What I have to say so far with Q Sports Events.

1. This is just a suggestion. I would leave this app for football only. No other sports and rename it to Q Football Updates or something similar. It would be too confusing having every sport there. I would do seperate apps for seperate sports all with the same layout. This is just a suggestion though.

2. App sometimes fails to start. I press on the shortcut I put on the Home Screen, and the app seems to be starting, but never starts.

When it does start, the app starts but then goes back to the home screen for a second and then starts normally. It doesn't annoy me. I don't mind that it goes for a second to home screen. But maybe you'd like to know.

3. RSS / News isn't parsed correctly.

4. I can't stress this point enough...all text needs to be black. I can't see some of it due to the background. The background is nice though. I would keep that.

5. If the app is left idle and the phone locks, the app closes. I am not 100% sure if this is the case. Sometimes the app just closes on itself after some time. I don't know what's causing this. Seems absolutely random.

6. Selecting leagues in the first screen is sometimes confusing. You do not know if the selection worked or not. I would put some kind of large radiobutton to select them. I would also not leave the fields editable. Sometimes double pressing can accidentaly happen. If you want to leave the user with that power I would put an 'Edit' button near 'Add' and 'Remova' that enables double clicking. I would also make text larger so it will be more finger friendly.

6. The scroll bar arrows don't appear on first screen.

7. I would group the world cup games together. Or at least the group Stage together. It is very a bit annoying having Group A-H amongst other leagues. It will take longer to find and scroll to an item you want. This is one of the reasons why I said that this app should be about only football. Sports are so vast. It would be chaotic to ionclude more than one in one app. In the first tab, instead of:
Football (+) you could do example:

Spain (+)
Italy (+)
England (+)
France (+)
Germany (+)
UEFA Champions League (+)
UEFA Europa League (+)
FIFA World Cup (+)
Euro Cup (+)
etc..

Expanding them would be like:

Spain (-)
........La Liga Primera División
........La Liga Segunda División
........Copa del Rey
Italy (-)
........Serie A
........Serie B
........Coppa Italia
England (+)
France (+)
Germany (+)
UEFA Champions League (-)
........Group Stage
........Quarter Final
........Semi Final
........Final
UEFA Europa League (+)
FIFA World Cup (-)
........Qualifying
........Group Stage
........Quarter Final
........Semi Final
........Final
Euro Cup (+)

I also made an icon. If you like it use it. So far great work. The app looks great and functionality is awesome too.

Pantera1989 makes a good point here, definitly worth considering I think!
This way every user only installs the sports he is interested in.
Desktop shortcuts can be created individually for each sport as desired.
And in the end you can create a "Suite App" that provides a screen with all installed sports to choose from.

Pantera, thanks a lot for creating an icon. I like the globe/ball merge idea.
But I fear when the picture is resized to icon size (think 48x48 or 64x64) there will be to much inormation lost to really recognize the desired effect :-(

Live score you can get from this RSS http://www.soccerstand.com/rss/soccer/en/today, but does not have all daily games.

Here are a 64x64 and 48x48 versions. The 64 looks good. The 48 is not bad but that's the best I could do.

1) Download the file provided by Magnuslu: QSportsEvent v0.0.4 to your PC
2) Send the file to your N900 via Bluetooth
3) N900 asks where you want to save it ("Open when saved" is already checked...)
4) When saved installation starts in HAM
5) Have fun testing :D

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Reflektorfalke can you make a standalone application soccer live score application, where you can look live score, results
for today and yesterday and scheduled games.
In applications must be an option for refresing interval and url from where you can grab the results.
I can help with know-how about soccer results, design and i can make some scripts in PHP which can grab data from web sites.

No Boomer, I can“t, as I am no developer I can not create such an app, unfortunately :(

This was the bad news and now the good news:
Magnuslu has all the features you mentioned planned for QSportsEvent :D

- Live Scores and results can already be checked (Source: SoccerDB, results are updated during games)
- Refreshing interval is planned. Currently considered alternatives are a manual refresh option or maybe even a live score/ticker with push feature (depending on available source)
- Switching between matchdays - previous and future - is also planned

Your offer to support is appreciated, just follow the thread. I am sure Magnuslu will let us know when and where he needs help, just as he did before :)

I think the list of events and leagues supported by SoccerDB is quite impressive... Which events are you missing?

Unfortunately the decision for a data source depends not only on available leagues/events, but also on technical and legal issues.
In the end the decision which source is used has to be made by Magnuslu as he is the developer and it is his app.

Yes, its good, but dont have ALL events live, and it's not so easy to grab databa because they have a very big HTML pages, and can take a lot of time to grab data live.

Ok, never heared about Brasil - Gaścho :D
As said before, Magnuslu has to decide which source he thinks is best.
I doubt it is possible to find a source that supports every single league/event worldwide to make everyone happy, not to say is usable and legal :(

Haha, I think the legal way is the better way ;)

But you may want to ask Magnuslu if he is willing to change the data source and you can contact futbol24 if they want to support Magnuslu and let him access their data. There might be a chance as there is an iPhone app already...

Yes! I'm just uploading a Diablo version to Extras-Devel so hopefully it should be there soon. Only install it if you see version 0.0.4. That one should not have any PR1.2/Qt4.6 issues as the Fremantle version has, so it should be OK. Let me know how if and how it works. If it looks very different from the Fremantle version, please upload some screenshots. I have no way of testing Diablo.

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Thanks everyone for the overwhelming response! I read every single comment and will plan future releases around them. Forgive me for not replying to every single one of them... I want to spend more time on the app :). Some comments though:

I want the app to be sports-generic. I'm (almost) as big an ice-hockey fan as a football fan. So far, I have found no data source for other sports (well, haven't really looked either...), so it might become a football only app anyway...

The choice of 'live' data provider hinges on two factors:
1. Legality of use. I know there are loads of places where I could parse information such as 'live scores', but if they don't explicitly allow me to use it, I won't.
2. Cost of making use of it (at the moment, I only consider free sources, but that can change in the future). The ones I have contacted charge EUR750 a month and up.
There are four ways around that.
A) Find a way to get 'live scores' from SoccerDB. I know the data is there...
B) turn this into a paid app (that'll be my last option, the way I look at it now. Maybe only pay for a 'live score' version of it?),
C) Find other means of funding the data feed (e.g., ad links, but I seriously doubt I could ever get close to the amounts necessary).
D) Someone makes a huge donation :)

As for the issues with the app, I think I have to pay some serious attention to the 'auto-shutdown' issue. Without solving that, it will never get acceptance by the larger community and no feature I add will ever outweigh that... The problem I have resolving it is that it happens when the app is doing absolutely nothing, so I assume it is some resource issue... I have some (small) hope that it is due to PR1.1/Qt4.5, so maybe it will be solved all by itself with PR1.2, but I'll look into it anyway.

I've seen iFooty for the iPhone. It uses soccerway as data source. More importantly, it costs $1.99 (I think) and probably has 1,000,000+ users... :(

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

It looks really nice on Diablo (N81).
Great graphics and it appears as if all options are working.

BUT It seems to crash after just 20-30 secs or so. No error message. It just shuts down.

Also, if selecting 'Import Event' the window that appear now can't be closed (it's just a ? - no X or 'Close' option).

Anyway, the shutting down after 30 secs or so is of course the most serious, initial bug.

Yeah. That's Maemo 5 style. Here you just tap outside the window and it will close. Anyway, at the moment there is no reason to go to Import Event as the db that comes with the installation comes with all the necessary data.

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

I need your help to confirm an observation I've made. I launched QSportsEvent from the terminal window, and it hasn't crashed in hours... To do it, just launch X Terminal and type 'qsportsevent' (without the quotes, of course). Note! Don't press the Add/Remove buttons in the Favourites tab as that can cause the app to crash for another reason (in version 0.0.4 the installed Db is read only, so no updates are possible).

Ok the app launched. I think you are on to something here. The app didn't exit. I tried leaving it idle, use it and leaving it idle, and use it a lot. It didn't crash.

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

I launched Qsportsevent from the browser (Diablo) about 10 minutes ago.
Left it idle - and it's still running. You might well be onto something here :)

One 'bug' maybe: The scroll-bar on the right is only available to me in full-screen mode. Not a big deal though.

52 days to FIFA :)

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Call for help!

I'm planning to provide a default url to 'news' about the most common leagues (England, Italy, Spain, Germany, France, ...). Can you please suggest what I should use? Even though I'm only going to include one url for each league, feel free to provide more and people can have a choice as to which one to use.

Please provide the information in the following format:

Code:

0|Football|England|Premier League|http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/eng_prem/default.stm
As already has been mentioned, one issue would be what content language the URL should refer to. My take is to use the 'national' language of the league (i.e., Italian for Serie A) as that's probably going to be mostly used. For 'International', I guess we should go for English. Remember, it will be possible to enter anything else, so this will only be the initial default value!

One challenge is to get especially RSS feeds nicely rendered in the embedded webbrowser of the app (webkit). I might have to hunt for some CSS/XSL that works for most... Any pointers for that will also be appreciated...

stobbsc 2010-04-19 15:23

Re: FIFA World Cup App ?

Here is the official site for the English Premier league:
http://www.premierleague.com/page/Home/0,,12306,00.html

Not sure if that means it's better than the bbc site but that's just another option if you need it.
I think the bcc side is good for live in game updates but for stats and stuff the premierleague I find is better.

Do you think you could provide 48x48 and/or 64x64 versions of these? I'll try them out and see what they look like in the app.
