On a sidenote, if the eventual device is soap-shaped or even circular (god forbid) I'm firmly blaming YOU :D |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Anybody care to speculate what the "groundbreaking things in local network" that Jolla is cooperating with Joikusoft to do?

But I do like "groundbreaking things in local network" But I have no clue what that could be. Some sharing/storing option via network is my guess. EDiT: Can this be it http://www.joiku.com/news_items/32-j...-launched-soon |

Twitter is for marketing to an engaged customer. As it stads, 14k engaged customers might reach another 14k, but that's nothing compared to placing your information where it is picked up by bigger, more connected media streams. That is the problem I see with Jolla. I follow them and I'm still having to search for stuff, or follow more people than I'd rather via Twitter just for information. That is inefficient as heck. |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Making a planet aggregation shouldn't be too hard. Just collect potential list of blogs and other feeds related to Mer and derivatives. I can start a separate thread for that. When we'll have some comprehensive list, it'll be just a question of making a site. I'm not an experienced site designer, but may be someone can help with it. May be even opentablets guys, since they already made something of that sort for their news section. I'll post a question there, and will inform back here if they are interested.
We can move that to merproject.org later if they are interested, but it's better to make something rolling, than waiting forever. I created a dedicated thread here for feeds proposals as well: http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=86975 |

I like it mate. Would it be a good idea to pop a line in the OP asking to keep that thead "discussion free" to prevent it from becoming diverted off topic too? |

I'm not sure how to do it though. Where is that contact?

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
What do you think of map and navigation? Do you think the allowed to use nokia maps or google maps?
or skip it and move their own way? |

Slow down bud. We're not even sure if the final form-factor will be soap-bar or disc shaped :p So speculating this far is pretty pointless, isn't it? Unless you're just amusing yourself and deliberately perpetuating all this speculation coz you're bored... |

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
I dunno about hitting Jollas head - but I think you've hit yours and now you're off it :D
Myself, I wouldn't say using the N9 as a 'reference' would be too bad a thing - obviously with better / faster / upgraded h/w, maybe a slightly bigger screen, but similar form. And swipe would be superb. |

But this will be a dev device phone and not really a business phone so some usability trade off have to be made. |

My translation from the article: Jussi Hurmola: "Mechanical keyboard is not dead. None has been able to make a traditional communicator in a long period. I think there is a demand for that. I sometimes use Nokia N900 myself." |

Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Yep, that's what I want. A communicator! Not some lame "smartphone".
|
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
I've been using now SGS3 for almost 4 months. I was using N900 before that for 3 years. I must say, I do not miss mechanical keyboard anymore. I have become quite fast typing with Swiftkey auto-correction, also (and mainly) in portrait mode/orientation. I did have a small bluetooth keyboard with me on a vacation, but I didn't really need it and prolly won't keep it with me on future trips.
I'd rather use extra weight and thickness to have larger battery, than keyboard. I used to think otherwise just 4 months ago. |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
It all depends on how much you commonly need to type. For some cases - touchscreen is enough. But if you need it often - it's becoming annoying. Especially if autocorrection is out of question.
|
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
I guess i am the only one who does not want a physical keyboard?
I have typed on N900 and i did like it but N900 is too think if they could get a qwerty keyboard in a size factor thinner than N900 then yes i would like it! |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
N950 is way slimmer than N900. Something along those lines would be great. Rich Green once called it - "elegant hardware".

I'm not a fan unless they're done incredibly well of hardware keyboards. I personally didn't find the N950 all that "perfect". |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Nothing can top Ctrl-Shift-cursor_keys for quick selection, and actually feeling where keys are. Try that with your crappy softkeybd's and their 'selection arrows'.

Nothing like catching a finger cramp trying hit a chiclet sized set of keys to admin my servers whereas it's easier to pull out a slightly bigger keyboard when it's needed. It's rare enough that I'm out in the field to require such an activity, but when I do, I use a bluetooth keyboard now. But that's just me. I rarely require that now, just delegate that to somebody still in the office now. I do get what you're saying, and agree actually. But I've personally given up wanting to do all of that stuff on my phone. Tablets are better suited for me (full pentesting suite on my tablet helped with that decision). |
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
if jolla moves to the world of keyboards, they can easly be market leaders in that area since very few alternatives are available. At least in some parts of the world. They are going for low hanging fruit!
|
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Yep. The "black sheep" method can actually work against some brain dead market assumptions.
|
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
That is the first time he talks about n900 like that. Can we really belive jolla actuall pull that keyboard off?
|
Re: JollaMobile : Jolla continues Nokia's excellent work on #MeeGo based smartphones
Just wait and see.
