Yeah, sure. Last time I came home through CDG with only an hour between planes, and 45 minutes of that was eaten up by the furor over an abandoned bag on the mezzanine... ;)

Yeah, I'm quite proud of that one... they blew it up only to find it was filled to the brim with Portuguese "bacalau" and the hall stank for days after that :-)

(seriously, it *did* happen once in Orly as I was coming back from Madeira...)

Any chance of native A2DP/AVRCP yet? (asks without much hope)

Got my hopes up again :-(
I noticed that the repo's seem knackered atm for maemo, and was hoping something was happening!
Looks like it isn't....

The N810W seems to be coming in early July, so it'll be on or maybe a little after then that we get it (perhaps we'll get another early release of the firmware like we did with Chinook, though).

Agreed. The Q2 deadline missed, slightly, it appears.

You mean for N810WE, or Diablo?

I'm pretty sure at least one of them will meet the Q2 release date... ;)

Well, online retailers are saying 9th July for N810W. It seems unlikely to get a final Diablo release before the N810W is for sale. I'd be pleasantly surprised to get any Diablo release before the N810W is for sale.

So, either you're wrong, the online retailers are wrong, or the supposition about the synergy of the Diablo/N810W release dates are wrong.

Dug out the original press release:

Quote:

owners of Nokia N810 and N800 Internet Tablets with earlier operating systems will be able to upgrade their device to the revised operating system for free during the second quarter of 2008.
So, if I can't update my N810 to Diablo before CoB 30th June 2008, the Q2 deadline is missed :-)

Benson 2008-05-02 16:14

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

β, maybe? As close as the N810 and N810WE are, there shouldn't be any big surprises; it's been in closed β a while, so a public β for N810s, at least, looks quite reasonable for Q2.

Jaffa 2008-05-02 16:20

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

If I was being grumpy, I'd say a public beta doesn't really count as a release.

That's what they did with the OS2008 release, though, in response to developers saying "hang on, we want to test our apps on the devices we've got [N800] before the new device and OS come out".

Benson 2008-05-02 16:31

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

Which is really sane, though there should be much less need now. I'm envisioning it as a possible way of keeping their Q2 commitment without finalizing the N810WE's factory firmware.

brontide 2008-05-02 16:33

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

As far as I see os2008 is already a public beta, and releasing Diablo with the current version of Modest would be a huge mistake.

Benson 2008-05-02 16:39

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

OK, but there's almost 2 months left before the end of Q2, so one wouldn't expect the current version of Modest to be current then.

(I'd say, by the way, that it's not a beta if it's shipping on production devices. At that point, if it's bad, it's just bad.)

Hey! I trademarked that schtick. :p You owe me... hmm, what do you guys have lying around over in Building 4? :D

As for Diablo... well, I'm officially testing certain builds now, so let the bribes begin! ;)

Wreckage from an alien craft which crashed in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947, perhaps?

On the one hand, it's promising that it's progressing; on the other, it's disappointing that Nokia still keep so many cards so close to its chest, when there are legions of people who have the skills and inclination to do careful testing in exchange for early access. (I'd like to advocate a public beta, but we know how well that goes with inexperienced people trying things they shouldn't, and ill-advised people repeating things they don't understand)

The backlash from idiots with a poor understanding of the term 'beta' is a force to be reckoned with. ;)

Benson 2008-05-02 19:08

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

Here's a prime example.

In all fairness, this doesn't say beta, but it says:
Quote:

This is really in testing phase, and I think the bugs are all out, but I want to have a few people test on other cards.
Testing phase, think all the bugs are out... if you're not Google, that means the same thing...

It's sad.

What we don't know is if the problems with Modest are caused by the fact is running on Chinook that has a built in mail client already.

Meh, I think you are all missing the point.

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

I'd like to add to the slating that Modest seems to get, imho I'd agree with theflew, I've been using modest since it was released. The problems I have are that I don't know whether i'm using modest or the internal client, and sometimes it conflicts. (although recently that doesn't seem to be the case)
Also given the difference between modest and the current email client, I can't see why it gets such bad press.

As much as I respect your posts you have it all wrong -
It is not whether it will wash -
The important thing is will it fold after it washes.
I want a folder in my pocket!!

While F@H is great, please also consider donating some of your computer time to Rosetta@Home The University of Washington's (my school) protein folding program. Also keep a look out for a new "game" from the Baker lab that will allow young and old to interactively fold proteins (starting out with simple peptide chains, of course) . My biochem TA is doing her PhD research in the Baker lab :D Proteins are sooooo beautiful!

P.S. Go DAWGS! :p

Done.

I didn't realize that this was a BONIC project also. I thought it went the Folding@home route with a separate scheme and I didn't want to run both.

The aliens can wait a bit longer to be found :]
Maybe it will still happen before Diablo is released anyways ...

Re: What do we know about Diablo (Maemo 4.1) ?

Well, folks, it seems that diablo it's just a minor update with nothing really substantial in it,
quoting from a message on the maemo-developers list

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp....mo.devel/15389

Quote:

Diablo is not a new OS. Most applications haven't changed
significantly**
According to the marketing material it's "Internet Tablet OS: maemo
Linux based OS 2008 feature upgrade"

The only major changes are feature updates to the browser (not actually
a new browser, it's still based on the same old gecko as 2008), a new
mail client, and the ssl change to support WiMax.

from an earlier message it isn't even clear if the transition from diablo to the (eventual) successor will be possible via apt-get/application manager:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp....mo.devel/15374

Quote:

Quote:

Does someone work on "apt-get update;apt-get upgrade" from Chinook to
Diablo then?
No, unfortunately not. We are working to get apt-get upgrade working
for releases that come after Diablo.

From the ubuntu mobile faq (emphasis mine):

Quote:

Can I run it on a Nokia N770/N800?

As stated above, our current focus in in x86 processors. It should run on ARM if somebody ports it, but the Nokia devices have proprietary parts so the port will be, at the best, incomplete. My take on that is, at least for now, if you have a Nokia N770 or N800, stick with Nokia's software.

I think we've by now all become accustomed to Nokia's practice of promising the sky and delivering the sewer. It's sad really, but I can't even get myself worked up over it anymore...
