Good moderation is like the police - you only see it when you need it, but that doesn't mean they're not doing stuff to ensure you don't see the need.

I saw a thread in which some developers and others were being extremely rude to someone who dared to criticise the contents of some extras repository. It seemed obvious to me that moderators were watching and it didn't enter their heads to request politeness.

I'm sure if Quim was being criticised they would have been defending him in a flash.

Lately there's been a bit of spam on the wiki. I can see when a new spam page shows up because I'm subscribed to the wiki's rss feed. My default procedure is to a) remove the page contents, and b) rename ("move") the page itself to "spam".

Could the wiki get some automated spam detection?

Are you aware of a MediaWiki "automated spam detection" plugin? If so, please raise a bug asking for it to be installed.

There are (apparently) many different ways of combatting spam on MediaWiki installations. Some are listed here:

http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Combating_spam
http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:AkismetKlik

I don't know enough about our configuration to recommend specific techniques.

Hi,

Both amigadave & myself follow along & usually catch spam.

I'd be happy to give you admin privileges so that you can revert edits directly, if you'd like to share the policing role.

Dave.

(I haven't gone away you know - just not getting paid any more)

Bump. I notice the domain has just been renewed, with Nokia still the listed owner.

a Council Election is Due in a few weeks, as there been any plans made for the election? Is it even going ahead in these uncertain times?
Last thing we should do is put a hold on the election b/c that would be the first step of the beginning of the End.
I've looked but can't find no discussion around it.

It's much more important then ever to have a Council in these times.
I think first issue is keeping the Community and web resources (including repos) safe. Mirrors is the word of the day imho. http://www.ibiblio.org/ might be of help?
