It has nothing to do with hildon-desktop, modified or otherwise. It is due to ill conceived changes to the extras-devel autobuilder.

What you can do is download the source and compile it yourself in the correct version of the SDK, or hope that someone else does this.

I can't download Modified Hildon Desktop..Is this reason of waiting on new update, or is this problem with me? :)

There is no known issue with the server, and the file was downloaded a few times in the last hour, so I guess the problem is at your end. Can you view http://my.arava.co.il/~matan/repo/binary/ with the browser?

Hi Guys,

Tried to install extra screens too but ended up with the not able to change background so uninstalled the modified hildon and restored the original hildon desktop. All went fine till now.

After that I tried another time same result but now I tried to install the hildon-home_0.3.58+0m5_armel.deb and the modified-hildon-desktop_1.13_armel.deb.
Didn't worked no screen at all. so uninstalled the modified hildon again and tried to restore hildon desktop, nothing happend, only one black screen.
Installed modified hildon again and reinstalled the hildon desktop.

Problem is now I have only 1 screen left....and rebooting doesn't help...

Can somebody help me to restore the other 3 or do I need to reflash my N900 (am not in the mood for that to be honest...)

Edit: uninstalling (with dpkg --purge the hildon-home_0.3.58+0m5_armel.deb & modified-hildon-desktop_1.13_armel.deb. doesn't do the trick.

Yes does anyone know how to remove these two files and a link to the original ones if any? The modified desktop file is fine but when I installed these it left me with no selectable images when I go in to change background image I just get blank box with More and done tabs. Someone else a few pages back posted the same problem. This only happened after installing these two files.

Is there NOBODY that can help me with restoring my 4 screens???....
am left with only 1 now...(ok that is functional too, but would like to have at least my other 3 back too...)(see post above)

Restoring the Hildon desktop goes fine, it only shows 1 screen so I guess there is something else what's in the way or missing???

Did u run

sudo gainroot
apt-get install --reinstall hildon-desktop

Then reboot your device ;)

also uninstall mod hildon desktop from app manager?
also does your manage view option show 4 desktops?

but nothing helped...

today reading your last line...and while testing my brain
to look for manage view i finally found it and guess what....

YEP, all unchecked except 1.:eek:...this is sooo dumb....and stupid :o:o:o...
Checked all 4 and it is working like a charm again...

The information in that blog post is not entirely correct. If you want to be able to set different background for all 9 views, you also need to install an enhanced version of hildon-home. Instructions for this are somewhere in this thread.

Also, "nabeel - n900/images/01.jpg" is not a correct path.

bunch of warnings not to use this app in that link, its old and cant be updated (paraphrasing whats on the page in the comments section) just wait till some one makes a app for it i would suggest. or ask some one to do it

You don't know what you are talking about.

The version that should not be used is the one in extras-devel (which has been removed from that repository, since then).

The version in my repository is current, supported (in the sense that I fix bugs if found), and is perfectly safe. It works just like hildon-desktop, and you can only enable the extra features you are interested in.

woaaa... easy turbo.. remember i typed "(paraphrasing whats on the page in the comments section)" i just saw a question and answered it. i didnt check the dates on it. but i would hope that anyone going to install this or anything for that matter would investigate more. I was scared off by the first few comments on that page. but yes i agree, i dont know first hand what i am talking about. just passing on some of the info from that ink to save folks a click and a bunch of comments.

But since it's perfectly safe as you say that is awesome!

hello Matan!

i love the modded hildon desktop congrats!
I just need some help, im a beginner at x terminal, i got the command for the extra desktops working BUT im not understanding what to put in the path for the background,

im putting /.barbalonga/images/05.jpeg but its not taking the command, so i guess im specifying the path for the pic in a wrong way. can you please help?

This command to activate the specific image on the screen no' 5:
gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/5/bg-image -t string /home/user/MyDocs/.images/your_picture.jpg

That is what I am doing, but the background remains black. My drives name is .barbalonga and there is a folder in it called images, inside there is a pic called 01.jpeg.

when i run that command with the same line you posted except 01.jpeg in the pics name it remains black.

when i run the command with /.barbalonga/images/01.jpeg it still remains black.

what am i doing wrong?

If your folder ".barbalonga" is located inside the folder "images", you should write:

gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/5/bg-image -t string /home/user/MyDocs/.images/barbalonga/your_picture.jpg

If your folder ".barbalonga" is located outside the folder "images", you should write:

gconftool -s /apps/osso/hildon-desktop/views/5/bg-image -t string /home/user/MyDocs/barbalonga/your_picture.jpg

I tried the above, the background is still black. Lets say im going to the file through the file manager:

.Barbalonga --> Images --> 01.jpeg

so i wrote:

the command followed by /home/user/MyDocs/.Barbalonga/Images/01.jpeg

still wrong?

I have the exact same problem! it has nothing to do with the directory, i changed the value "5" to "4" and indeed the 4th screen changed to the right background, where as 5,6,7 or 8 would stay black! Any ideas??

existing 4 desktop background has been updated but 5,6 and 7 still black

Notes:

With this version you can select which views to enable from the GUI. The dialog which shows 4 screens is horizontally scrollable.

Running the commands (as user)
should allow for selecting background from the GUI, without the black screen problems.

I could use alittle help please.
I installed hildon-home_0.3.66-2+0m5_armel fresh after pr1.2
(i did not try 9 desktops prior to pr1.2)
ran these codes
"cd /home/user/.backgrounds/
rm cache.info
cp background-1.png background-5.png
cp background-1.png background-6.png
cp background-1.png background-7.png
cp background-1.png background-8.png
cp background-1.png background-9.png"

I see the 9 screens on the active view manager, checked all 9, but only the default 4 shows up

I wanted to use 8 screens with that water theme (you know, water1 to water4 and then water1 to water4 again - so the loop would be still functional) ... but when I enter the adresses of those files, it only changes the backgrounds of the first four screens. When I tried to change the bg via GUI, its makes nothing. It stays black (probably cause Ive used a black 800x480px black-only jpg in the beginning) ...

ADD. If I use the commands to change one of the first screens to either black or water, it works. But not for the higher numbers ... Restart didnt work either ...

I afraid I dont full understand - Ive made copies of the backgroud files inside .backgrounds folder and deleted cache.info file ... then reboot ... after reboot, I found out that the cache.info file is back and contains 4 correct entries for the first four background. But I still cannot change the BG, even after Ive copied the entries in cache file and adjusted their numbers ...
