Optified is exactly the right word for the meaning.

I agree that has nothing to do with "dropping support for icon cache." That's an issue with apt caching something on root, i would guess. It's not fixed in this little update. This update is mostly to make it possible to get the bigger upcoming update "over the air".

I am curious what it means by "dropping support for icon cache". Did they just do away with the icon cache entirely? Do i not need to update the cache in package postinst now, or is that rather a Finnish-ism that means "fixed support for icon cache."

This seems to be the case, since gtk-update-icon-cache does nothing now (it's an empty script).

I heard this fixes the ringtone bug; the ringtone now plays on the phone when a headset (wired/bluetooth) is connected.

It also fixes the bluetooth reconnection bug; reconnects to a bluetooth headset when it comes back in range.

I've yet to confirm these myself as I plan to update in a few hours when I have more time.

Hmmm, I read somewhere that it fixes those in this update. I'll confirm this when I've updated my firmware.

I know that many people touching linux for the first time do tend to think that "opt" derives from "optimal" or "optimized" but the word root is actually "optional" - where optional data is stored, so everything not needed to actually run the base OS.

so a compromise for you might be to call it "optinalized" instead of "optified" but I guess as the term "optified" is already somehow established in these forums and is also shorter it will stay :)

I know that it isn't a "proper" word and I'd never claim it to be :) I don't have a problem with word creations as we all know Germans are quite good with making up weird artificially constructed words ;)

This is really off topic, but that's an interesting move by the developers. Presumably an icon cache is used to improve performance. Why do you suppose it was removed? Not just because it was slightly cosmetically broken, i hope. :D

I suspect that the cache is used to prevent seeking to numerous places on disk (irrelevant for flash-based N900) and to prevent the need to resize icons for different purposes (probably not necessary on the N900). This would make the cache rather a waste of time and space on the N900.

I could be wrong though <shugs>.
