Aside from the fact that it is free, how is it different (or better) than Docs to Go?

From reading this thread I gathered that the first announcement was of a Koffice Reader. Then, it seemed that it was actually Reader/Writer. At the end it again seemed to be only a Reader.

Does anyone know if there any effort being put on making a Writer available? (something the could edit OpenOffice files)

Maybe an Abiword port?

As you see this is a Alpha release and work under progress. This is open source and provides a basis for new and open innovations in the space of mobile office applications. This supports a wider format support (Open Document Formats). MS Office formats are constantly being improved. KOffice itself will be ready for end user in the next release so one needs to have patience to see this feature support complete. This is free software

@soeiro: there is an abiword port in extras-devel, you can give it a try if you want, seems usable. downside is that it's not optified and takes some megs on the root fs.

Freoffice at the moment is first focused on getting good quality Viewers only.

There is already a solution. It involves using something called Easy Debian. You will have to temporarily enable Extras Devel in order to install it. (Yes, that is a dangerous area and you should disable it as soon as you are done installing Easy Debian, but Easy Debian is rather safe and it is optified.) Once installed several new shortcut icons will be available on the applications menu. You will need to first run the one called "Debian Image Installer". A terminal program will open and ask you where to place the image file (it is a 2 GB file), either on the N900's built in storage (under MyDocs), or on an external MicroSD card (if available). That will start the download and eventual extraction of the image file. Expect it to take more than an hour to complete. When it is all done, you will be able to launch a session of LXDE (a light weight desktop) whith several applications already installed in it, including OpenOffice.org. It works rather well, within the obvious limitations of the device. You can access the files on the device and edit them just fine. If you do try it, prepare to be blown away. ;)
