hello krk969,

thank you for your great work. honestly, i dont know exactly
how i should use it in the current state ...

i can input positive cash flows (budgets) and negative ones
(expenses). there are at least two methods to do so:

I) using categories for each budget/expense - i think this is
the default idea. i imported the following file:

Budget,salary,14-05-2010,01-01-2100,2000,1,Months,do not prorate,none
Budget,salary (wife),01-05-2010,01-01-2100,1000,1,Months,do not prorate,none
Expense,rental fee,01-05-2010,01-01-2100,500,1,Months,do not prorate,none
Expense,food,01-05-2010,01-01-2100,200,1,Months,do not prorate,none

1) in the expense tab i dont see a list of all expenses, i have to
choose explicity one. this is also the case in some result tabs.
it says expense categories but the categories from budget
also appear here.

2) budget tab: vice versa to 1)

3) report/usage tab:
a) for expenses the color red is used, for budget the color green which is a little bit misleading as the first two categories (food
and rental fee in teh above example) are also red and green.
b) i think its a bug as the amounts for the first month are doubled.

4) report/distribution graph: it would be nice to see the
percentages somewhere in the screen

can you try to import the above lines to see the problems
i have?

II) using the description field for each budget/expense
Budget,Budgets,14-05-2010,01-01-2100,2000,1,Months,do not prorate,salary
Budget,Budgets,01-05-2010,01-01-2100,1000,1,Months,do not prorate,salary (wife)
Expense,Expenses,01-05-2010,01-01-2100,500,1,Months,do not prorate,rental fee
Expense,Expenses,01-05-2010,01-01-2100,200,1,Months,do not prorate,food

1) expense tab: now i can see a complete list but the description
is missing.

i attached some files, the first ones correspond to I)

this is the right way to input.
An expense or budget is recorded against a category.

I noticed a minor niggle in the data, the recur period must be Month(s), Day(s), Week(s) or Year(s). Its mentioned on the website. Once you correct that everything will fall in place.

if you add a new category and assign an expense the category will automatically appear in the budget or vice versa.
This is natural since you will always have a budget for something you spend on. thats how Buddy works.
If you remove all expenses and all budgets for a category then the category will be deleted also.

the red and green are not for expense or budget.
as mentioned on the website, red means your budget has been exceeded and green means you have some budget left.
it represents deficit and surplus, and it goes by the percentage, you will notice all usages with 100% means your budget is used up.

unfortunately as you can see the screen real estate was very very limited, I did initially want to add percentages, but it was getting too cluttered and sometimes skewed the pie chart.
However Ill try to redesign it a bit.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Buddy - a budget and expense manager for maemo.

I cannot change the currency from GBP to €. Is this bug or can I fix it somehow? The settings of another date format were were saved.
Do you plan to add translations?
Thanks

it can be changed. After entering your currency code you need to hit enter and then the changes will reflect. Attached a screenshot.
that wasn't so obvious, I'll have that corrected or documented. thanks.

!

seems like you have old libraries.
you may need to upgrade.
try this command as root.

apt-get upgrade libqt4-maemo5*

that will upgrade all qt4.6 libs to the latest.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Buddy - a budget and expense manager for maemo.

@krk969> okay, month(s) did the job, thanx:-) i have to get
used to the approach of buddy. normally, i think of a single
sheet with positive/negative amounts per month and expect
somewhere the sum for all positive/negative values and one
for the overall sum.

Re: [ANNOUNCE] Buddy - a budget and expense manager for maemo.

Ive uploaded a minor revision of the app taking some feedback :
These are the changes you will find :
  • buddy user id is prepopulated in the website when you click GET KEY , to avoid a few errors while typing the user id manually.
  • User does not need to hit the enter key after typing a currency code* in the app settings.
  • User does not have to hold the Fn key anymore to enter an amount. The SpinBox can be used with +/- or if you want to manually enter an amount, hit enter and then type your amount without having to press the Fn key. If the . disappears, just hit enter and it will be displayed to enter fractional amounts.

* note : currency code is limited to max 2 characters, that should perhaps serve most currencies used. This is only a display item at the moment, the app does not do any currency conversions as of now.

What did you use to draw the graphs/diagrams? I'd like to include some of that into my apps as well :)
