Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Hi,

Thanks for this great update, I will give it a try on my next geocaching adventure.

After upgrading to the new version, the detail view of a downloaded cache did not work anymore (a not yet full downloaded cache worked). After doing some debugging I saw that python-gtkhtml2 was missing. A simple "sudo gainroot; apt-get install python-gtkhtml2" solved this problem. Perhaps you should add this package as a requirement to the agtl deb package.

Thanks again!

Yes, there was a dependency missing. Should be fixed by build number 1 (0.7.0.0-1), on it's way to the repository right now.

Here is a short feedback to the new version:
  • There are no logs listed when there is a hint
  • No Images are displayed in the Description view (HTML)

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

What is the latest information on adding repositories, I'd like to be able to use Finnish Land Survey maps, but I haven't yet figured out the magic incantation needed for this?

GoogleMaps seems to work with the following:

[
"GoogleMaps",
{
"prefix": "GoogleMaps",
"remote_url": "http://mt0.google.com/vt/x=%(x)d&y=%(y)d&z=%(zoom)d"
}
],

As you may know, Version 0.7.0.0 is also my official entry for the maemo coding competition. So everyone who likes my application is invited to vote for it in this thread.

Thanks!

I can't reproduce the first bug... do you have more information for me?

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

That's strange, I can't reproduce it anymore... Sorry!

http://www.danielfett.de/images/agtl...ot-0.7.0.0.png

Version 0.7.0.1 is here, fixing these bugs:
- Uploading of fieldnotes didn't work
- Small improvements in the indicator for the current position
- Save the last state of the "follow position" button
- Disable HTML view by default

The HTML view has a scrolling bug, which becomes worse when I enable images. Thus, it is now disabled by default until I find a workaround for the bug.

Again, if you haven't done it yet, please vote for AGTL in this thread.

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Really big thanks for this 0.7 version! I love portrait mode!

One small bug (or user error): In previous version (0.6) there was a "Set to Target" button in Coords tab and there were possibility to select which coordinate is target. Now button is missing. If there is a additional coordinates (e.g. parking place for cache) I can not choose that coordinate anymore. I'll have manually set that in GPS view. Also if I add waypoint in Notes tab I can not choose that coordinate either.

Also in change target view (behind GPS view) there is list of coordinates visible (e.g. geocache, parking area, manually entered) but there is no possibility to choose any of those. Only possibility to change coordinates is manually change coordinates.

Please vote this application!

Images listed in the "Images" tab are not shown either anymore when you click on them.

This is a missing dependency. I've already fixed this bug and will release another bug fix release later the day. Other listings are affected as well.

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I've released Version 0.7.0.2, which fixes three bugs:
- downloading of virtual geocaches
- python-hildon dependency (lists not clickable)
- python-dbus dependency (application crashing on startup)

Please remember to vote at the maemo coding competiton. The poll is closing in three hours.

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I've been taking the latest version of AGTL out exploring this weekend (having not been out caching for the last couple of months). The improvements were very noticable since the last version I used extensively.

I was particularly pleased to see the cache names on the map showing in black... the measue of distance to the target... and the arrow to show which way you're heading.

Webhamster - thanks a billion for continuing to build and support this brilliant app. One day I'll buy you some beer.

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I'm still enjoying using your app and would like to thank you for the changes in the update. The potrait view is brilliant and I love the search function.

I do have a couple issues though:

The previous / next arrows don't always show up in portrait view.
The 'my location' pointer and the cache location indicator seem to be tiny now.

Thanks again for this great app :)

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Is this the correct thread to ask questions regarding AGTL?
Or is there another spot somewhere?

I have a question and possible issue.

My question is where does AGTL save maps when you download them for offline use?
I just had a little look with file manager and could not see anything.

My potential issue is that since installing 0.7.0.2 I notice the other standard apps, like text messaging, browsing etc are very jerky and screen refresh is random (sometimes it does not occur).
Has this been come across before?

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Is it possible to link AGTL to Ovi Maps so you can use navigation to take you to the caching location?

spoonbuddy 2010-08-21 09:34

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Oops, another question, yes I am playing with the AGTL application!

Is there a limit to the amount of openstreet mapping you can download? Today I am just getting the ' Could not load image ' message displayed.

spoonbuddy 2010-08-22 22:53

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I have found out that the amount of map data you can download is proportional to the amount of memory space left on the device and I have used it all up.:o

How do I delete some of the map tiles I have downloaded?

spoonbuddy 2010-09-09 15:10

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Webhamster, is there a way I can purge all data from AGTL and start again?

webhamster 2010-09-09 16:19

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

If you want to delete all settings and saved data, remove .agtl, like this:

rm -r ~/.agtl

(double check for spaces or spelling errors before running this)

To delete the map data, run

rm -r ~/MyDocs/.maps

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Thanks, I have run the second command and have got back over 12GB of memory  I am struggling to understand how to download the sections of map I want and seem to get an awful lot of errors  Off to have a play again, I will crack it. :D

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

Downloaded 5 levels of map tiles for my intended destination in the Derbyshire Peak District, worked a treat. :D Good I did as could not get a signal at all where we were.

Thanks

New to geocaching, but this app is fantastic on the N900. Most impressed!

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I have a kind of general question on AGTL.

I notice that if I deny GPRS connection (if abroad or there is no signal), AGTL really struggles to get a GPS fix. In fact abroad it failed after waiting about 10 minutes.
To get a fix abroad I had to start Ovi maps, which succeeded eventually in getting a fix, then started AGTL, then closed Ovi. This had me worried for a while that I couldn't get GPS fix!

But if GPRS connection is active, a GPS fix takes 1 to 2 seconds.

What information is being sent/gathered over GPRS to enable such rapid fix?

My handheld Garmin GPS takes a long time as normal to find a fix, especially if I have driven a long way with it off, so the GPRS is obviously helping a great deal.

Hi!

AGTL only relies on the built in GPS receiver routines, it doesn't send or receive any gps related stuff. It is correct that the phone uses AGPS to get a faster fix (see this forum or google for mor information). This is why there's data send and received.

As OVI maps uses the same routines, it is unlikely that starting it will speed up signal acquisition for AGTL. On the other hand, OVI Maps can sometimes display a fix when AGTL doesn't. This is because AGTL is pickier about the quality of the fix. The first fix is always a very rough estimate of the position based on the current cell tower. As this is useless for geocaching, AGTL filters those fixes out.

I hope this clarifies the situation a bit :-)

spoonbuddy 2010-10-06 14:18

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I didn't think that the application would make a difference to the speed the GPS receiver locks on, but I would be interested if it could make a difference because on the last couple of occasions I've used AGTL I have had to wait quite a while for the GPS to lock on even though I have had network connection enabled.

Assisted GPS (A-GPS) uses GPRS to find out the location from the closest mobile cell towers and information of relative satellite positions to enable the GPS unit to lock on quickly. If the GPS receiver has not moved far it kind of remembers its last location and can lock on pretty quickly without assistance, but if the GPS receiver is moved to a new location it will wait until it has a clear signal before it locks on.

The reply above yours is very helpful.

I did find Ovi helpful with no data connection. As webhamster says, it seems to find a rough fix faster, before a decent fix. The rough fix (I assume) seemed to act as a catalyst to get a decent fix.

Once Ovi was happy, I started AGTL, which found it's fix straight away then, then killed Ovi, and I was in business.

Is there a way to share the openstreet map data between different applications? Eg Cloudgps.

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

I have been searching for a Map application which does not require wifi or 3G connection as downloading data is expensive. Besides, none of the Maps is accurate in my area for me. OVI the worst, it always show my position several to tenth of kilometers from where I am. Mappero and Maep are better but I have to be in a very opened site.

Last night, I browsed the Application Manager and read the description of this AGTL that supports off-line navigation. I downloaded it and tried. For the 1st time, the GPS positioning accurately showed me where I was (at home) but not tenths of km. away in the sea. Except one thing, the arrow of the compass was pointing approx. South instead of North.

This morning when I was riding bus to work, I tried it again. Once I got the GPS locked, I turned off the 3G. The spot showing my position was moving accurately on the off-line map as the bus was moving. However, the arrow of the compass did not point correctly, it kept turning and pointing wrong direction. I suppose it has something to do the GPS of N900.

Thank you for creating this great application.

One question, your application mentions that it supports other maps like Google Map. How can I add Google Map?

The arrow isn't a compass, it is pointing towards the cache that is chosen as target.

I am not talking about the arrow in the map. There is a compass in the GPS page.

Re: [Announce] Advanced Geocaching Tool

There is no hardware compass in the N900 so it uses the GPS and your direction of travel to estimate which way is north. On the compass within AGTL you will see a little sun graphic on the compass, this is also a way to align north but can be a little eratic.
