Telegram would be good too :)

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
A proper Telegram app would be an excelent thing indeed. ;)

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Sure thing. And your efforts are certainly appreciated ceene!

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Hi ceene, I see a update in yowsup repos, is it useful for us ?

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
How about something fully open this time, so that we don't go through the same story again? Telegram is better than WhatsApp because at least the protocol is open, but it still depends on servers run by a single entity...
I've recently been looking at http://matrix.org, and it looks like it could fit the bill. It's fully open, it is based on federation ("like email" -- anyone can choose whichever server they want to work with -- including their own -- and the servers can all talk to each other) so there's no single point of failure. And the team working on it seems to be serious, my impression is that they've got a lot of things right... It's still in development, though there are already a bunch of quite mature implementations for various platforms (Web, Android, iOS, ...); nothing for n900 yet, though, that I know of, which is where this thread fits in... ;) It's such a shame to see all of the great work that ceene (and others) have put into yappari, only to be blocked by the whims of the single controlling entity. Wouldn't it be great if that effort instead went into something truly open, that can't be "taken away"...? Other options are tox or ring.cx, but I think matrix.org maps better to the model of WhatsApp (I mean, Yappari), because it is based around "rooms" (= groups) that are managed by a central server (one that you can choose, or run yourself, but there's still a server somewhere) which contains the full history and allows different devices to sync up the history; as opposed to tox and ring.cx, which are true peer-to-peer (which has some advantages, but also raises problems in terms of connecting from multiple devices, and also doesn't map perfectly to the model of groups). Of course, with any of these, there's the problem of "but nobody uses it!". Well, something that everyone uses, but that we can't access, isn't much help either... So either way we're going to have to try to pull our contacts into another network; that network might as well be one that's as open as possible... So, ceene, if you (or anyone else, for that matter) are listening to any of this chatter by all us backseat drivers, my vote would definitely be to go with matrix.org... my 2c ;) |

A wild idea would be that some new alternative app could communicate with other messaging platforms via central server that does all protocol conversions etc. (this could work with in-app plugins too, no need for conversion server). So at the start the app would only support Telegram and support for WA is added to the plugins/server later. |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
IMHO people using Yappari only wanted whatsapp compatibility.
Having Telegram is useless when all of your contacts only use Whatsapp. |

Hi to all, and Telegram work already on N900 with Pigdin and extra plugin...Miss whatsapp !!!!
Hope you find the way to ! regard's |

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
First of all, thank you Ceene for all the effort you're putting!
Really interesting discussion going on. I agree it would be awesome to have an N900 implementation of Telegram, as I love the quality of the software. But on the other hand I gotta agree with the people, like me, whose peers are mostly Whatsapp users and won't even consider installing a second messaging app let alone switching to Telegram. Add insult to injury that I live in a place where people are prone to mob mentality and blind worship, so they idolize Whatsapp in a way that the very mention of Telegram will send them into a hissy fit full of ironic comments about "the ten people in the world that use it anyway". So, for that reason I'm rooting for Ceene. Getting results or not, your work is appreciated and recognized, dude. We know you're trying! |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
brief 'reflection' regarding Telegram:
first of all, 'superhuman' Ceene said exactly what anyone could wish for .. he'll try to implement the now mandatory Whatsapp-encryption but if he fails (who wouldn't forgive him on that?) he won't abandon the whole project but give us a Telegram-adaptation. Now, if one points out, "won't use it, hence I (dare to) render it useless" I want to ask you to step back and watch the 'bigger' picture. if 'some' of us yappari-users find it useful than, by sheer logical deduction/reasoning, it is 'useful' (one does not represent everyone, if I may put it this way). the second point that is missing (or is it just me .. so I do ask for verification/clarification): the current (several years old) Telegram-plugin for pidgin constantly crashes and never manages to send a single message .. or do you guys have a different experience?? |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Actually the 'bigger' picture lies somewhere else.
Of course Telegram, as a software, is useful. It is a great piece of software and as some say, has lots of advantages over Whatsapp. The problem lies where (from my viewpoint) only a few people, mostly tech-savvy, actually use Telegram, because the main public is more driven by the hype over Whatsapp and aren't willing to step out of the comfort zone to adopt Telegram either "besides" or "instead of" Whatsapp. Telegram users I know account for about 5% of my contact list, and I'm sure many people in here is in the same situation. In my case the N900 isn't my main phone anymore, Yappari serves for the hack value of it, because it's awesome to see an alternative implementation of Whatsapp on an unsupported platform. But some people, I believe, still use their N900 as main phones and losing Whatsapp support on Yappari means they won't be able to message most of their contacts. So, these people aren't "daring to render Yappari useless" if Ceene switches to Telegram. From a technical standpoint a new software is always welcome. From the social standpoint, though, none of us only have tech-savvy or tech-curious friends. If you, by yourself, found a way to make Telegram your main app, that's great, but most of us are stuck with Whatsapp-only demographics. Those people are the ones who render Telegram (and not just Yappari if it switches to Telegram) useless. |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
while I enjoy reading your style of 'conduct' I still have problems with agreeing as, reduced to the core/bare meaning, all you say is "alternatives are useless--period". I deem it easily deductible from your writing you're smart enough not to actually believe this but if you take away your neat and fancy wording this is what remains.
I do not 'root' for Telegram; Whatsapp compatibility is the ultimate goal everyone reading this finally want's to get, I dare to state. But if this isn't an option for technical and/or other reasons, (intermediately/temporarily) switching to Telegram would indeed be better than nothing at all. |

Yappari was great and maybe can start working again, but ceene needs to decide for himself if it is worth the effort. Even after he fixes the current issue, nobody knows what Whatsapp will do with their codebase next year. |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Yappari has became the main reason for some community members to keep on using the N900 in the year 2016. At this moment I'm personally forced to use two different cellphone numbers, so I bought a N5 and installed sfdroid on top off SFO on it and start using it as a main device. The N900 is too much computer to be throwing away. I don't think it's a good idea to convince non-tech people to use Telegram since most off them like to make free phone calls for example.

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
hey t-b!
thanks for the Telegram-link you provided .. this works just excellent! (I probably should've 'conducted' a research on my own :$ ). however, thank you again for this useful hint :) about Telegram vs. Whatsapp: thanks for pointing out that having both installed is possible, so no need to actually make a 'decision'. the most important thing is that this thread is for sure not the right place to start a 'flame-war'. at first, I thought switching to a Telegram-version would be a good idea even if it only makes 5% of the current yappari-user (I'm aware this aren't the same which would roughly translate to 5 people, I suppose.. :D ) happy when (and this condition is important) the only other option would be having no yappari at all. but as there now exists a working Telegram-plugin for 'our' pidgin, I'd also say, a Whatsapp-implementation would be the only goal of real help/use/merit. cheers @all |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
I am one of the maybe very few people who is still having just a N900 so I depend on yappari. This is one reason why I'm thinking about to buy a new mobile, but I have no idea what would be a good replacement. I think in this form it is just unreplaceable. I hope ceene will be successful!

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
For folks that really need whatsapp the webapp might be useful?
https://www.whatsapp.com/faq/en/web/28080003 Unfortunately it seems like you still need Whatsapp on your phone to activate the account. I still have an Android phone somewhere in a drawer, will give it a try later. |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
yes t-b .. the webapp is basically useless
|
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
yep, that's the big 'downside' of this "web-app". it more or less works like a remote connection to your actual phone where your one and only 'true' instance of Whatsapp is installed at. it needs to be turned on with active internet connection for the web-app to work, fyi.
|
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Okay - if the phone app needs to be active and connected to the internet to be able to use the web app it is indeed basically useless.
I have the desktop app from Telegram installed and it is active all the time, with or without phone (you only need to enter an activation code received by a SMS text message to register). I even use it more than Telegram on my N900. I was hoping for something similar for Whatsapp. |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
The N900 doesn't have enough ram memory to use the WA web application. Iceweasel uses too much memory. I tried it a few times but it's very slow. One other alternatieve way to use WA on the N900 is dual booting NITdroid. I used it back at the time when there was no Yappari.
|
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
If you want reliable Whatsapp, I doubt the n900 will last the distance, however valiant the efforts: if not the next issue, then the one after that.... and so it will go.

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
I too have been thinking of another phone. Not easy to find another with open source but I would want something with 32gb or above and not too big, above 1gb RAM and maybe with linux but these days I have become lazy and not have much time to play around. I was thinking of HTC one M8, but seems larger and have not fully read about it just checked specs online. if you have an idea please share.

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
well, basically not much to choose from is left nowadays. iOS would be like the stark opposite of maemo. WP never had true value and is now deemed to rest in oblivion with the latest move done by Microsoft. sailfish, obviously, would be the closest choice as a maemo-successor; however, if you want to be more 'conform and compatible' to the 'mass', android isn't too bad either. most phones are capable to run an aosp-derivat. for what I know, cyanogen is entirely open source; the google-apps would be closed source but it is not mandatory to install them. for me, the true distinction to the 'rest of the world' has always been the neat keyboard and the resistive touchscreen. I'm afraid, nothing similar is available (why??). however, a small BT-keyboard may be able to provide some 'relieve'. (just my two cents regarding a follow-up phone)

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
I miss a working Yappari, but that has not caused me to start thinking about something else. N900 is more than a WhatsApp device to me.
Anyway, imho this talk about alternative OSes is OT in this thread. There's other subforums and threads for it. (when my N900 dies, and when I cannot find another, I'll probably move to Tizen, Jolla, or Android, depending on my financial situation at the time) |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
I know it's probably not a solution for most of you (maybe none of you), but I was thinking of going back to a dual boot Maemo/NITdroid setup just to check my WhatsApp messages a couple of time a day.
Of course it's not a great solution as I wouldn't be getting my messages live since I'd still be using Maemo most of the time. But it could be enough for me. So my question is, does anyone know if WhatsApp still works in NITDroid? Haven't used NITDroid for years. |

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Also keep in mind that Nitdroid lacks calling functionality as you will have to switch to Maemo to make a phone call which is a pain if you use N900 as a main phone.

Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
Hi guys, everyone
I am so very sorry to inform all of you that Yappari won't be back. I've been very lucky to meet several people who have helped me, letting me borrow their numbers to continue developing, even if that meant getting banned by Whatsapp. I'd like to specifically thank Sicelo, KotCzarny, bmxerv and others. The situation right now is that I can't continue development at all. Last number I got from bmxerv has lasted only two days without being banned. I don't know the reason for these bans, nor how do they detect that I'm not using the official client. Even if I knew this, I still haven't been able to implement Signal (previously called axolotl) protocol, which is behind the encryption system. Alternative implementations, such as https://github.com/tgalal/yowsup/ are suffering from the same kind of issues lately, with still no answer. So... this is it. I simply don't have the knowledge that is required to make this thing work, and to be honest, I even doubt that right now anyone has it at all. As of today, I simply think that it's unreasonable to keep asking friends for their numbers just to get them banned in a matter of hours for no real benefit at all, as testing is impossible with so little time. I also don't think it's reasonable to keep you guys from looking for an alternative just because you trust that Yappari is gonna work again soon. Sadly, that's not going to happen. Maybe, some time in the future, someone discovers what must be done in order to avoid these bans. If that happens, I assure you I'd be back to implement that into Yappari and try again to make it work with new encryption system, but that doesn't seem like something that is gonna happen soon. To be honest, In my opinion, that's simply not gonna happen either. As soon as 2016 ends, Whatsapp will stop supporting S40 phones, from which most of us are able to reverse engineer the protocol. After that, Whatsapp will be able to completely change its protocol without us being able to take the slightest peak at it. And I'm sure sure they will. So... that's it. I don't know what else to say nor how to lessen this loss for all of you. Just wanted to say that, like Sicelo said above, the N900 has always been much more than simply a Whatsapp device. It's still a great hacker's device, a great phone (yeah, simply it's sound quality is thousands of times ahead of any other smartphone I've used) and a great small full fledged computer. Even if I get myself a whatsapp compatible device, I won't stop using the N900 until it dies and I won't be leaving this great community until it fades away with last N900 that keeps working years from now. |
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
ceene, I understand. Don't worry. I'm so grateful for all your efforts. You will always have my respect and gratitude for your titanic efforts.
|
Re: [Announce] Yappari - New maintainership and new features!
ceene, Big Thanks for your effort! Yappari was great app as long it worked.
BTW I think so WhatsApp could recognize "wrong" phone model by the IMEI code. I don't know about WA protocol, but I think so I have seen the IMEI code in some official WhatsApp client's configuration menu. I don't either know if Yappari will send the IMEI code to WhatsApp server. Just guessing. :) |
