hey Confusedfella. Have you checked out Prismic wallpaper manager for the N900. it is a background application for the N900. The are hundreds of backgrounds to choose from, in various categories. I did a review on it about 6 months ago on my website.

Realy useful app, MAG! One problem thou, it shows up while I use the pone app as well. You should make another parameter, if you hold down the proximity sensor for like over 5 sec, it should cancel launching the media bar, this way it wont show up, when the phone is at your ear.

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Anybody else had the mediabar freeze on them and just remain stuck in the left hand corner rather than the right corner, requiring a reboot? I assume I had one to many apps open and an incomming phone call was too much for the processor to cope with but nothing else froze bar the mediabar.

Apart from this the mediabar seems more intrusive somehow compared to my old 5800, appering when ever my hand goes anywhere near the proximty meter, rather than when I want it to appear as it did on the 5800.

I wonder if there is anyway it can only be made to appear when a finger is held over the meter for say a second or more?

You can change the proximity time-out in the settings (located in the 'general' section of the Maemo settings screen). This determines for how long the sensor needs to be activated before the menubar appears (in milliseconds). If you want the menubar to appear after one second, set the proximity time-out to 1000. :)

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

This app cause my hildon-desktop and hildon-home become unstable and frame dropped. Uninstalled it and my device feel healthier.

MohammadAG 2011-01-15 21:01

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

How exactly does it make them unstable? No, it's not the app, I'm sure of that as both have no idea it's even there.

The 5800 had a button, not a sensor.

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Hey Mohammad - very impressed with this extremely useful widget. The simplicity, quality and elegance of the concept are the biggest appeals for me.

Good to see ideas sparking from others, but I'm firmly of the mind that the original concept is usually the best and suggest that MediaBar is close to optimal now - if too many options are catered for the beauty and simplicity of a great idea can be lost.

That said, some of the ideas & suggestions above open new prospects that could form the basis of alternative/parallel apps.

Thanks for your work on this, Mohammad.

Will movable mediabar be implemented?
If you need graphics, tell me what you want.

Can't wait for the next 3 updates :P

thanks MohammadAG!

I assumed the other apps open overloaded the processor and the mediabar just didn't like it, however it has stuck open a few times but today when I had a few more apps open was the first time I needed a reboot. My question was asking if anybody else had the same issue, if nobody else has it must just be my N900.

Until I have just checked I nver realised it was a button I alwauys assumed it was the proximty meter before today!! Anyway It does make you wonder why Nokia ever did use a seperate button just for this one shortcut when your idea is far simpler.

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

would be nice to somehow toggle the mediabar though the camera button.
Maybe somehow this could be implemented in shortcutd ?

Feature request.

Can you put an option say: keep cover the proximity to display MBar. Once the finger or hand move away from the priimity the MBar disappear as well. So to show it, it must be covered all the time for the Xbar to appear all the time.

I think it's more handy than cover for specific time and show up.

Maxx

@maxx: do you mean when the proximity sensor is close then show media bar and if it open hide the media bar?

thats the setting i want too....

@NightShift79: those are some very nice mock ups would be cool to have mediabar get to that stage

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Mmm, there was an update for Mediabar today, which I ran successfully. After a few minutes use I encountered a problem with mediabar. It got stuck permanently on the top left of the screen . I couldn't end task it or remove it and it just sat there regardless of which screen I was on (I have nine desktops).

So I rebooted my N900 and it's still rebooting 5 hours laters (constantly)....

No finger pointing, just wondering if anyone has experienced the same thing? I am about to flash my device. :(
It's not a big deal at all, and I will have the N900 back to normal by lunch time, just wondering if this has been picked up by any others!

Or is there a work around into getting my N900 to stop rebooting. I usually use PUTTY to make changes, is there anything I can remove or edit?

P.S. Strangely it was just after my previous post to ConfusedFella that the problem occured... I had just written that reply on my phone when boom, mediabar jammed.

Yes, I have had the same problem. Mediabar stuck in top left hand corner. Really stuck. I can't do anything. I actually rebooted thinking it would resolve the problem, and now I am stuck in an infinite boot loop. It loads, I see the desktop and before any buttons are clicked or screen touched the N900 reboots.

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Not really the best fix, but flasher-3.5 --enable-rd-mode --set-rd-flags=no-lifeguard-reset will bring it back to life, till you can fix it.

What did you change? These reboots are related to system binaries (hildon-desktop, hildon-home, widgets f'ing both of them up, but this doesn't use any of them).

Had a sleep to think about what changed, and you mentioned desktops, well I have the MaeModder application loaded and had switched on 8 desktops, and tried setting a background for the 8th screen and it didn't work. The screen went black. I tried it a couple of times with different backgrounds with little success. Then I switched off the black screen by going back into MaeModder and setting 7 screens with no backgrounds. That was earlier on in the day. (Of course I had not rebooted the phone yet).

I also updated the TouchSearch App (not sure if this has anything to do with it).

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Updated mediabar with rcg1's patch (thanks!) which allows free placement with the config file, and of course, added those parts to the GUI for easy configuration :)

http://i54.tinypic.com/ejtpa8.jpg

I might implement a drag and drop way to set it.

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

very nice!
patiently waiting for the update. (:

I would also like to se a drag and drop way to position the mediabar.

Do you got some hint, how I can use a single background for the buttons?

MohammadAG 2011-01-16 22:48

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Currently, you can't (unless you edit the code), it's set to be transparent.

NightShift79 2011-01-17 06:42

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

yes, noticed that...
If I try to compile your source with QTCreator (Win7) I face the fact that the package creation failed.

As my knowledge about QT is less to non, I don't know how to fix this. you have a hint?
Do I need to change maybe the makefile or what?

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Got -devel enabled?

@ NightShift79, it should compile fine under Windows I guess, but I've never tried to package anything under windows. Regardless, if you get the mediabar binary, just replace the one in /opt/mediabar/ (no .deb necessary, actually the deb will lack certain things when done with Qt Creator - so again, just replace the binary)

The 5800 had a button, not a sensor.

My Hildon-Desktop and Hildon-home became crazily and spike up the CPU % and also RAM as well. I have no idea why but after I uninstalled it and everything stopped spiking up.

I've tested for a few days though and my cpu usage seems higher even with the device is Idle most of time. 1 day with the Mbar installed, my hildon-home and desktop became a bit hungry and freeze up the system alot. After uninstalled Mbar, my cpu usage is still stable and hildon-home/desktop did not spike up at all for the last 2 days. So I assuming that it is some what conflicting with my libraries on the system.

hmmm, MAG, whats the latest version number? i browsed for the devel repos and downloaded the .deb that was there, did a dpkg -i on version 0.4-5 but i don't see the x, y orientation settings.

MohammadAG 2011-01-17 09:20

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

Your libraries are no different to mine (Qt).
Code:

PID  PPID USER    STAT  RSS %MEM %CPU COMMAND
14945  1118 user    S    8920  3.6  1.6 /usr/bin/hildon-desktop
 9179    1 root    S    1180  0.4  0.9 /usr/sbin/proximityd
12180    1 user    S    6740  2.7  0.5 /opt/mediabar/mediabar

I have less to non knowledge about programming.
At least I got the Nokia SDK and QT Creator installed.
I simply opened your *.pro file with qtcreator and hit run. (other stuff like ex. y Desktop+ and others) compiles right and works.

but not your source. I'm to dumb to check what's going on
It just finished with saying error on packaging somthing couldn't get copied to c:\xxxx\mediabar//user/optmediabar or similar.

on the other hand I tried compiling with madde (mad make and mad qmake)
and madde doesn#t know what to do.

maybe it#s cos there's no makefile in the source of 0.5 ?

anyway i just do it to learn to dev. but I better leave it tu the Gurus!

Thanks MAG:)

it can be a good idea to have blur effect for below open windows when the media bar appears . like when the menu opens due to pressing power key.

Correct my friend. I want it to only show up when it is covered and when it is not it disappears without having to wait for it to go away after setting the time.

** Show song metadata didn't work for me. Broken I should say. Worked once but later stopped working, even after reboots and reinstalls

I think I should supply a manual :P
Metadata is received when you switch songs, metadata only shows when the mediaplayer controls are visible, those controls are only visible if you hold the mediaplayer icon.
Is it that hard? :)

I agree. You should be on the Nokia payroll to continue beefing up Maemo 5. Nokia were basically laughing their heads off taking $500 per N900 then ditching Maemo support less than a year later. Not cool, Nokia, not cool!

yes very hard indeed. lol.

Anyway why not make song metadata display continuously in the MBar? this way we don't have to keep going to back to media player to find out which song we are playing. Also if you can put a widget inside it would be nice.

Scenario:
Browsing website and can't be bother to go back to the onscreen widget and would like to press the proximity sensor and change song or skip the boring song.

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

it's so nice that mediabar ;)
Btw, thx MohammadAG for the compiling tip ;)
now I got it.
http://i55.tinypic.com/15q3jwm.png

I have changed the buttons to "flat". now only the icons are visible.
Upnext Im going to add a nice "bar-ish" background.
As I'm a total dev noob, I would put a label behind the buttons in the .ui and add a pixmap to it.
now add ressource file...

Would this be the right approach ?

Re: [Announce] Media bar for Maemo 5 (XpressMusic-esque)

I have a little problem: I can't save settings. Every time I open Media Bar options menu everything is at its default value, my settings are always discarded. Any idea?

EDIT:
It was just a permissions problem,
chown user.users /home/user/.config/MohammadAG
solved it.
