Yes please! As you say, it's quite an expensive app, so the more feedback we can read, the better. Presumably you're feeding this back to Sygic as well, so they can try and fix some of these issues?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I think the "lag" isn't Sygic's fault since Ovi Maps is also 10-50m behind the real position all the time.

It must be some sort of delay between GPS-driver -> program which parses the info and displays it on the screen.

I'm going to buy this program as soon as it's available via Sygic's Shop. I've used Sygic in the past with my E90 & N97 :)

I just got an update from Sygic:

Quote:

Hello,

I would like to inform you that Sygic will be available very soon. You will need to purchase whole product because it is not compatible with any other OS.

Thank you for contacting support and for your interest in our products.

Best regards

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Quick update:
Performed to short (2 mile) journeys today and didn't have any lag. I am reporting the problems I find to Sygic.

What I do like about it is that once you get used to the screens it is quick and easy to use. If I have a few more trouble free journeys then I would conclude that the lag may be a gps issue as the previous poster has mentioned.

I will post back with further info as acquired.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Do you have an external buetooth GPS to test it with? Maybe that removes the lag?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Hi Robbie
No I don't have another gps to test with unfortunately. Does anyone know of an app used for testing the gps for problems and drop-outs?

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Has anyone got a reply on the exact date from Sygic regarding the release?
They mailed me 2 weeks ago that the approx date is 18th of Jan.

cardiff-blues 2010-01-18 15:08

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I was told 18th Jan, a few days ago but that might be week commencing and might be subject to any last minute bug fixing

stantheboss 2010-01-18 15:16

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Thanks for the confirmation, let's hope it'll get released anytime this week.
It's not because of (mostly) a bug fixing though, it's due to simultaneous lunch on Maemo Select and the Sygic on-line shop, that's what I've been told lately.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Still can't purchase it, however on Sygic store it looks like you won't be able to buy a full Western Europe map if you choose Maemo, and that's a big disappointment to me. You can buy it for Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian and Android, but for Maemo you must buy individual European maps.

I hope this will be addressed when the product is available for purchase, but I have a really bad feeling about it

This would result in me not buying sygic...

In case someone missed the information.
SygicOfficial@Twitter:
"Dear Maemo fans, we have sumbitted the app to Nokia Ovi store last Thursday already, waiting for approval.More info/prices/etc. is coming..."

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I wonder if we'll be able to use the Sygic maps from another platform? Does anyone know if they are compatible across platforms (Android, iPhone, Maemo, Windows Mobile)?
Since I already have the windows mobile version, I would get the Maemo version with the cheapest maps and just transfer my Windows Europe map to it...

it will not end up in ovi store until there is a fix for paid content being got for free via xterminal
so might have to wait a while for this

And for me to love it. I'm happy for the opportunety to just buy a region. But I do think that they should have the option of buying the whole continent (or at least an east or west side of it).

I guess that's the case, since it still says "coming soon" on the Sygic website!

...and again we're waiting for Nokia, weird...

@cardiff-blues: Can you tell me the file structure / file extension of your maps folder for Sygic please? If it is different to other versions Sygic uses a different map format for Maemo which would be bad :(
I got an email from Sygic regarding the maps:

Quote:

It is not possible. You will need to download application and maps form OVI store. Application will be smaller than current application for other OS. So I believe that your internet connection won’t be big problem.
So I want to be sure.

Apparently Africa doesn't exist.
Or has no streets maybe!
Oh well, I guess I'm stuck with Ovi 1 Maps...
Anyway the thread title should be sygic announces turn-by-turn navigation for some countries for Maemo - it clearly isn't worldwide. :-)

Yeah, I also noticed that.. I travel all over europe all the time, so if they don't offer me the possibility to buy all of europe at a reasonable price I don't have much incentive to buy. For the nokia n95 it is 80 euros for the whole of europe which is not cheap but acceptable from my point of view.

Exactly, I don't have any problems paying 80 euros for the whole European map, but no way I'm paying 40 or 50 for Spain alone. If they don't offer full European maps (like they do in every other device), I won't buy it.

I just emailed Sygic about it, I hope I will get an answer soon.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

dont know if you can read too much into what maps are showing as available on sygic's store. Have you looked at the download file sizes. US east coast is 1.7GB and west coast is 100MB. I dont know much about the american road system (apart from the fact that they use the wrong side ;) ) but I am sure there is not that many more roads on the east.

On what page did you see that? I mailed them and asked if they would bring out a reduced 'benelux only' version and they said that was not in the planning.

Never mind. I see it here: http://sygic.com/index.php/en/how-to-buy.html

My wish has been granted :)

Just got an email response from Sygic:

Quote:

Dear sir,

European maps has to be split due to application size restrictions on the Maemo platform. On the other hand, it is not a problem to use more packages at once – you will be able to navigate from Sweden to Italy without any problem for example.

Thank you for contacting support and your interest in our products!

Sygic website shop doesn't give the option of Australian & NZ maps on the Maemo version ? Hope this is not true.

I just mailed them back asking that same question, because I'm afraid that purchasing every individual map will be much more expensive than those €79,95 that every other platform has to pay for the full map

I understand that it's not cheaper for people that travel a lot in europe.

In my case i don't mind. In 99% of the i will be driving though benelux. And when i go to another country i can decide to buy the map of the destination country and not the onces that i'm traveling through because you need navigation more in the cities than on the highways.

So if they make the country downloads cheaper than whole europe, i'm happy.

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

Bad news, it looks like there won't be any map packages or discounts anytime soon. Now the good news, if we buy individual maps, they will "link" together and we will be able to calculate routes and do seamless navigation. Here's what they told me.

Quote:

If you will buy packages that covers whole route from Spain to Germany, you will be able to navigate without any limitation.

Unfortunately, I’m not able to tell you if any Western Europe map pack will be available as it was not yet decided. Currently and in near future, we will sell only those European packages already available.

I got an email from Sygic regarding the maps:

So I want to be sure.

Sorry for the delay. Just looking now and I can't see the file structure from Mass Storage or File Manager. Where is it likely to be?

LordJuanlo 2010-01-19 15:36

Re: Sygic announces world-wide turn-by-turn navigation for Maemo

I got a very fast answer from Sygic regarding my concerns about this situation, that's what they just told me:

Quote:

I fully agree with you, but I’m not able to change the countries included in packages or so. I will forward your email to responsible person and hopefully they will take some steps.

I do not think that price for whole Europe will be hundreds of Euro, but in fact, I still don’t know exact price for packages too.
In short: on Symbian, iPhone, Windows Mobile and Android you can get a full European map for €79,95, but on Maemo we will have to buy individual maps that, I'm sure, they will be much more expensive together than a full European map.

If anyone is as interested and worried as I am, please let Sygic know and contact their support (support at sygic.com, replace at with @), they need to know that lots of people find this situation unfair.

I asked about Australian maps, but they sent me a canned response saying the program will be released very soon. I asked about Australian maps again in a reply and am still waiting back.

Hopefully Australian maps are available as they are with the iphone and all the rest.

What I can confirm is that in the test version I have the ability to install maps for: Benelux, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Eastern Europe, France, Iberia, Italy Nordics.

Although not sure if these will be available in release version.

I'm sure all of them will be available, but I'm afraid that the price of all together will be more than the €79,95 that other platforms pay. That's why we need to contact Sygic and express our concerns. They have not announced pricing yet, so you never know, we could get something

As long as we (you) don't now the price, there's no need to panic. If all the maps together are 79,95 then its better for all of us. More choice for the same price. So lets wait and see.
