Abiword is okay, but my past experience is that it has a difficult time with large rtf files -- which is why I don't use it. I should see how openoffice performs under the chroot with importing large files. I do agree that a document viewer utility for reviewing (but not necessarily editing) different formatted attachments in email would be useful. |
Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
Ok I will check that out thanks
I found that asciidoc just recreation of the notes app with a few additions. You should try the new abiword it doesn't crash cronicly like previous versions. I recomend upgrading to Diablo first to save you self future problems. After you have upgraded, enable the Maemo extras catalogue then create the Maemo Extras-devel catalogue Title Maemo Extras-devel Web Address http://repository.maemo.org/extras-devel/ Distibution chinook ("diablo") may work but ive never tried it) Components free non-free If you recieve a measage when you try to install abiword first close the application manager and reopen it, then bring up the application catalogue and delete the "Maemo Extras-devel" and disable the "Maemo Extras" tap close and close the application manager. Reopen the the application manager again and enable "Maemo Extras" close the application catalogue and let it refresh the catalogue finally open the application catalogue and recreate the the "Maemo Extras-devel" repository. this will take longer to read than to do it for real. It is definately woth it. There are a few bugs that need fixing the sylus keyboard doesn't launch when you tap the document area to start editing the easiest way to get around this is to adjust the virtual keyboard before you start editing. Here is a simple run through of the operation: Open the notes application and tap the document area when the stylus keyboard pops up tap the options box on the lower left of the keyboard then tap tools then settings finaly uncheck launch finger keyboard with square thing. Then when you open abiword click the center of the dpad and the stylus keyboard will launch. There is a lot of effert going in to fixing any problems in it. |
Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
Does anyone know of any power point like application availible???
And if anyone is interested in creating one basing it off of the slide show to go app for palm pilots would be the easiest way to go. Adding back ground would be cool. Just remember I am not forcing anyone to pursue this idea |

Are you trying to create and read pp files? or do you just want a fancy slideshow program with annotation and transition effects? For the former, I'd say LOL since this thread started out asking if it is even practical to have a word processor on this tiny thing! I'm not saying it will never happen, but I doubt it is high on anyone's prioity. For the second, this sounds like a couple of great future plugins for Canola! |
Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
Power Point Programs and this is about the possibility that finally we may have a full office suit not just a good word processor. The reason that you may have thought that was because of the poll (I just wanted for people to understand what the majority of the people's thoughts were.)

Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
I was just wondering how presentation software would actually be used on a NIT.
Would you be creating/editing a presentation that would be played back from another computer (as such an export to *.ppt would likely be needed), or are you wanting actually present your presentation from the NIT (So *.ppt export is NOT needed). Or thirdly, do you just want a fancier slide-show viewer. Granted "full office suite" makes a great sales pitch, and may be worth it (to Nokia) on that point alone, I'm just wondering how/if it would be used? Note: there is another [long] thread on this forum about "what do you realistically want to see in an N900" where making a boardroom-like presentation from an NIT (using a special docking station) is being discussed. Is this the kind of use you envision? |
Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
Ok my first thought was for one to create or finish a pp presentation on the internt tablet. I know you can do it on small displays from experence. But a great idea would to give it networking to wirelessly send it to a web page that could be projected or displayed.
So you would walk into the room and connect to a wireless access point and select the network setting and it would show up on a website that could be proected from a projector connected to a laptop displaying thats displaying the website. Now if you followed all that you get the idea |

Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
what i do is save my ppt files to jpeg and just view them with quiver.
a proper viewer would be sweet. i think the hardware can even handle animations. right now the solutions are: word: abiword, xournal, notes (if you can live without paragraph marks) excel: gnumeric powerpoint: none, but you can save as a movie or series of jpegs |
Re: Mobile Office For OS 2008
The biggest viewer should be able to open ppt. After 20+ seconds that is :)
EDIT: Though i just tried a 33 page ppt file and OOo crashed... :) |
