I don't really disagree at all, but...

He didn't exactly say "cell-phone sized" -- if he's cool with a bit bigger, and doesn't want phone functionality built-in (particularly since it's T-mobile only for 3G in the USA), the Open Pandora's certainly a worthy choice.

To me, those are the only two viable pocketable UNIX options at present, but there's no general merit of one over the other -- it's all a question of which form-factor and connectivity choices suit.

That's a slippery slope and a troll would just run with that. For what it is worth, I've all but replaced my N900 with my custom firmware and recently (and rapidly) updated apps on my Android phone.

Only forward facing camera using Skype video calls is the one thing lacking really. The integrated IM treatment was great too, but I can run Nimbuzz all day in the background.

I also don't miss the fact that I don't have to worry about Flash 10.1 any longer. I still have a terminal, SSH... I've deployed files from my sd card to my servers, I've edited files via QuickOffice without really losing my interface or installing EasyDebian.

I've not had to deal with rootfs issues, RAM issues, nor a phone call coming in and risking the rotation issue. I've overclocked my phone to 1280mhz, I have 338mb of RAM allocated for my use and so far, I've found a couple of drawing programs that work very well with my oStylus, a capacitive stylus.

My transition to Android has been pretty effortless and I don't miss much of what the N900 does... and doesn't do.

Browsing isn't the same though. I'll admit that. But I can't say that I miss my N900 wholly.

Especially since it never gave me 3G speeds.

I've bought mine only 3 months ago and I still think it was (and is) worth the money. On the other hand I miss some apps like an easy-to-use location based reminder program. Plus I'd like to have a bigger software choice.

But right now there isn't any single phone on the market that I'd call a true alternative for me, and I know this won't change that fast - even with all the shiny dual-core mobiles waiting to be released. In the last 3 months I've become used to the possibility of being able to fit nearly everything to my needs. And thanks to the community at least important fixes and improvements should be released for a while.

My story with the N900 is a story of love and hate, but the love is still stronger than the hate :) I'd clearly recommend it if you are aware of the fact, that there is much to discover, but of course with limitations...

Though I've sworn to not buy another Nokia phone in the future, I'd make an exception for a replacement N900 if mine suddenly died...

EDIT: in short this means: BUY IT !! :D

Android is where all the geek stuff is happening, maemo/meego does not get anywhere near some of geek android software, this also includes commercial software vendors producing decent apps, hardware wise no phone out is currently comparable with the n900, only the lg optimus X2 and motorola atriz maybe superior devices in some areas but inferior in other areas.

Ok, yeah, I admit the Open Pandora is a very cool little device. But the focus on being a gaming platform kind of throws me off; I don't use my N900 for gaming at all... (Besides, is it even possible to get one? It sounds like they are only being manufactured in tiny batches.)

I'd love to see a more general-purpose version of the Open Pandora, maybe something more like the N810. :)

Bought one 2 weeks ago. Despite all the bugs & limitations, it's worth it. Massively powerful. I doubt we'll ever see such a phone again... Maybe the N9. Wait for a few days to see if it's announced...

iOS/Android/WP7/WebOS - apps platform.
Maemo - computing platform.
