Even the oh-so-supported iphone get 1 major update after one year, and part of a second one after two. Cannot tell for you, but most people don't buy devices for what they will do in 2 years time (in that case it's just much cheaper to buy 2 years old devices). If the N9 lacks "must have" features for you at 3 months after launch, DONT BUY IT. If it doesn't, buy it if you like it AS IT IS. |

the old molly may still have more juice in her then, e.g., the crappy barge it has to howl, now. iPotatos may be popular for those who can afford it or the not quite so cheap plans that usually come w/ it, but for those who have to pay for a "smart phone", Symbian devices may turn out to be the only alternative, if Android gets derailed (either by m$ or by Oracle with the Java licensing claims or both). Clearly, Nokia had to do something to switch away from Maemo. Otherwise, following the trend line, they would have been required to release the N900's successor with no OS at all. |
Re: Unexpected cool features on n950
Agree with erendorn. Before the N900, I had the HTC Hero. Well, I was still waiting for that hallowed 1.6 update by the time that Google had released 2.1 (I think). Unless you have a Nexus, an android device has a software life cycle of about a year, a year and a half tops. You might be able to extend this with cooked roms... if the device has an open bootloader.
On the other hand, there is software continuity, and guaranteed compatibility with other android handsets. You can buy another, more modern android device when your current one gets a bit creaky, and purchased software will just run. That is a huge leg up compared to Maemo, with its quirky (to put it gently) history regarding compatibility between different versions. I hope that the API compatibility with Meego proper, the rpm packaging and Qt will alleviate the dearth of applications. It is a big bummer to me that this is maemo harmattan and not real meego. I consider that its biggest flaw, and the only thing that makes me have second thoughts about buying the phone. The fact remains, though, that it appears to be a very competent OS and won't need many apps to plug feature holes of the OS itself. Out of the box, it supports office, IM'ing, has an excellent map application, a very good browser with more alternatives to come, and an e-mail app that works for a change. It does 95% of what I NEED a phone/pda to do as is. For the missing 5%, I'm willing to wait for the appz of find workarounds. And, when it comes to what I WANT to do with a phone/ pda/ pocket computer, which is to mess with it... well, it IS open source. |

You can only do it if you know where the keys are situated. Are you sure that this is an issue? And btw: all so called smartphones that only have a screen have this issue: you won't be able to dial blind.;) |
