oh and it cost me £5 from a side street mobile phone shop!

I have this too. Still trying to figure out a nice way to route the charger and audio cables if I mount to the door side of my steering wheel. I'm not exactly happy with the view obstruction when it is dead center of the windshield.

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

In case anyone's been thinking of doing the same, the Brodit mount can be filed down to allow room for an Invisible Shield (the full body one). I'd not recommend it though. The plastic is extremely tough and it took forever even using a Dremel tool, and it was impossible to get smooth... but it works.

I picked up this cheap one too:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Tiny-Car-Holder-...#ht_4054wt_949

The grip works great but there are a few problems. It's portrait mode only (doesn't rotate), and the vent clip is a little too wide to fit between my car's vent louvres. Also it can push the power button inadvertently. Still it's much less intrusive than the Brodit, and with Sygic supposedly working in portrait mode, it could be a workable option w/Invisible Shield.

Just got my brodit active swivel mount thingy. 4 minutes to fit. Seems to do the job well, even bouncing over the pothole ridden roads around Ilkley Moor.

Now if I can only get my finger to stop bouncing up and down while I try to press the screen, perhaps some kind of arm securing device located on the holder. :)

I also have a novere case, which whilst making the device a little bit bulkier is actually really nice.

I got me the 'AIO PREMIUM CAR HOLDER & CHARGER FOR NOKIA N900 UK' and its pretty good. Ordered it from ebay and arrived in a week in Spain. The quality is good and the phone fits well. Maybe the charger cable is a bit short but that was ok for me. The headphone socket is free as you can see in the pics.

I forgot to make a pic for portrait mode but that works great too. Let me know if more pics are needed.

My Brodit active mount arrived yesterday - very well made. Shame it covers the power and camera buttons (but that can be fixed.... :O)

Also it needs a slight riggle to get the usb plug in - but I'm sure all N900s have a slight tolerance to how high those (dodgy) sockets from the mobo and frame.

Guys, I got this on the back of two other users to this forum but my advice is do not get this holder.

It certainly holds the N900 snug and well and secures to the windscreen well enough but there is a slight design flaw with this holder and it should not be marketed as suitable for the N900.

When you secure the N900 into the casing it is so snug that there is no clearance for the buttons on the top of the N900. When I place mine in it just continually holds down the volume keys on the top. Also, sometimes it is so snug and can easily hit the power button.

I have to half slide the N900 out of this to ensure the buttons are not being depressed.

For those who have purchased this I would really like to know if it does the same on your N900. I have been even trying to glue a small piece onto the holder underside to prevent the buttons being keyed.

Thoughts please....

Is there a way to fix it that does not involve taking a dremel to either my $100 mount or $600 phone? ;)

Hmm, I got one of these too and I must say I have been quite impressed with it, and certainly not noticed any buttons being covered up, now this may sound really really stupid but did you put it in the right way round as it is designed to only go in one way

*Sonic* 2010-03-27 19:53

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

Ive just been to double check mine again, and the only button that gets covered is the power button, but the holder part where the power button is covered has a groove in it so the holder applies no pressure to the power button

The volume keys and all other buttons on the phone and speakers all have cut outs on the holder part so are not covered at all

If you put the phone in the holder the other way round you dont have the groove for the power button and the volume keys are covered too

The release clip is where the top of the phone goes (with the usb socket)

I have invisiblesheld on the back of my n900. Just got Brodit passive and it doesn't seem to fit. I think I'm putting it in right with brodit logo at the bottom and the top grip slides between the gap between the screen and top buttons on the phone.I'm afraid of scratching or damaging the phone. It must be a snug fit without the shield. Is my only options to file down or take off the shield.Where do you file down??

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

You are right. It is a snug fit without the sheild. It is also possibel to alighn it wrongt and almost jam the N900 in teh holder. Once toy get the knack though it is fine.

What? There are three mounts at least listed on this thread. The passive and active ones from Brodit and another ebay one . What final answer are you after?

I concur, I would never let something that ugly touch my N900 (I exclude myself from that rule obviously! :p ).

I filed deeper channels, mostly on the top where the buttons slide but also at the opposing side. It seems like it would weaken the holder but if you don't go overboard it's not a problem. I also needed to remove the angled guides where the edges meet the flat part. These are the parts that press against the long edges of the back of the phone (up close they look like two short, extremely wide stairways). Luckily the flat backing itself didn't interfere.

I'll emphasize that it came out looking really ugly in my case and wasn't worth the bother. The plastic is extremely tough and hard to remove, let alone get smooth. Also I chewed up part of the invis. shield by repeatedly sliding the phone in to test the fit.

Just a quick question, has anyone else had any dealings with car-mounts.co.uk? I only ask because at the point of ordering yesterday I received an email titled "Thank you for you order" and starting "We will be in touch as soon as possible about your order, the details of which are as follows:" then showing all the details.

But I haven't heard anything further today. Which I was expecting since I ordered around 5:30pm yesterday.

Thanks,

What i need now is an L-shaped micro USB charger plug. It would look much tidier and less chance of being knocked by someone in the passenger seat.

It looks nice, tho I don't know if it would look good in my VW Jetta, considering where the lighter is.

The other problem is that it only seems to be available in the UK.

I'm struggling here trying to find a good solution. I have a mount which used to hold my XM Radio. What I want is a holder that I can put there, but I'm not finding one that doesn't look humongous and ugly. ProClip would be the best solution, but its price and the fact that it is so fricking tight that it can't accommodate an Invisible Shield is a non-starter for me.

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

looks nice, I'm waiting for a brodit passive holder and pro clip, but personally, I want the phone higher so i can change stuff while I'm watching the road. The bad thing is, that the charger cable will be over the interior, my lighter is placed as low as yours.

That is just for the Brodit mounts which have already been mentioned and available from quite a few suppliers now.

Sadly, I can't recommend the Dash Genie (above) for the N900 :(

With the N900 in portrait, the protruding camera cover prevents the phone lying flat against the holder and as a result it only manages to make about 25% contact with the adhesive 'blob'. This does hold the phone, but not strongly. A solution (which I'll try) would be to cut the holder off above the 'blob' which should then allow the N900 to lie flat against the 'blob and make full contact.

With the N900 in landscape, again the protruding camera lens prevents a full contact, but you can offset the phone to the left to avoid this. Even offset the phone only makes about 75% contact, as the 'blob' is slightly too high. You could physically raise the phone ~15mm by placing something underneath it to make fuller contact with the adhesive blob.

Finally, I don't think the matt finish and the engraved "NOKIA NSeries" branding on the back of the N900 lends itself to making a good adhesion.

Conclusion: the holder holds the N900 but not securely. I'd therefore say that this holder is not suitable for the N900 :(

Hey, I have the brodit active mount, which is great. However if I plug a 3.5mm jack lead between the n900 and the aux in I get serious interference when the n900 is charging.
I don't get this problem in the house when I am charging it and have it plugged into external speakers.

anyone have some advice on how to solve this issue? It's really quite annoying.

Thanks

bockersjv 2010-04-07 19:44

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

I have the same issue. not with the brodit active mount but with the Nokia Car charger. The n900 is unusable as a media player etc if the charger is plugged in.

I do not have this issue with other devices that are playing music and charging.

I have tried wrapping adding chokes to all the cables but it made little difference. Still unusable whilst charging.

Re: N900: Car Kit & Mounts

This problem has existed with all the nokia maemo devices since the 770. To fix it you need to install a Ground Loop Isolator in the headphone out cable.

Most Isolators are based on Phono Connectors, but the PAC SNI1/3.5 comes with 3.5mm jack connections.

US Google Product Seach
UK Google Product Search
Ebay US

I haven't tried one with my N900 yet, but I've got a long journey coming up so will be buying one soon.

Bought a ground loop isolator. Works a treat. However i have read that these can cause a loss of sound quality. To early to tell if this is the case, will do some listening tests tomorrow. Beats the unlistenable fuz and hum.

I also bought the AIO Premium one shown by falter and I have to say it is top-notch.
Very secure and stable, and full access to the volume and unlock buttons - I've slotted the phone in the other way so the volume button can be accessed. Yes the power and camera buttons are covered but are these needed while driving?
I've used it for maps/music/phone all with bluetooth and no issues. Charger also works fine too.
Thanks for posting the original one guys

brodit stuff is a bit expensive but for me it is worth the money..
Its extremely easy to slide in and out of the cradle, its active and the best part.. You can use the keyboard because you can slide your N900 open..

Very satisfied with it.
