Being a geek, I only care what it can do for me, not how many are walking the street. The only reason to care about that at all is if more walk the street then Nokia or someone else is more likely to make another device with similar hackability but more powerful hardware sometime down the road.

You don't need to sell tens of millions to reach that goal. A niche market of a 500K or a million can be pretty profitable especially if development costs are relatively low because of the use of open source.

My understanding is that Nokia sold quite a few more than they expected and consider the N900 a success. So hopefully that means there will be some follow on in the future.

That's fine, but not everybody is in the know or wants to be in the know about everything under the sun. Many of us have non-computer-related day jobs, and other interests beside computing. We just want something that works (I don't want closed stuff from Apple though) or requires minimal tweaking. Why can't Nokia offer a simple copy-paste solution? Do you think consumers would embrace this device that only computer geeks can love? (Judging from the fact that they had to dump the remaining N900, I guess not.)

But I am sure you don't want to give yourself pain all the time, do you? You also want to see your devices being improved all the time, no? Without demand from users, there will be no real progress.

Your cluelessness doesn't really deserve a response, but I'm tired of reading your ignorant posts. So, I'll give one answer in the hope that you'll think before you type again in this thread.

Does microb on your n810 have double-tap or swirl zooming? No. Well, microb on the n900 does, thus, someone decided a special mode was needed for copying. And so they introduced the left side swipe.

It took Apple two years to bring copying to the iPhone browser; they chose to use tap-and-hold to invoke a popup menu. If you're not in fullscreen, copying text with microb is faster than it is on an iPhone. Suck it.

I don't have pain all the time. I actually have very few complaints about the N900. If I did have a lot of complaints I'd get something else. I'm not locked into a contract or anything. But then, I had an N800 before and apparently unlike many I bought the 900 on the basis of improvements over that rather than on my imagining of what it "ought to do".

Yes, improvements are good. Without a certain level of sales there will be no improvement. Input from users can provide guidance as to what should be improved. None of that has anything to do with hype or whining about things never promised or dick-measuring relative to some other device.

i don't consider myself to be very tech savvy or it knowledgable, but that being said. I absolutely ADORE my n900, ;P I've only ever needed the basic telephony functions the n900 has ( extra functionality would be great, but not really necessary for me ) but the range of actual USEFUL apps suits my every need, and has gotten me interested in things i wouldn't have thought of doing on my phone before. Web/internet conenctivity ( like browsing,im, rss, blah blah blah etc ) functions are awesome. I agree that the phone needs a little self tweaking out of the box, but that just means i have a highly unique experience with my phone, and no other n900 out there looks exactly like it ( ui wise i mean )
Sure some research and reading is required to perform these tweaks/adjustments, but if someone like me can do it, then the only excuse a 'normal' user has for saying that it requires too much work/ is not user friendly i can think of is that they're lazy or they just don't care about extra functionality.

I do recall trying the swirl thing when I first got my N900, but decided that I didn't like the feature, so promptly forgot about it. I am sure many N810 users would expect a simple tap and hold, just like me. If you want to call that ignorant, so be it.

I'm almost embarrassed to say this but the swirl zoom has never worked for me and I've never seen a setting to enable it...
