Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

I've just tried to register a new account.

The verification method is pretty useless for following reasons:
  1. once in four tries the spam bot will be able to guess the picture :D
  2. the number of images in pool is too low, they occur too often.
  3. it is possible to determine which picture is shown rather easily (I will not post it here). PM for more info.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

I still think that maybe:
1)Stop all registrations;
2)Look k at the database, look kinda when did the mass registration started (if any appened - I hope)
3)Unregister everybody from that point on. Not lock accounts - deregister them so that the true ones will be able to register under the same Login again;
4)Install a less bot friendly check;
5)Open registration again.

<satanic>I will start reporting some known trolls around here. Maybe a moderator with hundreds spam reports won't notice and ban them for good :)</satanic>

I'm joking, but it could work

Posting from another account.

Level 1 is pretty close to useless.
Level 2, 3 checks are useless.

Momcilo

Will try to delete this one.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Why not ask device specific questions? Like what's the default homepage of MicroB. Or how many desktops does the N900 have? Or what's the name of the default e-mail app on maemo.

It's too specific for generic spambots to figure and pretty elementary for anyone with a device on his hands.

may be we should disable unregister member to see the thread or subforum

"apon" started 2 hours ago. 64 posts.
If we can't stop bots at the gate with the current forum setup, we either need to limit number of posts per day (for the first week) or look at setting up more mods to remove spam....
this flooding is getting out of hand for sure....

ysss 2011-09-20 00:24

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Definitely need to limit the ability/numbers of new threads that a new user can create.

Even a normal (non spambot) new user has no business creating dozens of new threads upon their acct opening.

Short term strategy is to increase the number of mods.
Long term requires better validation and perhaps delay before first post can be made.

Captcha would help as well. The problem is that person behind this can use his own eyes for registration.

onethreealpha 2011-09-20 00:30

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

it would seem we are definately starved of moderation at this time of day (or night ;) ) so increasing the number will definately help, at least to ban and clean.
I think a restriction on the number of posts would have a positive effect. if the spammers can't get their junk posted quickly, they'll move on to easier pickings......
apon now at 76 posts. this alone shows that the current level of moderators isn;t sufficient. this one should have been wiped over an hour ago....

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

We use VBulletin at Flashkit. Upon signup, initial posts are sent directly to queue for moderation.

There's a spammer, apon I believe, that's up to 71 posts. Seriously.

So now owning a device will be the new requirement? :P I think not. Good try, though.

I'm half expecting apon to show up on this thread and post a sample of his work anytime now, to rub salt upon our helpless wound.

he/she would but is too busy in "games".... now at 86.
WhereTF are the mods? sidebar is now full of nothing but live tv threads. makes for a very enjoyable (dare I say WP-like) experience

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Community, why not have a delete thread button? So after X amount of deletes from the members the thread gets deleted, and at that time a moderator can see if it is credible thread or not. The thread wouldn't get deleted immediately but it wouldn't be able to be looked at,or responed to until a moderator gave it a thumbs up or down.
Just my two cents.

sounds good but there'd be an application to the UN from (dis)abill_uk because he'd never get anything up on the forum:D

What about 'How many Fremantle bugs have status WONTFIX?'. That's a device-specific question that I'm sure you could answer. :D

Well, seeing as how the spammers have taken over, I would like to say that I, for one, look forward to serving our enthusiastically loquacious new overlords.

That's like asking Mr. Owl how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll (tm) Tootsie Pop (tm). Man, I wish I was getting paid for product placement. You hear that, new overlords??

I'm more of a lurker, so yeah the feuds would have to be looked at by a case by case rationale.but atleast let the COMMUNITY try to manage it first, then let the moderators jump in when it goes awry.

That idiot has the whole feed locked up ,HOW IS THIS POSSIBLE??

Better yet, delete the thread after a certain number of votes (of non-new members) and let a moderator reinstate the thread if warranted.

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

user Apon has made 93 posts!!!!! and has joined today!!!

can't we just limit the starting new threads to start after 1 weeks join, and only 1 thread until it checks out, then users can make new threads after that (still within limits) this would also really help on the new users creating new threads without searching making searching for answers even harder.....

EXACTLY!!! Let the moderators decide the number of votes for deletion, based on any type of formula they want ie post/per day ,thanks or whatever!

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

there is functionality for thread rating, maybe someone with some vbulletin know-how can tell us maybe a url where it will sort by last post AND rating AND number of ratings and we communally downrate the spam. just an idea in absence of better authentication or moderation.

It's a play on SEVERAL such similar lines throughout the classic show Lost in Space--often whimpered out by Dr. Zachary Smith.

I am certainly not a spammer and when people resort to calling others disabled, which in itself is morally and rightly so against the law, you should be ashamed of yourself for doing so.

You should definetly get infraction points for that one for sure !.

abill_uk 2011-09-20 02:27

Re: [Request] Help fight spam together!

Between Reggie and Texrat they are doing an excellent job of getting rid of the bots on here.

It just goes to show how only 2 moderators can deal with this effectively.

i have a suggestion for Admin's
if a member is not a month old then deleting(banning) that member should delete all the posts made by him.. since all the spamers are less then a week old, & a spammer does more then ten posts by a single account it would be a lot easier to delele the member then searching individual posts made by him & deleting them..

Anyway, what a relief from spam now!

If you didn't try already I would log the http requests at a low level to see if there is some some unique string they use for the user-agent or some other http header field. Bot authors are stupid and lazy IMO, they might have some crap in there you can just block from apache...
