FYI, I'm close to beta for my minigpsd and it will contain a python statusbar applet that shows GPS status (with satellites in position colored by signal strength) and pops up a menu to start/stop and change various settings. It might be a day or two, but this is a fuller application and demonstrates more things. It is GPLv3.
