N900 is a monster phone and Nokia is afraid of its own creation!!!
Had the maemo guys convinced HQ to release all closed source drivers, N900 would have been a serious threat to marketing/sales 101 = pay 500$ every 6-12 months for up to date phone.
I think that is the meaning of Engadget "threat".

Edit: forgot...I love this phone!

What IS interesting, IMO, is whether and when Meego to N900 will be more usable than NITroid to N900.

It is more like Meego/N900 vs NITroid/N900, than vs N9.

Right now, NITroid/N900 is alot more usable than Meego/N900.

NITroid will be a good baseline along with Maemo5 to the Meego developers.

Good Job, NITroid guys!

they already have 3d graphics acceleration.

Interesting, where'd they get the libraries for Android from?

The drivers that aren't open aren't theirs to open. The problem with Maemo is that parts of the OS and UI are still closed source, which only hinders people's ability to do things with it.

Most of the reason for it stopping responding for a while is due to the fact that it is running from an sd card and not the builtin memory

The higher the class sd card the better it will be

I for one am pleased we have a bunch of guys getting Android working on the n900, I have 2 n900's one is my main phone running meaego and the other I dont use with a sim and is effectively an Android Tablet :)
