No.

What are they? I am suspicious of the use of the word "vast" here. I am wondering if we must lower our expectations significantly to allow unnoticable improvements to be called vast. :)

Well, I guess that about covers it.

I had this fantasy that I was hallucinating about not seeing any improvements.
Looks the same to me,
but I thought I would least ask to make sure that my perceptions were not
skewed by false hopes or some neurological malfunction on my part.
My take on it is they seemed to have made some virtually imperceptible changes,
but the application remains a hopelessly brainless piece of crippleware.

Claws, with all its minor annoyances,
is still at least two orders of magnitude better than modest.

Thanks for your response, it is appreciated. :)

Re: How bad is the mail client...

Only improvement is that it doesn't take 45 seconds to open now.
At least that made it bearable, I was about to toss the N900 because I was sick of waiting 45 secs for it to open a new email. Took less time to get the email to the phone from the sender than it did to read it.

But there is still so many things wrong with this mail client.

I dunno I am about to get a Desire HD and just use the N900 as a play toy because I can't be bothered with the email anymore.

[Bug 3888] IMAP-IDLE not working : Fixed in Harmattan.

Finally ...

I just wonder if it's done in Modest itself (so someone can make an Fremantle version out of it) or in a closed Nokia binary ?

I don't dare putting this question in Bugzilla, Andre would probably use his bazooka to tell me off for asking non-directly bug related questions...

Anyone has an idea ?

EDIT : He already did it with another guy :D

We don't know for sure yet, but there are good indications that Modest is well and truly dead and the Harmattan MUA is going to be a Qt one based on QMF. If so it shouldn't be too hard to backport to Fremantle or possibly even Diablo (in theory, and assuming it's open source).

Re: How bad is the mail client...

I am dissapointed as well with Modest. I looked into the source code folders (no, I am not a developer) and found indication that it is a hack of tinymail and that it's purpose is to be "modest".

That sounds like Notepad for LaTeX editing or Paint for drawing nice pictures. It is not enough !

I think there is a chance to change some things like Email filtering and something like "mark all messages read" but I have no clue how to do that and people who can seem to stuck with Meego now.

I don't know what to do

The email client is the elephant in the room issue for n900. It is hooribly slow, cannot copy paste unless you forward/reply it, there is no way to search/organize/tag emails, email push doesn't work for major email providers, etc...

When someone points these issues, (s)he is accused of having big inbox, not love for n900, etc...

So what can we do ?

Do you have programming capabilities econan? Do you know somenone of the maemo community that does have the ability ?
Is it possible to compile a new version of Modest without the help of Nokia ?

Has someone tested Kontact?
Maybe a good replacement once it's more polished.

I agree that modest is more or less "proof of concept", but please read manual: On page 70
"Press and hold the shift key, and use the arrow keys to
select text."

.edit
Seems that manual is not entirely correct. It should say that use stylus or finger while holding shift to select text.

zauruslover 2010-12-21 15:25

Re: How bad is the mail client...

Could you post the link of the Modest manual, please !?

Maybe there is also a shortcut for "mark all messages read" !?

Which only works if you are forwarding or replying (or creating, someplace with a cursor and text input)... as econan said. You can't copy from an e-mail that you are reading.

What? I can mark text in my messages when Iīm reading them. After that itīs just matter of ctrl-c and ctrl-v as usual.

Itīs even in N900 manual.

.edit
And also in Wiki

Re: How bad is the mail client...

Okay, you're right but you gave partially wrong instructions. :)

It works if you hold shift and use finger/stylus to select text. Shift + arrow does not do anything (for me). Thanks for the tip.

Re: How bad is the mail client...

I've had all those problems that have been posted here. In my case the solution has been to use a Nokia Messaging account in order to integrate my mails accounts. I've setted those in my N900 and now it seems other!! Mail faster, posiblity of choosing hours for sync and few more features has been added to my device!!.

It may seems strange but I would say that all my phone performance has been improved, not only the mail cient!!

The unique problem that I've found with Nokia Messaging is that mail widget only show the number of unread messages and no longer shows the subjects in messages.

zlatko 2010-12-21 18:21

Re: How bad is the mail client...

@davogr
Nokia Messaging is better experience and you can use IMAP Idle, but in my country I have to pay monthly fee to use this service. Even if I access my company run mail server. Which is a shame.

davogr 2010-12-22 07:55

Re: How bad is the mail client...

In my country my NM account says "In trial period"...I guess Nokia Messaging will be paying in short and I go back to my slow and heavy mail client...Really I don`t understand not, really is a shame. I'm wondering...somebody will pay for this when you've got free mail accounts??I hope not...;)

Every time I see this thread pop up I usually have restraints
and fetters in place, but this time I am off my meds
and the attendants were away, so - :D:eek::D:eek::D:rolleyes:

How bad is the email client...

There needs to be a new word in the dictionary.
Modest is not just bad, it goes beyond the word 'bad'
by several orders of magnitude.:mad::mad::mad::mad:

Unsatisfactory - not even in the same league
Atrocity - usually reserved for physical injury,
and certainly inadequate for the mental torment Modest doles out
Despicable - kinda lame.
Ridiculous - Modest fraks up a lot more seriously than that.

The imagination, the thesaurus and even Ambrose Bierce
have no words to describe how fundamentally flawed the
email client shipped with the n900 truly is.

Use claws-mail if you are not masochistic.

alainlux 2010-12-22 17:05

Re: How bad is the mail client... => use claws-mail

Another weird shortcoming is that there is no way to collapse folder tree... which can be annoying if you have a huge folder hierarchy on your imap server.

Due to this, and due to the slowness logging in, I looked for alternatives... and found:

claws-mail

It's UI is a little bit rough, and takes some time getting accustomed to it, but it has everything that the built-in mail hasn't: fast log-in, collapsible IMAP folders, light on the CPU, etc. And the non-standard scrolling is actually more convenient (faster) than the standard way.

So for those who prefer function over appearance, here is your solution.

Re: How bad is the mail client...

I can give the warning that android isn't any better. a family member asked me to sync theirs with outlook. with their horrible windows mobile phone it was as simple as plugging it in and watching activesync do its thing.

samsung offers a suite for android that would help if the handset was supported by it. solutions suggested by forums are to install thunderbird...get outlook's settings file from that. transfer those settings to some special app on the market. or just give up everything and make them run it through a google account. wait...what?

slender 2010-12-22 18:11

Re: How bad is the mail client...

@anonymous,
I think that people are here talking about _BASIC_ features of e-mail app and itīs speed. Sync issues are pretty general on all devices when we go outside of sanbox where device was meant to be.

Here is some:

btw. This brainstorm things just makes me sad. So sad :| Talking about potential.

In devel was released a packet "QMF mail client". Did anybody try it?
GUI is not very finger-friendly...but probably it will be better.

I am having an issue with the stock e-mail client. my e-mails are being deleted autonomously. Last night when i checked my e-mail i was searching for one from a few weeks ago with some information i needed. Despite my best efforts i couldn't locate the e-mail. I did notice, however, the number of e-mails in the inbox. 410. This morning i opened it to search again for something else and this time my box said 380 messages total.

Does anyone know where, or why, my e-mails are disappearing to? Or better yet, how to get them to stop.

I have done a search but can't find an answer. There seems to be a limit on the size of attachment you can send. What is it and can it be overridden?

But I get the same issue with my work account which is small, like only about 5,000 emails.

I'd like to test it by turning off any folder checking, but there is no option for that :(

I am jealous of you chase15

Geez, delete some emails!! There should be no need to keep thousands and thousands of emails. Otherwise, if it's totally necessary, archive the 19,950 you don't use regularly.
