I used to have an app on N95 called 'Best Private Conversation' . It would hide all messages from a defined list of numbers behind a password. It would be great to have something like that again.

Maybe you should e addressing the problem of them taking your device without asking permission first or simple keep the device out of their reach?

... is there a way of disabling SMS notifications?

Something as simple as that would do me ... my friends aren't the type to go looking through personal conversations, but the way texts are currently displayed as pop-ups makes it hard to avoid reading them ... I really need to remember to switch my n900 into tablet mode next time I decide to show anyone just how amazing it is!

Re: [Maemo 5] Is there an app that will hide text messages from a person?

O, here's the real reason I'd like this:

I'm in a long relationship. Sometimes we fight, sometimes it's nice, you know. Like everyone else. Since conversations are all in a list, with last message preview, I can't open conversations with people peering over lest they see the last message received or sent.

People peek over my shoulder when I'm sending a message because they know that I sent a known message to a known person and don't feel the need for privacy. Also, people expect me to push "new message" or "up" or whatever and start afresh. They don't expect to see the list of last conversations.

Example of people that shouldn't mix:

* message exchange with doctor
(your rash is nothing odd, just an irritation from trousers)
* chat with mon/dad
(hey, good news, the rash is going away)
* coworkers (close)
(dude, my medical issue is all better!)
* coworkers (distant)
(I am sorry, I must decline, for medical reasons)
* Spouse/GF
(turns out it wasn't your fault)
* Relatives
(I can't believe she's dead)

I could go on. None of these people need to see other people's messages. Close coworkers have no business knowing about fights of sweet talk with GF, remote coworkers shouldn't know about my rash and frankly I have no intention of advertising family issues to anyone.

At the very least, there should be a Conversations (private) and a Conversations (Public) on desktop. Marked conversations go to a private folder.

You can't keep people from browsing the private folder, but there are two advantages to this:

a) Opening public doesn't insta-expose you

b) You can call bull on people opening folders marked as "Private". Most people stay away and if they don't I have no issue frowning and banning them from ever touching my device, ever, again. Blatant invasion of privacy is grounds for banishment. It's the difference between mistakenly barging over you in the bathroom and creaking the door open so they can peek.

Don't even get me started on emails with order confirmations.

I think it's relatively easy to implement - relative to marking messages as hidden and stuff.

Also, to those who need the info in a SMS: Copy, paste in a note, delete message. Secure storage. Hidden files. If you just need the info, it can be moved.

would be good if we could lock the sms/conversations with a pin code and disable text notifactions and just have the audible sound instead.
It is good but sometimes it can be annoying if your watching something as it jits the video playback because it tries to show the notication but it doesnt come through when playing video.
Hopefully that issue will be fixed and we will just have to wait for an app or something to hide/lock sms
