I get 8MBps d/l speeds on 3.5G, but there's a 1GB bandwidth limit so I'll wait till I'm back home, shouldn't take long.
Torrents? Well, I'm not the only one using this connection and ra**** it to upload a file would surely cause problems. There's a 7GB limit on this one too, so just give me some time, the project isn't dead.

Just wanted to note that if you're using an ADSL (not a wireless) line in Jordan the system that calculates the bandwidth usage doesn't include the amount of uploaded data only the downloaded.

hope this was helpful :) .

Yeah, don't upload it now. A couple of weeks wait for a working Ubuntu image. Is well worth it.

But could you give us an update? What are the main obsticles now? What is working and not?

Is it possible to run this a la easy debian?
E.g. install stuff to image file, mount it and chroot to it?

Coffee 2010-08-05 21:45

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

Would be great if installed in such a manor it could be installed as stand alone and booted.

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

Is there any instructions for this using MultiBoot (Jay-C/NITdroid boot).
I could not get this to install. When I get to the chroot section on my N900 (bin/bash part) is fails each and every time. Was the same for Fedora (n900). Can anyone help with this?
Just can't get the chroot part to work  Feel like I'm missing something but I have followed all instructions to the letter :(

From here on is where it fails: (I understand I don't write Mohammad and use my own login)

chroot /mnt/ubuntu /bin/bash
useradd -m <replace with your username here> (e.g useradd -m mohammad)
# fill in details as you wish.
visudo
# Edit the file and add your username to sudoers using visudo
# Example (replace my username with yours)
# # User privilege specification
# root ALL=(ALL) ALL
# mohammad ALL=(ALL) ALL

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

I have been peeking at the ofono project and though i understand very little they have come a long way. Although it might be better to wait for this project i am not ruling it out. It should soon be possible if not possible right now.

Could you explain better how to install ubuntu please? Maybe a n00b guide! not all of us know about linux

kingoddball 2010-08-10 23:24

Re: [WIP] Ubuntu 9.10 on the N900

I'm in the same boat as Zylor. I need a little clarification.
I can not do the chroot part (on N900), am I missing any packages on my N900?? It could never get it working (PR 1.1 or 1.2) it was the same with Fedora, too.

No problem for dual or trial boot (i got nitdroid, mer & meego), but for me ubuntu 9.10 don't boot at startup it's just do nothing (white screen with "boot on mmcblk1p2..." nothing else). So i'm waiting for a new image for testing.
What version of netbook launcher running ? the efl 2D version ?
And what about sgx library ? it's present ?
(sorry for my poor english)

@Honza broken pointer is fixed in the latest rootfs ;)
@tobyax multiboot works fine, r&d still needed.

No one waited for a how to I see :)

Permission errors are because the image was tarred as root, and should be unpacked as root, unfortunately, permissions don't stay the same, wait till I post instructions for a fix on that.
As for the mouse pointer, it is indeed fixed, the module is loaded from /opt and the stock one is unloaded, however, the module is compiled for omap1, which means it will load on the stock kernel and similar ones only.

If you're using a kernel based on kernel power, try backing up the module in /opt somewhere and then put the one here in /opt instead, http://mohammadag.xceleo.org/public/...les/tsc2005.ko

noob friendly instructions soon, might follow the NITDroid way of releasing rootfs's, through patches, major releases will be through whole rootfs-s :)

Ok, now it works! :D

What about "tar --preserve-permissions -xvjf file.bz" for the permissions error?

Oh never knew of that option, thanks :)
I'm out for +4h tomorrow, so I might silently update the rootfs

Ok, the "--preserve-permissions" flag doesn't work... :(

@MuhammadAG will there at some point in the near future be a workaround so you wont have to enable RnD mode? I would love to tribble boot maemo/NITdroid/ubuntu ;)
