I do find myself extremely useful to be able to boot Symbian on the N900, I don't know how has this thread going to that kind of discussion.

We are here because we love to do all kind of nerd thing with our N900, such as booting Ubuntu, Fedora, Meego, NeoPwn, Nitdroid,....

Why not Symbian?

Now, trying to return to the subject... has anyone tried to compile latest Symbian from sources?

Since Symbian doesnt use a Linux-ish way of booting, we have u-boot. Not a long time since it was released, but u-boot works. (At least boots)

since the n900 hardware is practically identical to new symbian 3 devices
i think this is the os we need for people who needs more apps and more smooth ui

There are things that Symbian does that my N900 doesn't do*.

An emu running in Maemo (for me) would be the best, because I would then have the best of both os's.

I'm not a developer or programmer or anything like that, more of an advanced end user...

* Music I have gotten "free" with older N series phones won't play because of DRM, if I had a Symbian emu then I should be able to.

DRM virtually always requires something that can't be easily supplied via an emulator, usually a hardware key or token. Basically, DRM is a source only of problems, and this is one of them ;)

Symbian will never happen on N900.

Official Meego (you know, with proper UI and apps and stuff) will never happen on N900.

In Nokias mind, the N900 does not exist.
