Re: [Council] Maemo 5 gets community OS updates

It appears I have to remove modified hildon manager and the supercool nine screens and desktop+ and desktop-swithcher to use this.

I'm not willing to give up those benefits.

"apt-get install qtm-maemo-metapackage dsme-thermalobject-surface libqt4-translations" marks them as manually installed

This fixed things, thanks!

This is what my preference file in /etc/apt/preference looks like

Code:

Package:

Pin-Priority: 1001

Now when i try apt-get -f upgrade in X-terminal i get

invalid record in the preference file,no Package header

What am i doing wrong? Sorry if i sound stupid

Isn't that included in the release to have more than those 4 Nokia desktops?
It persisted on my device, please post if there are any blocking issues from you package managing apt-get.

erm...

Says it all, no expression after Package is invalid for apt-get. Remove the block of three lines for modified-hildon-desktop or if this is just the whole content of this file remove it .
I also edited my above post to be more precise.

You are right, sorry for the error. Should be
Code:

dpkg --configure -a
I edit the above instructions as well!

edit the last post

i did

dpkg --configure -a instead and it seems to work... now FAM works perfectly.

THanks so much

hmmm... looks like i cannot patch the desaturize patch without replacing the hildon-desktop update by the SSU...

I really liked the desature option instead of blur

Did you also notice the valuable piece of information http://talk.maemo.org/showpost.php?p...2&postcount=90 to get rid of autoremove of vital packages?

yup. I posted the screenshots wondering what they were

mikecomputing 2011-01-30 12:07

Re: [Council] Maemo 5 gets community OS updates

Those SSU does this also include updates of Qt and qt-components/meego integration in Maemo5?

or is it "only" bugfixes to core apps?

Just curious :)

Why are you bothered? This file is just for installing or updating packages in an unusual way to overcome dependencies of meta packages.

It's nice to see the community one-uping Nokia in support, thanks a lot guys. I wil be trying this in a couple of weeks, as I need a stable-as-can-be phone right now. I'm not a power, or even very experienced, user, but I'll try to test this. Also, I could take up tranlating whatever you need for a greek version of the update.

First unistall all hildon patch... Then try to unpin package and upgrade by xterminal whit : apt-get -f upgrade.

If this doesn't works reinstall PR 1.3 firmware by ovi suite and then you will be able to do the community update.

I realised after installing this update from the CSSU, and after fixing a few things i.e. FAM, uninstalling desaturize desktop (SOB SOB SOB), and having needed to reinstall certain things that were automatically removed by autoremover (glad that it could resolve), suddenly, I realised there were many apps that were 'kept back' and not upgraded...

how to work around this or is it not important?

Re: The in-development Maemo 5 Community SSU

Given the issues listed on this thread what benefits, at the moment rather than in the future, does installing the CSSU bring, in terms of using the phone? As the wiki doesn't seem to list many worthwhile changes?

In other words it is worthwhile installing the CSSU at the moment?

Though it might be worthwhile for some, it is still a public testing phase. If you are not familiar with debugging apt-get related issues or even are unwilling to reflash the whole device, simply let others get their hands dirty! There will not always be a helping hand in here interested enough.

DId you apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade? Which repos do you have enabled?

Sorry, but it works, at least on my device. Check the status of the configure process please.
There might also be necessary to reboot, but i am not a 100% sure about this.

It seems Fapman is a bit overzealous in always running the autoremove step before installing anything. Thanks to whoeveryou for raising #11831 which deals with this issue.

Probably. Although having something which binary patched existing applications (such as Ovi Maps) is feasible; but if it's a binary patch it doesn't require the level of "trust" Application Manager gives it and these could go through the normal Extras process.

As noted in the announcement, the patches which deliver those can be integrated into the CSSU hildon-desktop the moment steps up to make the gconf-configurable.

This is #11813. The workaround is:

1) Open X Terminal
2) Type:
Code:

sudo gainroot
gconf-schemas --register hildon-desktop-keys.schemas

The fix is in gitorious and just needs pushing. But obviously this proves that the CSSU testing repo is doing its job and finding bugs that prevent it immediately going to a "stable" repo and promoted/pushed as a path for all N900 users.

Well I decided to try this Community OS update and everything went fine except for this "CTRL+ backspace" problem, and this workaround worked perfectly.

Instead of "CTRL+ backspace" I use most of the time the Camera focus short press to show Dashboard (thanks to Shortcutd) and after the workaround, it is working again.

I don't know if it is just my perception, but I find my transitions faster. I've been using Plastic Dark Black theme custom transitions for a while and they seem faster/smoother for me.

@ MAG

Can you also add the Modest portrait patch & the settings menu portrait patch that you made some time ago to the Community SSU?

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=63291 (Modest Portrait)

http://talk.maemo.org/showthread.php?t=63316 (Control Panel Portrait)

Also is it possible to make a patch to make the Conversation app to portrait??

This sentence requires something to be comprehensible. Let me guess:

"...the moment [someone?] steps up to make the gconf-configurable."

Likewise no issues and my phone also seems snappier but perhaps just it's had it's weekly reboot!

That's a settings option in FApMan. It autoremoves unused packages or something like that. It's on by default but can be disabled through the UI easily. I personally like it - people should really learn to look through the settings options of their software before indiscriminately running it.
