Re: The Mega Thread Of Almost-Certified N900 Apps that Work (or not) !!

i agree this isnt the best way to deal with this but
  • appwatch - works, not fully functional as yet
  • BlueMaemo - installed and ran okay, but didnt use app so cannot verify it works)
  • Desktop Command Execution Widget - latest version is now stable and you can have multiple widgets with different scripts shown
  • DOSBox - works okay, old DOS games work.. NFS 1 runs very poorly and slowly. games like duke nukem 1 (NOT 3d) will be about the best you will get to run..(?)
  • Duke Nuken 3D CD Version - works better than shareware version, though only useable if you own the original game)
  • midnight commander - great way to start transferring and editing files
  • msaber - runs, but when i used it it was very poor and didnt work
  • Powatool - couldnt live without this one. status menu is configurable (hide and show only), and you can toggle the nokia boot video to quicken device startup.
  • qtirreco - runs, havent tested functionality
  • usbcontrol - comes with maemo-pc connectivity - configure usb.......... works, can set usb network

Midori: slow as hell and it has a dependency for some library which makes it impossible to update to PR1.1
QtIrreco: Works OK. I am able to use it with both of my TVs.

which part from the words

you dont understand? you could do something better with your time that helps much more than updating application statuses here. and it will be useful to everybody, even those who doesn't want to touch testing...

I'm with ahmadka here.
- this is a quicker and friendlier overview imo. It's clear what it's about. With the Karma page I don't really know if a high karma just says something about stability, or also about user-friendliness, usefulness, and perhaps how many friends the author has on the forum (not saying that is the case, I just don't know). I suppose I could find out, but for that, see the start of this point.
- it is not double work per se to create more than one source of information. How many reviews of the N900 did you read before buying?
- this thread really was the first time I heard about this Karma page. And I've read a lot of posts on this forum before this one

Haha..
Karma. I just noticed this.

ok lets see
http://wiki.maemo.org/Karma
Has some technical info...jadajadjadjajda.

http://maemo.org/packages/repository...xtras-testing/
There i can see karma and when i look someones profile from community side of this webpage (not here) I can see karma
e.g http://maemo.org/profile/view/qgil/
http://maemo.org/profile/list/

NOW. I do not find link to list packages by karma. Actually OH shittery my head already hurts. What means that packages has karma? I suppose that karma what package has has nothing to do with developers own karma? When i go to download section there is no karma. And here is no karma: http://maemo.org/packages/repository...ng_free_armel/ even thought when i click package it shows karma.

Here is something about application karma (found with google)
http://wiki.maemo.org/Task:Karma_for_applications

Sorry again but this is half done right :| Where is same kind of listing what i see in my n900's app manager (with little description) and with possibility to sort it by different columns.

What I just did by searching is many many times over what average user would do.

Re: The Mega Thread Of Almost-Certified N900 Apps that Work (or not) !!

I understand that this thread might be helpful for end users who just want to use some apps and be sure they will not harm their device... in a short run. However, this is not helping devs and, in the long rung, this means less quality apps. Let me give you an example:

One user reported that Currency Converted crashes. Now the status is this on this thread:

Quote:

Currency Converter -- some crashes reported!
I tired to contact this user for further info, because if this is really the case, I would like to fix it as soon as possible. However, I haven't got any reply. There is no bug report, no further info about it. Instead there is this warning in the first post of this thread, which no doubt will only scare away potential testers. This will further hamper the effort to find out whether this is really the case and, if it is, how to fix it.

The intentions are good, but the results are not that optimal. :)

software needs karma in order to get to extras. 10 karma is needed. No, software doesn't get better karma by the author, the karma increases only from thumb up -votes.

and unreliable. as I said second ago: package needs 10 karma. one karma per one vote from people testing it. (should people who post raports here do the testing procedure too? it would bring the apps faster to extras). If package has for example 7 karma, one should find it 7 times more useful than one "review" here. because it means that 7 people think that the software is good. and those are probably valuated all the criteria so for example optification isn't a problem unlike could happend with these posts.....

bad metaphor, end of discussion.

yes, but that's why you should visit wiki too.

front page:
http://wiki.maemo.org/Main_Page

note the first title below power users. could it be "Help testing software"?

AppWatch is in extras-devel, which automatically means an as-is disclaimer :) When I feel it's ready/complete for end-users it will be promoted to testing.

I am perfectly aware that it is not (yet?) very reliable. It is clear from the first page. As I said, it's quicker and friendlier.

Brilliant debating!

I don't want to 'help testing software' (in this case at least), I want to know which software I want to install.
I did visit the wiki, but still didn't come across it.

I wouldn't say VGBA works perfectly. It is stable but the framerate and sound emulation make it an unenjoyable experience.
