bump any progress peeps :)

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

Nothing new over here. I was able to boot Android 2.1 on the n900, but that was only after playing around with the omap framebuffer driver that doesn't support page flipping. I don't think anyone wants to see android only take up half the n900 screen :-)

any progress is good progress! Keep up the playing, maybe some day it will work as we all hope.

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

Ok, so here it where it stands now. Android 2.1 boots on the N900, keyboard works, still no connectivity yet.

I've gotten the wl12xx wifi driver to load, but the wpa_supplicant has problems scanning for access points and its a kernel issue thats not supported. I even tried using the wlan 1251 driver from TI, but it fails when loading. And the drivers from http://linuxwireless.org fail to load also.

Bluetooth using rfkill doesn't seem to be supported either even if I enable it in the kernel.

Still kickin though! If anything I would at least like to get wifi working.

Thanks for the update!

Have you got the touch screen all sorted out now also?
Would love a list of what's functional and what isn't. =)

Such as:
- Phone
- SMS
- Music player
- Camera
- Video Calls
etc etc...

Okay. Charging/Battery is very important. :p
Then full phone functionality (call/sms) is next.
Then sound for music playback.
These alone would be good enough for me. =)

If you can get them working, would love a alpha-release to the public. :D

wowsers! bdogg you are making awesome progress. Are you trying to be a 1 man wrecking crew when it comes to getting this running or are up for help? (not from me;) The reason I ask is that it seems like you are making a lot of progress yourself but might move even faster with multiple eyes on what you are doing.

Unrelated Rambling:
I never really understood how so many people got involved with making the Mer alternative when an open source, portable OS (Android) has been out there, waiting for someone smarter than I to port it to my beloved sidekick in the N810 (unless there is a huge, impassible obstacle).

Android isn't as open source as some users may like.

I wish this project gets completed. I would like to see Android on the n900. Again anything u do install or change is optional and wud be kl to have it as a dual boot device.
I support all the folk that take their time out an put the hard work in to make all these great apps/os/games/mods/hacks etc. Without u guys these devices wud suck!

So keep it up an let us knw wen u aim or hope to have the android os up :D

I'd rather someone else take over the project honestly, because its just that to me, a project. I'm not even really attempting to get a full blown working android build on the n900. It would be nice, but that's beyond the time and effort I have. I don't care to replace maemo with android, mer or whatever. I just like the option of having them. I'll leave that to the platform zealots. I posted the patches I used to get it working before and will gladly do it again if anyone wants it.

one thing for sure is more people are needed in this project, i suggest a wiki or a form to be made as a home for this project and everything you have done so far you can post as a tutorial for users on how they would install android on their phones, and I'm sure more will contribute and we can all work together to make it happen. and as for me I'm willing to help you out with it .

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

maybe if there are more incentives...more people will be more willing to help...for example..over at xda...every rom dev. ask for donation like that's their only source of income....no offense to them at all..Just saying...they ARE putting a lot of their time on it....I donated to a couple of the devs that create ROMs I used....they work really hard too....

mrdally204 2010-02-27 08:07

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

azz the only problem with that is what comes first the chicken or the egg. While I wouldn't mind tossing some money to the devs that bring my N810 new life, I would want a working product before I did so. So you have to convince a devs that the money will be there if they complete the project.

We can start a running donation tab somehow that would get paid if the project ever gets completed and maybe bribe some people into the project. Not sure how to go about it but I'm sure there is a safe, logical legal way

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

I always liked the project bounty idea, put up amounts of money for different areas of the OS. Someone gets cell network and phone functionality working then they get X amount, and X is more then Y amount for something like the lock switch. It lets devs know where the end user wants them to focus and gives them a hard cash prize for reaching certain goal posts. :)

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

We just need a trusty person with a paypal account (or alternate payment account) to hold on to the donation. It would be a great idea. I am sure if all maemo user donate just ONE dollar, we will have a big incentive for these guys to get something going. Bdogg is making great progress but it seems like he is the only one will working on this and even he isn't as enthused about putting too much time and energy into this project.

I remember following a couple of the guys at xda trying to get google map navigation to work on other devices other than the Droid. It took them about two days and 20 or so of the users/dev to test out different types of string to fool the app to let navigation work. I know this isn't the same as get a WHOLE os to work on another device but the energy level there are waaay high....:D

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

Always ask yourself, "What do I really want here?"

Obviously Solca, bri3d and bdogg64 are all doing this to see if they can, like mountaineers trying to scale Everest.

For me, I want to see a recent, working mainline kernel come to the N8x0.

There are others of you here, however (like me, you're not doing the actual coding), who seem to have another agenda. You seem to want something specific from an Android port, something you feel is lacking from Maemo.

Perhaps you would be better to ask for apps of equivalent functionality to be written / ported for Maemo?

What specifically do you want here?

If someone else managed the website that showed the donations, I'd be happy to handle them through paypal. I've done it before. Then we'd only really need to get someone to create a detailed list of what still needs to be done, so we have goals to set/donate to such as getting charging working.

Might even be able to get some Android/tech blogs to feature the initiative. :)

I agree with your view too. I guess many of us just wants to be able to use apps from phones such as iphone and android thus we unconciously want that OS in our device. Our community feel small when compared to the apps on other devices. I have used android and iphone and I hated what they stand for. I honestly don't know what i want. I am sure many peeps around here feel the same. They are open to anything...I'm just babbling now....I think many of us are just a bit down because OVI store isn't getting nowhere and sygic isn't here yet...

alecrim, luke-jr and Termana has a 2.6.33 going on N8x0 and is showing promising results.. Had diablo (minus dsp) booting it seems.

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

I think a lot of people here want recognition from others with other phones. If you think about it the N900 and driod has similar hardward, the N900 even has a slightly faster processor, I think a lot of people here want to have andriod 2.1 ported over so they can say we got better hardware, and the capability to port over your OS, and show the mobile world the driod doesn't deserve to be marketed as the most open source phone

I'll admit it. I want to see andriod on this phone too, andriod 2.1. It'll seem foolish to waste your time argueing with your friends which OSs on your phones' are better when you could run their OS too

I think a lot of us are insecure about the future of maemo especially because nokia is switching to meego. We MIGHT gets apps as a result from meego development. But why wonder when we run apps off Andriod

You make a good point, but my answer is freedom. The N900 is a platform based on software freedom and open source values, we have the possibility of running anything on here, without going to extreme lengths to 'crack' or 'jailbreak' the phone.

Android and Mer are just other options that we can have the freedom to choose from, while I personally believe Maemo is better then Android for the N900 in *many* ways, there are still things that Android does better. And the freedom to choose which you want to use is important. I would love to have a dual/tri boot mode where I could switch off between the three depending on how I'm feeling like dealing with my information that day.

I want the freedom to choose. And I don't think I'm quite alone in that belief. :)

id be more than willing to help out getting a port working for both n900 and the n8x0 and i would be more than willing to build a wiki and provide site for such as i have said previously in this toppic and not really had a response that much

edit: just saw helmys offer above also. id be more than willing to work with people to try and get this working and some sort of site up. and i dont mind reflashing my n800 to test things either

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

Helmy,
Can you have 2 sections, for N900 and Legacy N8x0 devices. I'm not sure how much code can be shared between the 2, but I would love to have a space available for legacy devs to work as well if they want to

mrojas 2010-03-01 04:26

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

I am pretty sure that people see Diablo right now as a dead end, and would like to have Android in order to breathe new life in their devices, considering that Android has more widespread usage, more apps, etc.

dj_steve 2010-03-01 08:49

Re: [Android] Eclair NITDroid (WIP)

yes, ill be happy to help out, and most certainly would prefer a legacy section to as i only have my n800 at moment (my phone contract isnt up for upgrade till may )

but ive got a tmobile g1 at moment if getting info off that wouldbe any use for anything, also have some experiance doing custom kernelrs from, a projects i helped with on xda

i dont have a n900 to test with just my 800 so id have to rely on others their and id need the patches - ive got the android kernel and omap parts - strangly the kernel has options for the gfx and sound so ive enabled them too, its complaining abotu a certain module so im working round that now

I have an N900 and a tester mentality, e.g. if I see a button I push it (can't resist). So if you need someone with an N900 who doesn't care about reflashing(I'm going to do it anyways), I'm more then willing to help out, just tell me what to do and I'll tell you if it works or bricks. :)
