Aha. I found it, in his own words (Feb 15 2008):

Quote:

Recently I have begun to disengage myself from this project by spending far less time reading and helping out on ITT (I haven't visited for over a week, and don't intend to any time soon) and the mailing lists.

I can't avoid the impression that this project is fatally holed below the waterline, and the continued lack of any significant involvement from Nokia/Maemo in Bugzilla only serves to reinforce this impression, along with the generally poor Maemo communication (ie. few if any blog posts or announcements of any kind whatsoever in the last 6 weeks) and the fact that most Maemo developers continue to have one hand tied behind their back thanks to Nokia corporate politics means there is no truly open discussion about anything of any worth - as soon as a technical subject gets interesting the Nokians clam up as they can't discuss certain topics.

This project demonstrates to me that Nokia simply can't "do" open source properly while still trying to maintain total control over the project along with elements of closed source code and undocumented functionality. Improvements have been promised time and time again yet the situation remains the same. Maemo still couldn't even produce a changelog for Chinook despite numerous suggestions that it would be made available, and nobody seems willing to discuss it.

Good luck to everyone who continues with this project but personally I think it's doomed, not through the fault of any individual but simply because of the oppressing corporate bureaucracy and the inability for anyone to change that. It could have been fun, instead it's a frustrating cluster f-ck.

And seeing that Ferenc has now left the project fills me with dread as he was the only guy who seemed to have a clue about the infra... :(

I'll respond to any Bugzilla emails I receive for the foreseeable future but that's going to be the extent of my involvement for now - like Nokia, I just can't be arsed.
That kind of post always makes me sad. Helpful, engaged members of the community suddenly burn out, like the recent rant-then-disappearance of Krisse (and I'm starting to think Brontide might have succumbed too (1) (2) (3).)

I wonder if I'll get all jaded and angry sometime in the near future, too?

hell, i have not been around as long as them but even i can sense the crossing interests of old corp and open source.

watch bug reports go "fixed in fremantle/WONTFIX" and not knowing if fremantle will be new hardware only do not help.

basically i loved the tablet idea from theday i read about the 770 in linux journal (i probably have it here somewhere) but if the pandora goes into proper production i may well call it quits.

to tired of nokias differnenciations. maybe this is what they fear those that want to be prepared for a government overthrow...

Well, that, and Nokia's poor handling of the project in general. He's not completely gone, anyway, he still pops into #maemo every once and a while and still fights the good fight on Bugzilla most of the time. ;)

It's sad that he doesn't come over here any more.

Yes, he's been seen on #maemo, but sadly, he's still saying the same things:

....my enthusiasm has been crushed under the weight of bureaucracy and finnish corporate politics.

Milhouse still comments in Maemo Bugzilla, but quite often with a grain of criticism towards Nokia, which I can understand after all these years.

The more you communicate your expectations to make Fremantle available for the N8x0s, the more might Nokia understand. If it really helps in the end is another question of course...

(And I hope people understand that the "WONTFIX for Diablo" are not my own decisions in fact.)

Andre we realize you're the messenger and don't deserve the bullet. ;)

Thanks for your efforts.

...and we're the community, over here in ITt. Reggie isn't even associated with Nokia in any way. So there should be no Finnish Corporate Politics over here. Just a bunch of opinionated users doin' stuff with our tablets. So come back, Milhouse!
