Re: Should I wait?

I want a perfect mix of phones with the following;

The iphones screen (with the N900's resolution and the N86's Oled screen) - I feel the N900 is lacking the anti-fingerprint coating on the iphone.
The N900's open sourced nature, and storage.
WinMo's version of TomTom GPS. Nothing else from Winmo.
The HTC Hero's trackball. The "swipe from the left to get a mouse arrow" on the N900 is fiddly.
The HTC TP2's keyboard. Or the N900's with one more row of keys.
Android's "synergy". Love the ability to merge social sites info into the contacts of the phone".
N900's integrated Skype, voip and Gtalk (with more), as well as having your contacts online status integrated into the contacts list.
The N97's (Yes I even want something from that as well) tilting screen form factor. Also the call / end call buttons.
Finally, I'd like the UI to be as smooth graphically as the iphone, as customisable as the S60 phones, as functional as the N900 and as funky as the "sense" overlay on the HTC devices.

D'you think Nokia could manage to squeeze all that in before launch? Heh.

My comments about the N900 were meant to help the original poster and anyone else who cared to see that there are different opinions about the phone application in the N900, including positive ones. That was in contrast to the very dismissive and unsubstantiated opinion of one poster, who claimed to have some sort of inside knowledge, while providing almost nothing to back this up. I provided several links to reviews that evaluated the N900 phone application (I really don't know how links to reviews about the N900 in direct response to a question about it's phone application is about emotions). We then had a debate about what information was more relevant.

You then chimed in with a nonsensical remark about how a phone is like cake, a remark which was clearly meant to provoke people. You followed up with an even more provocative remark. You seem to be the troll who wants to stir up emotions while pretending that you are somehow above it all. So if you get an emotional response back, pointing out that you are a troll with nothing substantive to say, it only proves that you are capable of generating negative emotions directed toward yourself. Why you would want that only you can know.

do things like this even matter when most people usually get a screen protector?

i mean, most iPhone screen protectors are "fingerprint magnets" so its really more a matter of the screen protector to be honest...

cb474 if you read my post you will have seen it was ended with a (:D). You will see that the reference to the cake was not a comparison of the phone , but a comparison to the type of decision being made i.e. a purchase is not just about features functions and specifications and a need to fulfill a task, and that there might be a significant element of emotion (joy, elation, adventure, loyalty etc) involved in the decision making.

Having your cake and eat it was meant to point out the fact that emotional decisions accept a significant element of compromise, and that's OK as well.

It's a shame that you saw it as a personal attack rather than an attempt to put some lightness into the thread.

On my servers, yes. But not on my N810, it doesn't.

Open Source has quickly evolved to a group of folks that seem to almost dislike it when you do not think like they do. Very "Cult of Mac" like...

I like VLC, got nearly mobbed when I wanted it to come out in a thread about suggested apps that should come out for the N900. It's coming out and now it seems like people are almost against it, seemingly disgusted.

I like options. I don't like MPlayer - anytime I have to resample my existing movies is an extra step or three that I do not wish to partake all the time. Does that make VLC perfect? Nope.

It's been quoted that I'm discounting the few reviews that are out there that are positive. I'll have to disagree. I'm discounting those reviews that are negative that are out there actually. The good ones, I know they exist; however good reviews also exist for worse products by those very same people. Praise for the iPhone, Storm 2, Omnia and other phones that I just do not like whatsoever. This community here... they're closer to what I'd consider a kindred kind of user; despite my differences in what I'd like to see.

The lack of tools like... a photo editor like Layers on the iPhone or Toy Camera [ product here ] on OS X, or AutoDesk SketchPad Pro (or mobile) for instance will never be an option. I've not seen anything about Inkscape (outside of Debian) or other types of stuff I'd like. It's not just about the phone for me. Flash 10.1 is forthcoming, MMS is forthcoming, portrait on the phone is forthcoming, video calling - forthcoming, 3rd party support from bigger companies... who knows, probably forthcoming.

So I have to wait. Wait to see if the N900 will be supported for more than a year. This hasn't been answered 100% yet - things do change. I have to wait to see if the phone gives me what I want.

So far, no phone is giving me what I want. Including the N900 for those above reasons.

Actually, I'm on the same boat as you. OpenSolaris and various linux distros for my servers. OSX on desktop\notebooks...

My point was that if plain opensource-ness already makes him giddy, then he'll be a Maemo\N900 apologist\fanboy anyway that he'll overlook all the shortcomings.

It's not the (wrong) concept, it's the (wrong) people... they're everywhere :p Fanaticism (usually) grows out of closed mindedness. Similar to prejudice...

I think it's just a matter of time for them to grow out of it.

You got the price that I think everyone is going to get in a few months - major kudos. There is always a premium paid at new releases, and in a competitive market like Nokia sells to, discounting should start pretty quickly. It's not like the iPhone where consumers are held captive by Apple's agreements with local carriers.

I'm going to give it a couple of months, let any major bugs discovered at the consumer level work themselves out, and maybe look at one around the start of 2010.
