on a different note if anyone knows how to use git and push to repos and has some free time to teach me how to id appreciate it as i cant work it out - am trying to up some repos of my source. throw me a pm if you can help their :)

I presume that you will spend most of your time getting to know the N900 and it's functionality before you start working on porting Android but when you do, please list all your steps to get Android booting so that we can follow by doing the same on our N900's

Thanks!

Congratulations! Very Envious as the very earliest I can look at is October, and even then may be tricky as Three have said they are not going to offer it.

Hope you enjoy it Steve , and don't forget about us poor folk!

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

First of all, I tested nitdroid earlier, and I concluded that it was unusable as of today, I thought that it was WAY to slow, and that my n810 must be to underpowered to run android. Then I read this article and later this one.

I then dusted of my n810 once more, reformatted the sd card, (a 1 gb this time) deleted the gigabyte swap partition, and created a 32 MB swap partition (the swap partition used to be 1 GB on its own on my last install) And voila, it's quicker and snappier.

Please drop the swap, android isn't designed to use swap, it will work for the built in processes, but it will actually be counterproductive with the apps you install on the device.

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

Also, where is the home button? It's not possible to end apps without this button:-P

And is it possible to use the lock switch as a lock button?

My n810 has a scandinavian layout, is there anything I can contribute so you can add a scandinavian language option on the physical keyboard?

Could the problem with storing time, and some settings be a permissions problem?

Great work by the way, I really like it:-)

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

permissions possibly, home button seems to of gon AWOL on donut - looking at it when i get a sec, dont know about your device but my n800 hardly ever uses swap currently.

great job dj_steve! hope you are enjoying the n900 as much as i am.

as android development progresses i'm sure it will be a great boon to the access of apps that we're able to utilise. i for one am looking forward to using android forex charting apps on the n900! would be great as there are no such apps available for the n900 yet.

keep up the great work!

Great work so far :)
As I'm sure you know, the Motorola Milestone / Droid uses the exact same SoC, graphics and all. Even if the SGX userspace part is closed source, I assume we could just "borrow" it from the Milestone's firmware?

dj_steve 2010-05-05 06:35

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

ive heard of that. having issues gettin my 900 to work with a diff kernel at min. still workin on it though

ok been browsing around looking for a milestone rom today, found one but im trying to work out how to extract a smg image now lol

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

Any chance i can just partition the internal memory instead, because i can't quite see the point in buying an sd card, with all the memory space available.

dj_steve 2010-05-05 13:11

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

probably will be unable to since its flash based though it may be possible its not something im going to look at myself - yet

linuxaddict 2010-05-05 15:09

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

Well can't i just use the partition for music, photos and video files etc and just partition that, surely that should be possible as i have a partition manager and that gives me access to do this and i am referring to the N900 :)

dj_steve 2010-05-05 16:44

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

if you can finc a way to partition it as ext 2/3 feel free to let me know and ill add it to list of things to look at

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

is this still the latest experience on the n900? Has anyone gotten it to be more usable or get at least that far with a 2.x build?

dj_steve 2010-05-06 19:08

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

i got my n900 to that point to, looks like a single kernel module stops android booting though i aint sure which one - anyone any ideas. also touchscreen is about as much use currently as a fire with no firewood
(aka not very

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

well isnt there a verbose option for the boot-menu....verbose should help finding out where the kernel panic is happening...

dj_steve 2010-05-06 19:53

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

not that im aware of, could be wrong like ?

lohiaprateek 2010-05-06 19:58

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

well but the video distributed on youtube etc...shows a verbose mode...whether the video is authentic or not i;m not sure..

dj_steve 2010-05-06 19:59

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

the video by bdogg is how it shows up but once android kicks to gfx mode is when it dies

well but u write here..that one module stops android from booting...so...i assumed a verbose mode would help

dj_steve 2010-05-06 20:01

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

yes im assuming a module does but it doesnt crash until when android would normally show the android load image

Is anything dumped to /var/log/*

Perhaps you can read the microsd filesystem's logs on your pc?

dj_steve 2010-05-06 20:03

Re: [Android] NITDroid V2 Development Topic

ill look at that, about to build a new kernel to try though

You basically need to connect your n900 to a router via wi-fi then install ssh on the N900 and ssh on an PC/Laptop thats connected via wi-fi to the same router with an Linux os, next you find your ip address in the terminal of the n900 and go into the terminal on your Linux desktop and type ssh root@whatever the ip address of your n900 is, hit enter and type the password you typed in when you install ssh on the n900, then basically follow this guide by
clicking here looking at changing MyDocs to ext3.:D

Does this help at all, I've tried this guide and it works minus the n900 cant store images or files but you can install loads more apps:D this is due to it doesn't recognize the partition format, but all you would have to do, in my opinion is just sort the partition table out, so you split the partition where MyDocs is into one with the format ext3 and another one to FAT format, now i would of done what i have suggested but i was wondering if we couldn't some how just get the n900 to support the ext3 format for storing photo's, files, etc.

Code:

Note the camera needs a FAT partition to store images and video.

You dont need a GNU/Linux operating system to SSH into the N900, you can as well do it from Mac OS X (via the built in Terminal.app) and you can as well do it from a Windows box, running an SSH/FTP application that has a built in terminal emulator like WinSCP.

Last word is, doing it from Mac OS X is as seamless as doing it from GNU/Linux.

yea i use putty on windows :) not so worried about losing space on internal partition yet, as my plans are to allow android to boot on like a 1 or 2gb microsd and mount the internal storage as sd card and use a bit of apps to sd magic maybe :) id love to see an android native device beat 20+gb of apps storage LOL. anyone knowif its possible to get the 900 to directly boot from sd rather than via the internal flash/bootmenu - i suspect kernel is loading the tsc2005.ko module instead of using the modded driver ive included uin kernel
