A bit of old post so sorry for the bump. You can still access the symbols and such, if you press Fn+Ctrl from the hardware-keyboard. Don't know what I'm talking about? Here's a pic:

Those keys are on the far-left side of the N900.

To continue on this topic: Would it be possible to have both landscape and portrait keyboard? Switching between these could be made either by widget or dropdown menu button (like with qwerty12's keyboard layout switcher) or ideally automatically (after all, the phone knows in which direction it is held because it can rotate some applications).

(sorry, I have read the topic in small bits so I can't remember if this subject is already covered )

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

There is a portrait keyboard, it just isn't the same one as comes programmed by default. There's also both commands and packaged widgets (I think) earlier in this thread for switching between one keyboard and the other.

The main point right now is this vkb isn't even that finished yet. As you could've noticed from the screen shot, if this stuff gets finished/updated any time soon, we will have a damn workable keyboard for both portrait and landscape.

I would really discourage you from driving and typing at the same time!

Walking or standing on the bus while typing, however, is a joy with the new portrait keyboard (even if it is not finished yet).

Check out the first post. ;)

I would really like to have a full QWERTY keyboard in portrait mode as well, like the one you find in Opera Mobile. Kudos to w00t and others for finding this and giving us the oppurtunity to test it out!

Is the QWERTY keyboard a part of this yet? I can't find any sort of settings for the app.

hmmm:rolleyes:.....i didnt mean am texting all the time when am driving:eek:....

But at some times like when we need to type a "OK" or "Call u later","in 5 mins" kind of very short msgs(which i dont think will effect our driving).....a portrait keyboard is very useful...

Using the phone always in landscape mode is also a problem for many users....

Hey but this in n900/maemo....we can do any thing right???:)

why don't you add pseudo-T9 support like in FastSMS application?! that would be great!!!

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

Is there still a possibility to have a switch to turn on and off the portrait keyboard?

godofwar424 2010-07-09 20:18

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

What is going on with this project? Have you guys given up or just busy with other things? I really think a QWERTY feature should be implemented into it at least then we have a more usable portrait function,

T9 would be AMAZING but the multi tap input is painful and unpractical to use :( so QWERTY is needed :)

coz this application is useful for me when i am travelling. then when im just at h0me,i prefer to use the default qwerty keyboard in landscape. but if ever there is a qwerty keyboard in portrait, thats the best! install-uninstall-install.... gets?

you must have huge difficulties understanding metaphors?

e: I'll help you a bit:

what difference does it make to install potentially dangerous software from extras-devel (@work) and some 3rd party repository (@home)?

Mentalist Traceur 2010-07-18 16:00

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

Ricardo, just enable extras-devel, DON'T update anything until you disable Extras-Devel, go to the downloads in app-manager, find "Portrait-Keyboard", install that, and then disable extras-devel. You're more at risk having someone slip you bad software by asking for links then if you go into Maemo.org's official repositories, I think.

As for everyone asking about what's going on with this project: Read the first post. There's a link in it to where it's being worked on:

http://gitorious.org/hildon-portrait-keyboard

Latest change was Sunday, June 27th. So it's sorta stagnated, but not long enough to believe that it's not going to get done at all. (Though it does look like a few other people are working on it more than the original posters. *Shrug*)

Agreed!
The opera portrait keyboard layout/design is the best.

Mentalist Traceur 2010-07-18 16:40

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

One, to counter something the quote said: Opera's keyboard is not perfect. It's a pain in the *** getting to some common symbols and last I checked (earlier this week) it still uses the caps-lock approach to capitalization, instead of "one click = shift; two clicks = caps-lock". That's not perfection. That's being good enough to be the best, but given that it's the only browser with a full qwerty keyboard in portrait mode, that's not saying a lot.

Two, Opera's portrait keyboard has been brought up before in this very thread. And looking at your quote, I wouldn't be surprised if it was you who originally brought it up in this thread.

Three, there's already a QWERTY version in the works, case in point, look at the screenshots a few pages back in this thread. Looking at the project's website I'm not completely able to tell if it's actually been merged into the original's code, but the point is it's there, and honestly, it looks better (though similar enough that if Opera's keyboard is perfect for you, it won't be too different) than Opera's keyboard in my opinion based on the screenshots.

does it do portrait qwerty ?

Mentalist Traceur 2010-07-18 16:58

Re: [Announce] portrait-keyboard: Portrait-friendly system-wide keyboard

Really? Read the thread. Or, you know, my previous post: "there's a QWERTY version in the works". If it was finished, it would not be referred to as "in the works". If it was already in the current version of portrait-keyboard available in extras-devel, I would not have, in context of the last two posts before mine, referred to it as "in the works". And even though misinterpretation is understandable, unless you misunderstood the entire thread after taking the time to read all of it, it won't be taken to kindly by most people.

Two page qwerty, portrait and landscape modes, working nicely on my n900 (screenshots are from scratchbox though). Key layout is still under rework, its hard fitting things in nicely with hildon/gtkbuttons. (not to mention time to work on things).

progress is looking good eternal. But I still think the key layout need a bit more work and I hope it supporting other languages other than english.

I'm not sure whether you're talking about me but I tried bringing this idea up in another thread in vain. http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=55731

I just saw the progress on this app for the portrait keyboard and I have to say I'm impressed. I didn't mean to say that Opera's keyboard is perfect and to be honest I don't even use it but I just liked that there was a good portrait keyboard.

Anyway good job on this app.. Thumbs up

Hi!

I'm a new member here and i'm wondering if there is any news about upcoming updates?

Also I have a problem. If I type something in microb browser with portrait-keyboard and then I press enter it doesn't too anything else than move cursor to one row down, is there anything you can do about that?

Thanks for your help

PLEASE HELP ME WITH MY KEYBOARD

( why the mess up with the already messed up e.g the option more was much better then the rearranging of icons in this pr1.2 ) we should have folder option in our GUI like iphone's folder feature, no offense to n900 user coz I love my phone anyway

Uninstall the software and wait for it to come to Extras/Maemo.org. There's no point for you to test/use the app, if you can't even seem to understand the fact, that Extras-Devel is not for regular users and the software in there is not stable nor complete.

Period.

And by the way, we can rearrange folders, although I probably shouldn't even tell this to you. You can do it either manually or with ApMeFo (though it's again in Extras-Devel/-Testing so I'd suggest you stay away from it, to not trouble the developer or the community).

The software : ApMeFo
Doing it manually : part #1 (the whole thing), part #2 (troubleshooting), part #3 (extra)

No idea if this was reported up to now or no: the use of the backspace key doesnt seem to reset the repeated-press timeout

Press 9 9 ( see W then X displayed)
Press backspace
Press 9
Expected: W
Got: Y

I liked old keyborad(pr1.1) but than i got used to keybaord on pr1.2 and i think it's okay, just matter of getting used to it. in my little opinion i would leave it like that just add portrait, but as i said it's my little opinion.
