Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Garnet still sucks. It STILL does not run the apps I use on my regular palm like Trip Deluxe and just crashes when I try to run it.
So, i'm still stuck carrying my N800 as well as my Palm device. Stupid Nokia for not including a working PIM with the N800/N810. Yes I know it is an "Internet Tablet" but they could have made it so much more by adding a PIM and Office functionality to it. But, at least adding a PIM to it. A simple PIM shouldn't take THAT much memory. I mean look at the Palm devices like the Palm 3 or V. It was a PIM that ran well AND only 2/4MB of memory for apps. The later models had 8MB memory and ran even better and with a color display. Anyways, Garnet still sucks. I still have yet to find any of the handful of apps/games which I use all the time on my palm that will run without crashing on Garnet. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
thing is that just about every nokia phone comes with pim functionality. same with other phone brands (dont know about the ones that are sold with operator firmwares tho as i stay well away from those). so for nokia to put pim in both their tablet and their phone (they are more or less designed to be companion devices) would be a waste of resources in their opinion.
and there are pim software available from third party, and quite easy to install to imo. |

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
IMHO, the main problem with using GVM for calendar and todo apps is a lack of functioning reliable alarms.

What they COULD do is have an improved one on the tablet that could sync over bluetooth to the phone so they are actually "companion" devices and not just "estranged cousin" devices. I would much more enjoy being able to enter events on the tablet, and I like having the option of a silent alarm on the phone. Right now they don't work together at all - I don't see any advantage to getting a Nokia phone over a competitor's offering, as far as synergy is concerned. I do like my 6275i though, I wish it melded better with the n800. Quote:
For more advanced features, I'd absolutely love icons for appointments and subtasks. And big finger-size checkboxes. We have some catching up to do to get to the basic Palm level. We have the hardware potential to blow way past but I think we need serious buy-in from Nokia to approach that. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
That's an excellent point regarding making a PIM that syncs nicely with the PIM in your Nokia phone. OTOH, though... think about the backlash about that kind of vendor lock-in?
I'm not saying it'd be bad, but there would be people getting frosted about having a PIM that doesn't have full functionality with whatever phone they use. I'm still not persuaded that they necessarily come out ahead that way, but it's certainly more likely than if they make a generic standalone PIM with no Nokia-phone integration... |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Well look at it now, the tablet comes with NO PIM, expecting you to have a good one on the phone. I had an older Samsung with a rotten PIM before, and wasn't frosted.
Here's an easy solution. Sync both to a Nokia phone by bluetooth and to an online web calendar. For other phone users, tell them they can visit the online calendar via phone browser or put the burden of downloading and syncing to the other handset manufacturer. Instead of telling their own customers (tablet users) to suffer and use the online version they could tell other non-users to do so. Cater to their customers and make owning a tablet a preferable solution. Major bonus points for making the online calendar open source and possible to host anywhere. Make "MobileMe" obsolete before it's even released! :) |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
i wonder what happened to whoever it was that was working on getting opensync going on the tablets...

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
The NIT isn't even in the same league as Palm for PIMs. There are tons of Palm apps that are very useful, even essential, on a handheld device. OTOH, no Palm is in the same league as an NIT for web browsing. Web browsing is the only thing the NIT does well, and it's entirely a software problem. I too am stuck carrying a Palm, and rarely even bother with my N800 because my EeePC does everything else much better. Until a real, robust, and syncable PIM suite is available, the NIT is just a toy.

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Hi all;
While I agree that Garnet VM is not a replacement for power-Palm users and needs improvement, it does most of everything I need: * I mostly used the Contacts and Memos. Because the Palm puts everything into an internal DB, not files, the "search" function pops you right into the line in the memo you are looking for. That one Palm app is essential to me, and having it on my Nokia instantly improved my productivity. * I do use the Calendar and to-do a lot, but don't reply on either for alarms. For appointment alarms, I've been using the corporate calendar/email to send a text message to my phone - a small, light, super-reliable Samsung r500 with extended battery that lasts me about 1 week between charges. Lack of sound is not a big problem for me, and on my old Zire I would not always hear the alarms. * The handwriting recognition works as fast as it does on the real Palm. I've been using Jot for so long I can write almost as fast as I can actually print with a pencil - far faster than I can type on the horrible n810 keyboard. * My few custom apps - ip calc, etc. - ported over fine http://www.panoramio.com/photos/original/11295553.jpg Before I installed Garnet my n810 was mostly a surf toy combined with a very nice way to ssh and vnc to my servers. Now it is all that plus I have my PIM back! Hooray! Steve |

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
That did the trick. Thanks!. I had some problems including having all the applications disappear and I had to reinstall them, but they do work now. The message is pretty cryptic. I gather then that I can't back up the applications I've added?

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Hello,
Is there any way to set up external memory in the latest Garnet VM? I would like to play this game with sound: http://www.rzanerutledge.com/edge/information.html Unfortunately the sound files are ogg files that need to be on an external memory card. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Short answer: No. I think the feature is on Access' list for the next release, but it's better to check their FAQ directly. It's certainly a much wished-for feature.

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
I guarranty that when they implement the card feature Garnet VM will no longer be free. They got to pay the bills some how...

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
If it actually worked properly it would be worth something.

I would also consider paying for this feature. This is the missing feature that prevents me from using the VM as a real tool. I also like the ability to use more than 64MB(say as large as 4GB) for heap storage:-) |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Version 2beta performs very well and provides a reliable installation of jfile database version 5. As I was unable to find a quick application for converting csv files into databases, I was very pleased with the results and the display of both new versions. Bouquets all around. J2u

Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Anyone have any idea or info about what will be next for the Garnet VM, as this beta is supposed to expire at the end of this month?
Edit: Guess I posted a few days too early since Beta 3 is out now. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Hi--how do you create more than one GVM installation on your machine?
Quote:
I still can't get my device to sync to my Mac via Missing Sync, but I've gotten some ideas from several forum members and now know how to manually enter a Hotsync ID and Device ID for the Garnet VM. However, it looks like I'll have to reflash my GVM again unless I can find out how to just create new GVM's. Like burmashave, I'll probably need at least four installations! |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Could someone please tell me what OS Version this is equivalent to in terms of a Palm OS?
Like I have something that requires a "Minimum OS Version: 3.0". Will this work? Thanks! |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
As far as I understand, the Garnet VM emulates Palm OS 5.x, so your program that requires Palm OS 3.0 minimum should have no problem.
If you wish, in the configuration dialogue, you can choose a device model for each installed Palm app--you have your choice of: 1. Treo 650 2. Tungsten T3 3. Tungsten T5 4. Palm T|X 5. Custom For the Custom choice, you get to input a Company ID and Device ID. Here is a link to a table where I think you can find the right codes. http://homepage.mac.com/alvinmok/palm/codenames.html As far as I can tell, you only need to specify the Device Model IF your application has trouble launching. Otherwise, choosing "default" for the Device Model should be fine. All of the other choices (other than Custom) are Palm OS 5.x devices. As an aside: Changing the Device Model with the configuration dialogue will NOT change the Device ID that your computer sees during a Hotsync. There are other posts on this forum for manually changing that information in the gvm.store using Terminal. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Well, I've found the answer to my previous post about how to create multiple GVM installations on the NIT--I just needed to try using the forum tools a bit more extensively.
I found burmashave's instructions (Thanks, burmashave!) here: http://www.internettablettalk.com/fo...d.php?p=135714 What I don't yet understand is where all the code is supposed to go. As a newbie, I presume I should input this all into Terminal, but I also wonder about how to create Scripts (for repeated commands). I haven't found out the instructions for doing this in the Maemo Wiki. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Thanks for the response, Palmleavr!
I'm going to try and spend as much time this weekend installing all of the awesome medical junk bunanson has posted about in his many threads. I still have yet to figure out how to hot sync but I'm feeling a little lucky this time around. Cheers. :) |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Addison,
These are my quick instructions for hot sync: HOTSYNC NAME To install (and continue to use) any paid for application under GVM, the HotSync name must be established in GVM. Name: yourname SETTING HOTSYNC NAME If the hotsync name needs to be set, we need to sync one time with the Palm Desktop app in Windows: 1. Open Palm Desktop in Windows 2. Select Hotsysnc/Custom dropdown menu 3. Edit every line that does not say ‘Do Nothing’ to ‘do nothing‘ except rtime.dll which is left as desktop overwrites handheld. 4. Open GVM on N810 5. Select HotSync button near bottom right corner 6. Enter (or confirm) I.P. address as xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx 7. Start HotSync 8. When complete, confirm HotSync name as follows. CONFIRMING HOTSYNC NAME I use aClock, open it and go to Options/Register … You should see HotSync Name: yourname In any case, you should be able to go on frome here to install whatever you need. |
Re: Access Releases Garnet VM Beta 2
Thanks for the response, dfinch!
Because of your post I made it all the way through step one without a hitch! *lol* Okay, with step 2. I'm not seeing "Hotsysnc/Custom drop down menu". However, there is a "Launch Hotsync Manager" to click. Step 2.5 should be to click on "Show details", I think. Right about now I'm already half way lost. Step 3 makes me feel like I'm on the wrong journey here. There's no rtime.dll anywhere. http://img18.imageshack.us/img18/9811/85815231.jpg Now, I can Hotsync, and it says if it worked or I get an error of some kind. If it did work though it doesn't show the icon, so I click out of Garnet VM and restart and I see it installed. Well, then I click to launch it and I get errors and the launch icon disappears like with the "5 minute clinical diagnosis" bunason suggested. Most of the time, like with trying to install Merck Medical Manual, it says that it installed correctly but I never see anything on screen. What's most frustrating is all of this junk that I have yet to see work keeps piling on top of each other. I've tried removing them from the "Install Tool", even went as far as deleting them from my computer desktop, but every time I Hotsync now, I get this world of crud, that never works, constantly downloading on the tablet and oh dear lord I am too stupid to live! I even went so far as to delete Palm Desktop and Garnet VM, reinstalled, only to face the horror that it somehow remembered me and still wants to keep trying to install that excessive crud that I can't shake off. I'm honestly beginning to think that this is too far beyond me to ever understand. Anyway, thanks again for the post dfinch, it proved worthless! *lol* Cheers! |
