Of course not, they shouldn't have to. If the N900 skype module wasn't so limited, it would be able to talk to older Mac/Linux clients exactly as the windows client does.

Imagine if MS Word 2007 had only read & written .docx files and not been backwards-compatible with the .doc format. Cries of "Microsoft can't make anyone upgrade" or "problem isn't with Word 2007" would have sounded a little lame.

There will probably be financial or technical reasons why the N900 client is so limited in its compatibility (as I've speculated) but we haven't been told them.

As that's the blindingly obvious thing to do, I'd assume that the N900 didn't have the CPU horsepower to do realtime VP7 encode/decode, whereas H.264 can be offloaded to hardware.

Also the proprietary VP7 has traditionally been Linux-hostile, but with video calling on the newer Linux skype client I doubt that was the obstacle.

Oh what a pity!
So we have to wait for a "Skype update" to solve the problem?

Most of my friends and all my family is using Skype for Linux (some Skype for Mac) to skip from painful Windows PC life...
Now Windows strikes back!

Can anyone tell me in general why a Linux Smartphone's functions are so much a problem to work on a Linux PC?
Same Problem we have with Nokia Maps Updater, Nokia Suite, and so on. Maybe Nokia does not think enough Linux-minded?

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

Is it just me or is the front facing camera really dark? I'm in a classroom and I just tried a sample call to see what the quality looked like and it was really dark. I'm in a well-light room, so I'm wondering if its just me...

I guess it doesn't like fluorescent lights or the sun. When I'm inside the building its really dark, so on break I tried it outside and the screen was literally white-washed. I thought Nokia would have the driver issues(or whatever the problem is) solved by now with the official support of Skype video. I'm a little disappointed that its so touchy with lighting.

I'm also having the same problem as the previous 3 posters. I can see myself when making the video call, but the person on the other end doesn't even recieve a request(I made a testing Account to make sure I had an up-to-date client, so no issue there). Has anyone had any CONSISTENT success with this update?

I also tried Skype video this weekend with my parents, who have the most recent Windoze version. Didn't work. I did get video from Dad, but it was stuck on a single frame so useless. At their end, they said their skype client said "initialising video" the whole session. I could see myself though and the image wasn't all green like in the mirror app.

I should mention that they had initiated the session.

Useless, so I switched to my Linux desktop with an ancient version of Skype and no problem.

I have tried video calls between N900 and several Symbian Fring-phones (over 3g with good connections). No video, sometimes very poor audio with robot voice. Is (Symbian) Fring compatible with N900 video calls ?

Calls between PC and N900 works fine mostly :)

I have just gotten a N900 yesterday (so excited!!!) and my bro in law has had an evo for week or two.

Just tried to do video call using fring on evo and skype on N900, sadly it does not work. video call shows up and when we place it we both just only see our own video in the small box.

oh btw hi everyone i just signed up and i'm so excited about my N900.

Just letting you know my experience this week.
My girlfriend has been on tour with her orchestra to Minsk and South Korea and we decided to use skype to keep in touch - she's never used skype before and I, only for calls. I signed her up before she left and much to my surprise and delight, it worked flawlessly. Several hours (over a couple of weeks) of video calls initiated by either of us and great quality too on both wifi and over the 3 network. Just Brilliant.

Do you have the indian firmware on the phone? because afaik, the indian firmware disabled skype on the device. Your best bet is to flash it with the global version...

I don't have friends in front of their Skype all the time. It would be nice if our N900 can run 3G video conf. Does Fring overcome that? Any suggestions (besides asking all my friends switch to N900?)

It seems there is a new beta available for mac that bumps up the Skype version to v5.0, can someone try it and report back if it enables video calling between N900 and Mac?

http://www.skype.com/intl/en/get-sky...r/macosx/beta/

EDIT: I can confirm it works for N900 -> Mac Skype video calling :-)

This is also a problem with iPhone 4 and iPod Touch 4. Here's hoping Skype fixes it. As I understand it, the iPhone is capable of using h.264 but the client doesn't use it. Apparently FaceTime does.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I think its hilarious that we've all tried this with no success. Basically tried video chatting between the N900 and iPhone 4 as well, over 3G as well as WiFi to no avail. :(

only voice chat would work, and even that was troublesome.

Both Video and voice on the N900 does not work for me. I can hear the other party but they simply can't hear me... Anybody else experiencing this?

Descalzo 2011-01-24 20:31

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

No, my voice works great! Usually just like on the phone. The problem lies with the H.264 codec. iPhone doesn't. Last I checked, only the Windows and N900 versions use H.264. If anyone knows different, please let us know.

This knowledge doesn't really help us, though, unless there's a way we can find out which codec the iPhone 4 uses and we start using it on the N900.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

It really starts to sound like some typical iPhone control issue - setting up with Skype for the attractive feature, but specifying that the only mobile users that will work are other iPhone users.

Skype 5.0 for Mac OS X was released this week. Does this fix the video calling issue between N900 and OSX?

Descalzo 2011-01-29 03:47

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

I can verify that Skype 5 for OSX works with video chat with N900. That was a very poorly-constructed sentence.

Hi! Anyone tried, and managed to get video call working between the N900 and other Nokia device (Symbian ^3)?

I'm trying to connect my N900 with a C6-01, but could only get voice call and IM. Sadly, the video call could not work. The C6-01 has a front camera for 3G video call. Any ideas?

Hey Joseph, I might be wrong but I thought Symbian phones could only receive voice calls and IM chats.. No option for video calls..or did they just implemented it?

@BluesLee: Are you sure this is working? I installed skype 2.2 on my laptop yesterday and tried to do a videocall between it and my N900, but it didn't work. Or did you have to modify your N900s config before it worked? With the stock settings it doesn't seem to work right.

I believe you need the beta.

Re: Video Calls with Skype N900

Yeah I know, but 2.2 is the Beta (2.2.0.25 to be correct, thats the version I have installed), as there is no Final 2.2 out yet. I also have all the features mentioned in the changelog, so I'm pretty sure it's the right version. But sadly still no Videocalls between N900 and the linux client (at least for me).

It did work for me, between Nokia N900 PR1.3 and Skype 2.2.0.25 running on Ubuntu 10.04. It took several attempts, but I did get bidirectional video.
