Re: New members say hello !
I just signed up last night... currently have an iPhone 3GS on at&t but preordered the N900 in anticipation of a switch back to T-Mobile. I've just hit a wall with the closed-platform nature of the iPhone. Looking forward to developing/port apps to Maemo

Re: New members say hello !
Hi guys!
I still use an N82 and waited quite a bit for a worthy successor. The Iphone does some things really great but since the majority of people don't care for multitasking, openness or high resolution, apple does neither. Android seems way cooler in most respects but I won't wait another year for an Android device with decent specs. Now along comes Nokia, finally abandoning their Symbian-only phones stubornness. It's still unclear to me whether or not the N900 will feature an electronic compass which is mandatory for augmented reality. I guess AR will become a bigger topic in the near future - at least for wow-effect if not for practical value. Obviously a bunch of other potential buyers are anxiously awaiting an official confirmation. I could live without capacitive display and fm-receiving functionality and hope for prosperous application development/adaptation from linux but I could not justify shelling out 600 euros knowing that AR won't happen on the N900. Cool forum, anyway! If i finally opt for the N900 and if studying computer science (which I just enrolled in) will help me with the geekier possibilites the device offers, I look forward to spend some time in this forum. |

Hello!
I am interested in joining the Maemo community, but there are some confusions holding me back. I don't want to cross post, so here's the link to the post I made earlier http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php...0&goto=newpost In any case, looking forward to more action! |
Re: New members say hello !
Hi. I'm Hook from Brighthand. Former Palm user, now with a Nokia 5800 and am quite interested in the N900. I'm not sure what time frame my budget will let me get one, so I figured I'd start lurking over here and learn as much as I can in the meantime. I'm in no hurry. I love my 5800.
I'm PDA/pocket computer centric in my approach. My 5800 has a gophone SIM in it and for $5 a month i can use 3G if I need it, but I rarely do (maybe 1-2 Mb a month), the rest is wifi. So I will be mostly quiet at first while I pick things up and will hold off posting questions until I understand enough to know what to ask. Cheers to you all. |

Re: New members say hello !
Hi guys,
I've registered today. I'm french too "bonjour le monde" (sorry for my english mistakes :p ). I've got a N800 looking forward for buying a N810. I've got my N800 for about 2 years may be. I've lost interest in it (went back to a plam lifedrive <3) untill recently when I learnt how to reduce battery consumption (thanks to this forum). For now I'm tweaking it to make it the best personnal geek assistant :). So that it. |
Re: New members say hello !
Well, not my first post here, but hello anyways =)
I, too, have an N82 and I love it, but I guess the time has come to say goodbye. Already drooling for the Rover. Now, the only thing you can expect me to contribute to the community is constant whining about f***ed up features, but at leat I 'll try to make it as constructive as possible :p |
Re: New members say hello !
Hey. I've been here a short while, but I'm Chris McFann, aka christexaport, Senior Editor at Symbian Freak. I love mobiles, and am interested in the Maemo 5 software ecosystem. I've never had a NIT, but look forward to my first this fall.

Re: New members say hello !
Hi everyone.
I've signed up due to my interest in the N900. I have been looking for a new phone for a while, and the N900 seems just what I've always wanted. I'm a heavy Ubuntu/Debian user, so hopefully will find it easy to tinker with as well. As Nokia in Australia don't have an online store, I've pre-ordered the N900 in the UK, and am getting it sent on to me! |

Mattaustin, glad to meet you. I'm new to Linux, so I hope you can share your knowledge and make this easier for me. I'm getting a Ubuntu lappy soon as well.

Re: New members say hello !
Hello, all, my name is Rob and I'm from the Boston, MA, USA area. I had been convinced that Android was my future (once some decent hardware emerged) but then along came the N900. I'm a 770 and n810 owner. The 770 has been retired to programmable-remote duty (via custom webserver/Tira2 IR transceiver/Insteon devices) but the n810 is still used in larger capacity. I'm a long-time programmer, mostly in the Win32 realm, and I'm particularly interested in automation. Since I've joined this site while doing research on the N900 I've expanded my use of the n810 but that's resulted in, suddenly, abysmal battery life (the vampire has visited me as well, it seems). I'll leave that discussion for the appropriate thread.
Anyway, my intent is to learn me some QT and get involved in development for the n900. I haven't pre-ordered mine yet, although I'm on the verge of doing so at Amazon. I live in iPhone hell over here and I'll be psyched to be sporting a great alternative. |
Re: New members say hello !
Hiya all! My name is Keijo and I'm a newly converted maemo fanatic. I guess the biggest reason is that I actually use a N900 now and realized that 'I'm never going back' to symbian or anything else for that matter...
I'm willing to help out with development (testing, trying out progs on the device etc) although I'm afraid I'm pretty clueless regarding linux and programming for maemo (but I intend to learn...already got the sdk running in a virtual image at home...:) ) //K |
Re: New members say hello !
Hi. My name is Kyle, and I too am one of the N900 followers. I think it is the first phone I have ever really wanted. I am a n95 owner, and passed on the iphone due to its restrictions.
Let's see... I have some basic programming skills, and I would love to help out where I can. Maemo seems like a platform I should have known more about. I am ok with Ubuntu, I've been using it off and on over the past few years, and it is starting to make more sense to me. Anyway... Hi everbody! And I look forward to conversing with many of you. Regards |
Re: New members say hello !
Hi there.
My interest in Maemo began a couple a months ago when I had to write a document comparing the several mobile platforms that are available. Of all of those that I reviewed, Maemo was the one I liked the most. Besides, I have been wanting to buy a new mobile phone for some time, as my N95 8GB, as much as I love it, is getting a bit old. Therefore, when Nokia announced the N900, I knew that was the phone I was going to buy and registered here. I work in the R&D department of a quite big IT company and we are investigating quite a lot about mobile services for mass transit users. I would love to see such services running on my N900. Ah, if it only had a magnetometer and J2ME support... Kind regards. |
Re: New members say hello !
I have been a lurker for some time now, but thought it was time to introduce myself properly.
My name is Bas. My main reason for being on the forum is my interest in the N900. I was already interested in the N810 some time ago, but as I am not into two device solutions, I went with a smartphone instead. The N900 has rekindled my interest in Maemo. My recent history in smartphones is the Nokia 9500 Communicator and Nokia E71. I hope to be the proud owner of an N900 in less than a month, as I have already preordered one. I particularly like the raw power, multimedia aspects, custimaisable desktop, dashboard, browser and openness of the device. |
Re: New members say hello !
have played with so many phones/tablets, some say I'm a fanatic so I should fit in here right?
well, i'm jay. I think the community-you all-are great and how linux is so powerful because of you, I am so used to think take...take...take from devices and OS's it'll take some time till I can give back. In the meantime Thanks to everyone for sharing your expertise and making Maemo awesome for everyone else to use. |

Hello!
I'm Pavlo Zahozhenko aka buru, a software developer and young scientist from Ukraine. I work on Comindwork startup and I'm interested in all things web, mobile and next generation communication and collaboration platforms. I also happen to teach mobile application development course in the local university (National University of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy); the course is dedicated to app development for J2EE and smartphone operating systems. After N900 announcement it became clear that Nokia is serious about Maemo platform and this OS has bright future, so I'm considering adding it to my course as well. As a geek, I'm looking forward to N900 release, so I can have full Linux distro running within my pocket :) |
Re: New members say hello !

Re: New members say hello !
Hi. I pre-ordered an N900 on Amazon yesterday. I have an average background in scripting / programming, system administration, and "web stuff". I remember friendly debates with friends about the future of converged portable devices. 10 years ago it was hard to imagine, having no cell phone and an old Jordana, that I would ever want something like the N900. But now I would consider any portable device without a network connection (be it cell or wifi or other) an anachronism, frankly. I'm hoping the N900 will truly be useful as a 'computer in my pocket', and thinking of it in that way was how I justified the price. I will also finally put my unlimited data plan to good use.
Looking forward to participating in many positive discussions as well. |
